Did IQ's drop sharply while I was away from the computer?
It's funny that even with the orb gathering words from the spoiler/set, we're not any closer to a resolution on whether or not 'Epic' is indeed a keyworded ability or just another set of 'Beacons', and some of these posts are incredibly off topic, I guess it's hand in hand with this time in the rumor season right?
until one or the other shows up on a card either provided by one of our reliable sources *cough R_E, MEGANE, cok_spoiler Cough*, or on MTG.com sometime next week, I'm on the fence with the arguement over whether or not 'Epic' is an actual mechanic, I guess only time will answer.

Well, with Epic only having a single entry in the Orb, I'm thinking that's part of a card name. They would never have a keyword for a single card. Well, I suppose I could see it if it were a huge five-color bomb-y spell, but even then it seems a waste. Epic may just be an un-keyworded mechanic such as gating. Or perhaps not a mechanic at all. What exactly made us think it was in the first place?
ETA: I mean, besides CV's initial report. Wisdom we had secondary confirmation on from Lotus Noir, Epic was new info, info which has yet to be backed up. In fact, the Orb only made it look less likely to be a keyword. Not that this discounts it being a mechanic with no keyword.
Wisdom, on the otherhand, has the perfect number for a cycle. Either a cycle of two cards per color, or one card with wisdom mentioned twice per color. Either way, I think we can be sure that Wisdom is a keyworded mechanic.

"Epic" is in the Orb 10 times, not 1. Sounds Beacon-esque to me.

And in the same post as me ribbing on the general IQ of the Rumor Mill lately, to boot. Let's all take a minute to savor that bit of poetic irony. Heh. :biggrin3:

Thank you, that was totally my intent. It was allllllll, on purpose. Yup. Completely. I'm really not dum [sic] at all.
So it would seem Epic is a keyword, a decidedly huge, bomby sounding one at that. My guess is that Epic is referenced twice on each card (once as the keyword and again in the reminder text) in the cycle and that the cycle itself is rare. As for what it could do? That I'm at a loss on, though it would seem to be something huge, that's kind of implied by the word 'Epic' itself. It could be a card-specific Threshold, where Epic is reached after you've met some kind of hefty requirements.
Spellname - XYZ
Sorcery - Epic
Spellname (does something fabulous).
Until the end of the game, you can't play Epic cards.
Perhaps not "you can't play" - perhaps "reveal your hand and discard all Epic cards," etc. But some sort of limitation on their being played once you've played one.
Yes, IkitLaGriffe, but what are you speculating that means exactly? That Wisdom modifies hand size? That Epic does? We've just concluded that Wisdom isn't going to be on multiple cards, so why would they use that as a keyword for one instance of hand size modification? I'm a bit confused as to what you mean.
Oh, and that totally could've been editted into your other post. Double posting is naughty. :tongue2:
I will make an educated guess here: there will be an "epic" draw 7.
And I'll make another one:
Epic (You may only have one copy of this card in your deck)

epic = uberlegend eh? yet another thing to add to my "speculation about 12CCC gold card" list. why else would they make something that big?
and they better not pull a stunt like that one 1/1 for 7-8 mana with an epic card... it would be a waste.

"Your maximum hand size is reduced by two."
"Your maximum hand size is reduced by one."
"Your maximum hand size is increased by one."
"your maximum hand size is increased by two."
though I suppose there are also instances of three and four so take your pick.

In my opinion the shinen/ wisdom mechaninc is probably not a drawback, as this makes the flavor of being "wise" as having lots of cards in hand not make sense. Potentially (this is somewhat of compilation) we have:
-affinity for cards in hand (kinda klunky)
-some sort of reverse nightmare effect example:
when CARDNAME comes into play, draw X cards, When CARDNAME leaves play, discard X cards (I think of this flavor wise as being that the creature is wise and provides you with wisdom, until it dies) this however could be potentially broken and lends itself largely to blue
-when CARDNAME to play, look at the top x cadrds of your library, put one of those cards (maybe a type restricion) into your hand (this makes sense, as the block seems to have an undertheme of looking throught the top cards of your library, SDT, enshrined memories, Peer etc)
hope these are food for thought, just talkin' to people, gettin ideas and throwin' 'em out, just like everyone else

-I don't wanna go on a RANT here but America's foreign policy makes about as much sense as Beowolf having sex with Robert Fulton at the first Battle of Antetum. I mean when a neo-conservative defenstrates it's like Raskalnakov filibuster dioxymonohydrostinate.
-What the hell does rant mean?
I think "wisdom" is simply "pumps <whatever effect> depending on the cards in your hand". Oppressive Will the first example. That is all. There are loads of +x/+0 and +0/+X and -X/-X things in the Orb to let me believe that this is probably across colors. White gets pants, red gets fire breathing, Black gets -/-, blue gets counter/card draw (Library of A), etc. No big deal.
Shinen is a keyword, and I still consider that a mystery. But I bet "Wisdom" is just simply the above.
The literal translation of the Japanese Romaji 'shinen' is the English word 'thought'.
Food for thought?
Anyways, here's my guess:
Shinen will be a keyword mechanic on creature (indicating that creature is 'wise'). Example follow:
Wily Master 2GG
Creature - Human Monk Elder
Shinen (When this creature comes into play, put X shinen counters on it, where X is the number of cards in your hand.)
Remove a shinen counter, Tap: Each creature you control gains +1/+1 until end of turn.
2/1
Battlefield Tactician 2WW
Creature - Human Samurai Elder
Shinen (same reminder text)
Remove a shinen counter: Tap target creature opponent controls.
2/2
Dreaming Sage 2UU
Creature - Human Wizard Elder
Shinen (same reminder text)
Remove a shinen counter, Tap: Draw a card, then discard a card from your hand.
1/3
etc....
Note that this could also work on any permanent (lands, enchantment, etc....)
on a side note.... is there anything in the comp rules about affecting a spell already on the stack (ie modifying it? putting counters on it? etc?)
i ask because i had this crazy idea about Shinen (as above) being on Sorceries and Instants....
Wisdom from Beyond the Veil 3U
Sorcery - Arcane
Draw X cards where X is the number of Shinen counters on this card while it is on the stack.
which would have to combo with something like this....
Deranged Spellfiddler 2RR
Creature - Akki Shaman Elder
Shinen (same reminder text)
Tap: Move any number of shinen counters from this card onto a spell currently on the stack.
2/2
I'm not sure how that would work, but it would make for some nifty combos... and yes i realize they could just print a card that said Draw X cards, where X is the number of cards in your hand, but if a spell on the stack could get counters while it were on the stack then you could build up on your creature and use that creature's "wisdom" to modify your spells before they resolve... VERY NIFTY methinks:)
