well i really liked the flavor text of the old ambassador laquatus, then if this is the ambassador, i just realized that definetely this guy isnt smiling at all!!
New art feels way more ambassador-y to me. Increased age speaks of experience, while the facial expression communicates cunning and treachery awesomely. The old art was more like Gigolo Laquatus. Now (in some world where Kamahl didn't leave him stuck to Krosan dirt like a butterfly specimen), he's moved beyond the reach of Llawan's squirming tentacles and into his own.

Bog Wraith's new art can be seen in the download on page 2. It's in the page showing examples of combat. Turn the page counter-clockwise and zoom in to kind of see it.
the mexicans confirmed that the Ambassador had no new art.
and in the books and on the cards he apears on he is discribbed as an young and handsome merfolk..this one is not that young anymore..and.. well.. beauty is in the eye of the beholder, his beholder is about to tweek..

Yet.
There are actually a few infinite mana combos in T2... they're just too hard to pull off to make them worthwhile. This'll still see play in limited, and probably if a decent mana combo comes around, will be used in T2 too.
Too bad they didn't reprint the stuff for Heartbeat
ambassador laquatus is actually the main win condition in my Date Rape (dragon) deck.
its much better that stroke of genius IMO because the only real way for it to back fire is if someone trickbinds it or something

If you remove a lot of the adornments on his body that are merfolk specific, he neither looks old or unattractive. He's muscular and has a sort of malevolent charm. He's not very wrinkly and he's got a sweet goatee. Compared to the matriarch he looks 20.
I'd have to agree that stroke is far less easier to disrupt than the laquatus kill because its far easier to protect hte stroke kill with counters then dealing with STP-bind-stifle-Counters in addition-needle etc to protect laquatus
and my earlier comment was in regards to standardd, not older formats
It's funny, the old art was the reason I didn't play with him. Seriously, as lame as that is. (a little vorthos poking through there? or was it melvin....)
This one is breathtaking, and I think everyone can agree with me.
I was disappointed with him being reprinted... It's sad, but now I'm excited. Amazing what new artwork can do for some people. Like me.
Anyways, that whole concept of the foils being a little more special makes me very happy. Because not only will the new ones have the full picture foil of old favorites like Evincar, but we get to have it unspoiled by reminder text for things like flying...
As for justifying it being Laquatus- CMON. Not only does he not look like a Commando (the other merfolk are accounted for and lack of any weapon.. like an ambassador), he looks both sly and slightly evil, which is keeping with his character. I think *most* people agree with the fact that the old art was only mildly appropiate for the set, and in any given poll, there would be a 90%+ vote for this art over the old. I hope they keep the original Commando art personally, as it was a favorite of mine among merfolk art... If it ain't broke...

lol
who cares its either a rootwater or laquatus, not like either card is gunna see play.
laquatus doesnt have any engine to run alongside to be abused
Actually, if Lorwynn ends up being a tribal set (which looks promising looking at the cards to support it in Xth... whther or not the new card type is tribal or planeswalker), then cards like the Commando might very well see play. Laquatus... not likely, unless Gaea's Blessing disappears. Considering you can throw it into a non-green deck and have it ruin any mill deck's day.
Besides to the naysayers - I don't think the old Ambassador pic would work for merfolk art these days - he looks like he's got legs in the old art.
That's because Ambassador Laquatus did have legs. In the storyline, iirc, he was one of a small number of merfolk that could at will magically grow legs, leave the water, walk on land, and return to the water. That was why he was the ambassador between the merfolk and the Cabal.
Maybe it's the PBR, but isn't the old Laquatus art completely awful? It looks like a some crappy photo fun printshop morph. Like I was making a picture of my uncle if he were my meruncle. New art is so necessary.
Yes, the Torment art looks pretty bad, for a merfolk. His outfit and his skin look completely wrong, for a merfolk. Looking back at it now, he looks like he could be one of the Ravnica block Vedalken. Compare it with Vedalken Entrancer or Azorius Guildmage.

His outfit looks fine to me, being an Ambassador and all, it would definitely make sense that he would dress similar to a land-dweller. The torment art looks like an ambassador; the new one does not, to me.

I have 28 different EDH decks
If they're holding Trickbind, then they're going to Trickbind the "leaves play" trigger on the dragon, not Laquatus.
And Gaea's Blessing kills the Laquatus win hard. That's why Stroke is better.
