I think that they are trying to preview stuff we already know, just to piss us off.
Nope. We already have the majority of the set... they could've chosen these previews weeks ago and still hit cards we know now with impressive accuracy. They're not doing this "just to piss us off."
How many X packs could get you a Life from the Loam (please say one!) or a Watery Grave or Char?
Phil
There has never been a set or a time when buying packs to get a particular rare could be cheaper on average than just buying the single card you want. The only time this strategy has been viable for Constructed-worthy cards has been to buy sets like Fallen Empires and Homelands where the cards you wanted were invariably commons with multiple versions on the print sheet.
Okay, so it's BOP, so we already knew about it and it's ravnica art(a bit unfortunate I wanted some great new art for BOPs core set return).
However can people please stop dissing the previews by saying "Boring", "I want something new". The previews aren't intended for the spoiler community, for the people who don't follow the spoilers the return of BOP is pretty huge news(most people here were pretty psyched up about it when it was first spoiled).
Hmph...for Xth, I was hoping WotC would give us something unique to chase - the inclusion of BoP is good news, but I really wanted one of the other art selections, since that'd be new in black border.
As it is, growing a little disappointed with Xth - not so much because of what's in; more because I, once again, foolishly believed the hype when they said that there would be some real surprises for the special Xth anniversary.
I know it looks kinda bad, but I just love it, and Black Bordered??? So good.
I like that Birds are back, but I just don't like the art. This current art was already blackbordered in Ravnica, and it would have just been awesome if we could have got the chance of getting either a new art, or the original art for Birds black boardered.
I would have preferred either the original art or the 7th/8th art, since the original art's way too hard to get black bordered, and the 7th/8th art has never been printed black-bordered.
Yeah, except the foils. But yeah, I agree. I think the alpha artwork would have looked really sweet to see in black borders again. I love that artwork, even though it's kinda fugly... for the nostalgia. Damn.
Still, I'm happy BoP is in 10th, anyway. :)

Actually, that didn't look right. Unlimited cards are generally quite a bit darker, however. And the colours tend to be richer looking. Once you've seen enough, you'll always be able to spot the difference, no problem.
you know what, i traded of my 7th ed. birds and i am a proud owner of the rav birds....i hated the old and updated art for pre-revnica birds of paradise. it was awkward looking and bland. at least theres some style to these. not to disrespect past art, but honestly ive never been a huge fan of the style from the original/older magic card art, other than nostalgia im not interested in much of any of it.
i am happy to see Xth with the new art, and hey if youre looking for differences b/w rav and 10th, the gawdy X symbol loses points vs rav and so does reminder text, voila! ravnica birds is still cooler, but these are a fine replacement over ed's work...and WAY better than mark poole.
I like the picture I think everyone seems to hate the newest picture for anything.
I remember when the 7th Edition Birds were made everyone seemed to dislike it now you hate this one and wish the 7th-8th one came back.
By the way you want that picture in black border so bad try foil.
*sigh* poor Monopoman, missing the point again. It's nothing to do with the "newest" piece of art. For a hyped set like the Xth Core Set, I was merely stating that something different might appeal to players and collectors. In this case, artwork of a BoP that hasn't been black bordered before (7th/8th) - which I immediately preferred to the original art, and is still my preference now.
As for your sad little parting shot, I already have four foil Birds of Paradise: two 7th edition, one 8th edition, and one Ravnica.
So, I meant what I said when I was hoping for something different: 7th/8th art black bordered on a regular, non-foil card. Is that clear enough for you?
I wonder if everyone that is so critical of the art work could name five Vango paintings, five works of art by micheal angelo, and five compliations of Choppin. And don't look them up on the internet! Trust me, I'll know. If you can't do that, then well you really don't warrant the title of art critic.
On topic: Don't worry birds of paridise, I still love you. No matter what you look like.
Well, Radical Serbian: it would be nice if you could spell Van Gogh, Michelangelo, and Chopin properly first.
Then, your point, albeit valid, might hold a little more weight.

