Holy ****, so many curves in that are identical... can this be considered plagiarism?
No but, it can be considered an "artistically inspired" piece. Which it may just be. The artist probably looked for inspiration somewhere and flipped through some art books.

"Flipped through some art books," are you kidding? Any artist worth is salt knows that image.
I think it's fantastic, though. That solid material clearly flowing and moving in such a powerful way is wonderfully executed.
Click one and scroll down (attached below) for the box with the 9th ed Shivan Dragon art.
AFAIK the only reason people think the new art is Shivan Dragon is when they first saw it there was a boarder on the bottom that said Shivan Dragon... but that was a long time ago, and it could have been put in the 'un-used art folder' and is being brought back out for Hellkite.
While most of the non-Guay art for XED has been good so far, I haven't seen any Serra Angels, Hell's Caretakers or Mahamoti Djinns this time around. I wonder, what happened?
Though your claim only included 'most' of the art anyway, you just felt you *HAD* to leave all of Guay's work out of it?
Ha.
I'm not going to take a stand in this, as I have a rather... vacant sense of art, I'm just... I thought it was funny.
Yup. It's a fair bet we can confirm every card but #9.
Remove Soul also occurred to me, but I thought the current art still had more mileage.
What makes people think it's Recover? Oh wait... now I see it... that little bit of her foot that's still in the ground? Oh, I see... pulling her out of the grave...
But I have to say, the piece looks animate... she looks like she's on the Ethereal plane all of a sudden...

No. We know that Southern Paladin is not in. We don't know why he appears on the white 2-player starters.
As for the arts this week:
7. Is the last art used on Shatterstorm owned by wizards or was that one of the old pay for each time it was printed pieces (the art showed up for the first time in 5th ed)? If it was one of commission pieces, I'd say this is the new art. If it wasn't, this could be either Shatterstorm or Smash. Wait, doing some looking at one of the possibilites for 9, it seems like Wizards probably owns that image of Shatterstorm. I'm now hoping this art is for Smash, as I think the last art for Shatterstorm better represents the card than this new art would.
9. Hm... Righteousness or Recover both seem like good guesses. My first instict is Righteousness, but Recover seems more likely.
10. I dunno, but I can't wait to get one.
18. This could go on either Shivan Dragon or Shivan Hellkite, my first instict is with the Hellkite, but with all the problems they've had this time around, perhaps it really is the Dragon

Indeed! It also feels a little like Miyazaki's Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, with the contrasts between the green of nature and the yellow of the desert, the velocity of the forest and the stillness of the dunes.
I hope we'll see it in the "Wallpaper of the week" feature on magicthegathering.com!

I am sure he does but, I am sure he referenced it properly. You don't just eyeball something like that and draw it do you? Or maybe he did. We don't really know, I was guessing to something of that effect.
And it is true, it does look amazing. Very well done stuff.

#7, I'd wager, is Smash and not Shatterstorm, because there is only one artifact being visibly destroyed. This is true of the original Shatterstorm as well, but in recent years they've really tried to keep art more closely tied to mechanics.
The option is that Southern Paladin was a late cut from the set (presumably with northern) and no one noticed that they had marked his art to be put on the box until it was too late.
The problem with this theory is that the Arcana in question is from June 14, 2007, and features both Southern Paladin and the current art from Shivan Dragon. If either of those cards or arts were late cuts from the set, they'd have had several months in advance to make sure that the advertisements for the set were accurate.
The other option is that the box was a mockup shot and they accidently grabbed the wrong mockup and the actual box will feature different art.
The dragon art has the added possibility of being used for a foil (one art for foil the other for normal)
Now these theories I can believe, not because they sound particularly probable, but because as far as I know we lack a better explanation.

The purple color scheme and sinister facial expression are also typical of a black card, and Recover could use new art anyways, because the current one is setting-specific and doesn't necessarily look like a Raise Dead effect.

Karma doesn't exist. You can't depend on it. If you count on it for justice or catharsis, you will find that you have placed your emotions on very unstable ground; and you will either repeat your disappointment in society over and over, or you will engage in a persistent delusion to protect yourself from that feeling.
I can say that 10 is Royal Assassin. The art is reminiscent of the weapons used from the assassin so I am more leaning towards that then the Agent. Solely basing it on the weapons but, yeah its Royal Assassin to me.
royal assassin has always been depicted drawing a hidden weapon out of his cloak, a royal assassin with weapons drawn is not very sneaky
I was thinking they were going to go with the more "Royal" aspect of Royal Assassin. (The card looks like crap needs better art. So does Guard, I am just saying same goes with Assassin.)
Maybe the whole roguish theme to the art makes me think its Royal Assassin and not Steadfast Guard. I was just thinking about my assassin/guard lore when I was looking at #10 the first time.
I have revised a few points:
- I have never seen a guard weild two swords at once when guarding anything. They are usually clad either with a two-handed sword, barehanded, sword-shield, pike/polearm combinations.
- Sometiems assassins can use katars, two one-handed swords, one or two daggers when killing people. (D&D, Rogue's advanced class is Assassin.)
- Guards usually have helms of some type
- Notice the "evil" gotee and earring?
- There are alot of shadows used in this card among a misty backround with an old tower there. While the man in question wears black and silver armor, with black gloves and a menacing expression on his face....
Yeah its Royal Assassin to me. And I really couldn't compare this to Sleeper Agent either. The Sleeper is not active enough to warrent #10.
[card=Dismal Failure]"Two magi could trade spells all day and never crown a victor.
The real battle is not one of power but of will.

I'd have to go with Steadfast Guard for 10. Yeah, it may not follow that a Royal Assassin needs to look like an assassin. And surely, we really have no idea what a Sleeper Agent should properly look like (that is part of the point, eh?). However, the guy in 10 really doesn't seem like he's assassinating someone, nor does he seem to be behind enemy lines under cover. He DOES, however, seem to be the soldierly type--and I've always thought that Steadfast Guard feels closer to soldier than to rebel and just had the misfortune of being printed during Mercadian Masques. LOL
Is everyone blind? 5 is Merfolk Looter. Something holding a strange bauble is the style for EVERY 'looter' card. 5 is Looter, not matriach or commando.

We already have the picture for Looter. It's not looter. Looter has its same art from seventh with new flavor text.

Have we seen the card? cause I'll stand by Looter unless the card is seen, not just a rumor, it's too like the other art for 'looter' cards.
But if I am wrong, which is a real possibility, I'd say Matriarch.

even if we havent, m isnt part if q-s so yeah couldnt be anyway
now that we've seen the tips cards, showing Royal Assassin's 9th art,we can narrow 10's options to the Guard or the Agent... still leaning on the Guard myself...
