ohhhh poo on you.. that art is way shmexy and you know it. Xth edition will bring an orgiastic future to those that are beginners and even those that have been playing since Alpha.
i hope im wrong, but i've seen far too many EXPERIENCED magic players not know the basics when it comes to phases, combat and basic creature abilities.
the can of worms is on the table and its about to be opened! *covers his face*

Well phases and Combat is just lazy game play. with a little study they should learn that (though I do sometimes draw before untapping, really ticks this one guy I play off) not know basic abilities is a head scratcher.
But I have some faith in magic players, they should get the new concepts, plus as they are all Rare they shouldnt come up to often for new players, as they usualy play what the crack froom the couple booster packs they open.
If anyone knows why G0-DRAW was banned I would love it if they would PM me. That guy was pure entertainment 100% of the time. Plus he never publicly responded to his Contraptions "Proof" that never panned out.
I humbly write this post to say that while this art is not better than the original invasion art for Reya I really don't think anyone could make a better art for Reya since the standard was so good and high to begin with. With that being said I still LOVE this art and applaud you on the job that you have done with it. Nice work!
To everyone else: I understand the point about the Legendary thing but personally everyone I've taught gets it within a few minutes of playing so I don't see this being a huge issue - at least until Akroma v Akroma or Kamahl v Kamahl or anything like that pops up. And even then they aren't very similar to each other. The basic ruling is exactly one sentence - if they share the EXACT same card name they both go to the grave, no?
I remain totally unexcited, both by the card itself and the new art. I was around when it was originally printed and it was just another random angel rare for the binder and, frankly, I doubt much will change this time.

I like the new art, but it doesn't necessary look like "Reya" as we know her. I am DEFINITELY getting this promo though. I just hope it doesn't have the ugly textured foiling style that some of the release promos tend to have.
Does make me wonder, however, if they would use the old art for the promo for nostalgia's sake...
Honestly I think this art looks way better. I'm a huge fan of Matt Wilson (glad to see his art in Magic again; he's been gone for a while) and I always felt the original Reya was one of his weakest card images.

you can generally tell the easiest road to victory by how many players congregate on it; and the road of counterspells/control has been the freeway of choice in magic for quite some time.

What I find offensive is not that Wizards is endeavoring to make the game more accessible, but the attitudes of elitists who act as though no one of any age should show their face in the Magic public without first having mastery over the complexities of the game.
Honestly, I like the original Reya art better. The original had a little more color to it and more emphasis on the awesomeness of the angel itself, whereas the new art features an angel with a more subdued pose and much paler colors as well as including the soldiers she is resurrecting as opposed to focusing solely on her. The new painting simply seems more watered down than the original, although the difference is slight.
As for the card itself... Well, it's a limited bomb in a color that typically doesn't have many limited bombs. Which doesn't count for very much, considering nobody cares about drafting core sets. And as for constructed, very few creatures that cost 8 or 9 mana are ever played in any decks that actually intend on paying for them. When these cards do see play, it is for their capacity to singlehandedly win the game -- to bring down swift and irrevocable justice and end a long drawn out fight in two swings. Reya lacks this ability. For Reya to equal the other ultra-expensive cards she still needs other creatures in your graveyard, making her a terrible choice for a deck that intends on hardcasting her.

I agree that many of the rules and abilities in magic are easy to learn, but like anything we learn in life, if we're forced to learn it all at once, our faces melt and we cry a lot.
I can't unlearn magic and try to relearn it in todays environment. No doubt its much easier and streamlined compared to the old days. But you can't deny that this game is complex.
Yeah, flyers can only block flyers. that's easy, but add on top of that the 5 or 6 other things a player should be thinking about and the game starts to overwhelm very quickly. I've tried teaching it before and you have to start very slow. I guess its our job to do that, not wizards. yeah?
Either way you look at it, you can't take the mentality of "oh, if they dont know it tough nuts, go get a rules insert!" because a lot of the time you wont have that rules insert. quick, without help whats Modular do? and Sunburst? now Graft? how are they different in a way someone new could understand. see? its messy. its advanced. and it takes time.
Yes, those abilities will never be in a core set because they ARE advanced, but to someone brand new to the game, EVERYTHING is considered advanced to them. 5 different lands and turning things sideways is new to them. "mana" is strange and frightening. lol.
Im excited to see what this tenth edition will do to standard, but at the same time i can see how this game could curl up, wither and turn into a D&D/warhammer/etc nerdy fridge hobby where the learning curve and player mentality and experience level isn't friendly at all.
does anybody see where im coming from? i mean... we all started out as newbies at one point. don't you feel for the new guy? You know, the guys that will actually try to PLAY Reya? haha! j/k j/k, shes "flavorful" and "a bomb" or something.
Albi: Your entire argument is based on a single flawed perception -- that the rules text for flying will be gone from all cards in Xth. There is absolutely nothing saying that this is the case.
You see, I understand that to a brand new player flying would need explaining. However, this player only needs to see one explaination to understand what flying is. This explaination need not be on a rare -- in fact, the likelyhood of a rare being the card to enlighten this novice as to the nature of flying is next to nothing even if it did have the rules text. It is going to be a common. Not Reya, but Storm Crow.
The reasoning for them removing the rules text from rares is very simple. First of all, it isn't necessary for reasons I explained above. Second of all, it makes the card look ugly to the rest of us. I consider myself well versed as to the intricacies of the flying ability. I do not need reminded of it every time I look at my Reya Dawnbringer or Shivan Dragon, nor do I desire to be reminded. Elegance is important to a card's image, and the lack of unnecessary text is elegant.
Simply put, I would put money down that any ability that appears as often as flying does will still have reminder text, just only on commons and uncommons, and that abilities like trample and protection which, while present in core sets, are very infrequent, will still have reminder text on all cards, even rares.

Wow. That art is amazing (although less colourful then the original). I hope they make it a wallpaper around the time 1...I mean Xth comes out. *starts saving for a box of Xth*
Let's be honest... few players stay for long in the "basic" sets as it is... even the youngest want to get into the "cool" stuff like the big kids. This was one of my hugest gripes about Time Spiral is it really frustrated new players...
"this card is cool... but it's not supposed to ever happen and likely never will again."
If basic was supported more heavily, we'd see more core set events like limited and sealed outside of release... Portal worked enough for 3 sets... but even then it started introducing more mature concepts.
quick, without help whats Modular do? and Sunburst? now Graft? how are they different in a way someone new could understand.
To be fair, I could very easily do that. Then again, I've gotten like ten people into the game at various points in my life, and my father was the one that got me into it, so...
That, and I don't think I've ever gotten someone in with a core set, it's usually been expansions. Go figure. *shrug*

This version is just over flowing with flavory goodness and is apt for her ability.
Don't really care about the "non playability" of Reya as always brought up.