This is a fairly asinine point. People can have their preferences without needing official qualifications.
That said, you people need to quit whining. It's obvious WoTC can't do anything to satisfy you, so just prepare to be utterly disappointed with everything they do.

Ah, good point. To shay one might say, if he could spell that correctly. But As I have alway stated when someone brings up my inability to spell, I say I have dyslexia! And of course those misspellings that I made of names were rather unrealated to my dyslexia, I say.... Dyslexics Untie!
I have always played with white bordered birds. Is having black borders so big a deal? The new art is very good. Imagine if the "new" art was actually the original art and then being replaced by the "old" art? People would be flipping. Problem is, many mtg players are really conservative about their cards and preferences while magic is a game of constant change. Adapting to change is tech.

I think there is a separate issue that people are overlooking:
Q: Why is it that art gets replaced some times when cards are reprinted? What kinds of factors lead to new art on old cards?
–Matt J., Washington DC, USA A: From Jeremy Jarvis, Magic Art Director:
Hey Matt,
It can be a number of things that lead us to commission new or alternate art for a given card.
- Could be quality issues.
- Could be contract issues.
- Sometimes a card's illustration is too tied to a past narrative arc or a past setting, which worked at the time but now feels forced or irrelevant.
- Could be that particular card is a good venue for a new direction (broader spell concepts, for example).
The original Alpha art obviously falls under the first category...I don't think anyone can dispute that, unless the artist still has the original painting, and somehow it could still be in good enough condition to be used...
The contract issues could be what pushed for a new artist/art (hence the drastically different visage of the bird) - so that would explain why 8/9th edition art wasn't used.
Obviously, the art for Ravnica has to be urbanized - flavor/continuity reasons, duh. However, in my experience Wizos almost always uses the most recent art for reprints (i.e. they don't suddenly switch back to old art, otherwise why change it in the first place?)
BoP might have been put into Ravnica just so they could use different art - political agendas perhaps?
Lol, true, ravnica's art doesn't make any sense since the bird is flying arround ravnica-like builds. Birds of PARADISE, it should be flying with a beauty sunshine or something, ffs.
This art sorta kinda made a little sense in Ravnica, especially when accompanied by its flavor text: "Long ago, birds of paradise littered the skies. Thanks to the city's sprawl, most now exist as pets of society's elite."
This FT was apparently removed from 10th, and it's easy to see why... but now we're left with art that, as you see, seems a bit incongruous.
Whatever. Personally, I like the 7th/8th art for BoP best, followed next by this (on a purely aesthetic level). I think the original art (which, as most of you know, was actually co-opted from another card altogether) is too primitive and early-cartoon-like (think Krazy Kat, for those of you old enough to remember or who have an interest in the history of comics/cartoons). And, yes, that was the extant art for BoP when I started playing MtG back in '96.
I hate that art ;p I'd rather they cut it from the set than print it with that art. Its in a freakin city - how does that make sense outside of Ravnica plane?
BTW Ravnica birds is the only case I can think of where the artwork actually affected the price of the card. My local shop was selling Rav birds for NZ$25, and 8th ed. ones next to them for $30!

So stop crying folks.
Hey now! We don't know anything about that bird's orientation. You can't tell from a drawing. Now, Remirez Di Pietro, he's gay or possibly transgendered.
In any case, this is really the best art birds has ever had. As much as it annoys me that WOTC went back on their word, I'm happy to have the birds back. I hope it isn't at the cost of Llanowar Elves, though.

For those complaining that the bird is in a city, instead of in paradise, the card's name doesn't mean birds that are in paradise. There is a family of birds called Birds of Paradise, and they are still Birds of Paradise whether they are in an equatorial jungle, the arctic circle, or in Austin, Texas.
It's like Grizzly Bears or Timer Wolves. It is the name of a kind of animal.
