Win back older players, eh? What about those of us who've been around since Revised?
If they really wanted me back, they'd reprint the cards to make both Sligh and Stompy viable again (although I HAVE been tinkering R/G and come up with a nice little deck that operates on only 13 total lands lately....but it's no stompy...heck..it doesn't even feel like extended without Wastelands...*pout*)
Ah well..I digress...I'd like to see what they have to throw at us. Guess we wait until the fall...
Cheers,
Austin
I don't think they said it would be something to win back old players, I think they said it would be something that'd be good value for old and new players alike. And that Piledriver alone (you know, the main workhorse of Goblins everywhere from '02-'03 standard through to T1) is good value. The elf deck depends on the rare as to how good it'll be.
Meanwhile, the game changes and you gotta build new decks if you wanna play newer formats. If you're having trouble with extended, try Block or T2 where the meta shifts almost weekly at the moment, and try to keep up with that and see how annoying it gets.
As for wastelands, right now in extended, against certain decks, running Ghost Quarter is the same deal... against decks like Zoo, they don't really run any basics, so a Quarter will nuke their land then give them nothing (nothing I tell you, nothing! bwahahaha *cough*) in return.
:rollout: :rollout::crazy: To get bloodstains out of clothes apply hair shampoo and soak the garments in cold water for five minutes before sticking them in the wash. This lifts out the stains quite nicely.:evillol::smileup:
Ah CX...I still play T2...I'm just lamenting the loss of the good old days. Heck..I remember insinuating once upon a time that Urza's Block was crap...and then later lamenting how much I missed Urza's Block. I now routinely do the same thing with Invasion Block. (heck..there are only a handful of expansions that I truly don't miss...Fallen Empires [with the exception of the almighty Hymn...], Masque Block [except Rishadan Port...and Blue Skies..], and Odyssey Block [just felt like a letdown after the intrigue/excitement of Invasion Block...hope we can avoid that with Lorwyn..]) It's just something that happens...I can still remember playing with Timetwister and Timewalk...and it still tickles me (even after what now...eight incarnations each?) when they print a new/improved/fixed version of them every other block or so.
Okay...enough of a trip down memory lane... :)...I'm getting a little misty-eyed here.
No Deranged Hermit, it was recently a judge promo. No Ambush Commander, it just plain sucks and would be busted in precon vs precon games. They DO make these things to play well against each other. Either the elf deck is getting a foil Caller of the Claw, or something's seriously wrong.
Wait wait wait... They're giving you an AU$15 (that's about US$12 atm I think) rare, as an ALTERNATE ART, FOIL promo card, for US$20 along with a whole deck including 3 more (likely) decent rares?
And you're STILL finding a reason to complain?
It won't be $12 after a few million more enter circulation. The foil will be Piledriver, nothing else makes sense with SGC in 10th.

Hey all... I'm retired, not dead. Check out what I'm doing these days (and beg me to come back if you want):
No.
You're very mistaken. The artworks were from the same artist, but what kind of FREAKING MORON could mistake a goblin token with SGC's buddy's hat on for a Piledriver? They're completely different, and there's no way a piledriver would be shown as that puny and nonthreatening.
If the promos are Elvish Champion (which has already been done as a foil bonus for 8th edition's starter decks) and Goblin King, those decks WILL NOT SELL A SINGLE COPY. This themedeck is meant to be a big deal, this is why they'll do Piledriver. The rares for goblins are probably Piledriver, SGC, Goblin Sharpshooter and Goblin King, or something like that, if they want the decks to sell... otherwise it'd be stuff like Goblin Goon, Mogg Sentry and other mildly shoddy cards like that.
I seriously can't think of a elf promo card that could come anywhere near the hype for Piledriver for the elves, the only decent played elf I can think of would be Caller of the Claw. More likely they'll appeal to the casual audience with Elvish Piper, Gaea's Herald or Elvish Archers.

Yeah, I can't remember a single set that I didn't enjoy playing at the time (although looking back at Kami limited, it sucks nowdays and I started getting bored with TS Limited too after a while... far too random). I'm pretty oldschool compared to lots of the local players, but I was a newbie without a budget when I started during Urza block, didn't start tournament play until Mirrodin when I got a job and got kicked out of my D&D group for objecting to being fed to a bear (long, long story :P) but now I have plenty of the old cards. I have one Power (Timetwister... it aint much but it lets me get my Grim Long deck down to 10 proxies for the local T1 scene) and fully operational legacy and T1(10P) decks. Scary thing is, I'm probably one of only maybe 5 players in my city who bother to construct competative T1 decks for the local tournaments, and I'm on a shoestring budget half the time (mainly cos I have a dealer who extends credit, so half the time I'm like $200 in debt to him to get these cards :P)
Of course, the main reason I like the idea of a promo Piledriver is cos I have a collection of FNM, Prerelease, Release and Player Rewards promos dating back to '04, and I love my promos Makes up for my lack of power. That, and I play legacy Goblins, have a T1 goblin deck as a backup for grim long, and play goblins in extended some of the time too (I even played Dirty Kitty when it showed up on the scene for that marvelous... week)

Rat's nest deck numer 2!
That is 30 dollar of rares in one deck, assuming the elf deck is at least as good, that means 60 dollar of rares in a 20 dollar deckbox.
OMG...if you're Dinosaurs, what am I? I've been in the game since (officially) Weatherlight but my first deck was primarily IceAge-Visions. Would that make me primordial sludge?
Since I have been around since alpha/beta that makes me -GOD-

Well now, didn't the thing say it was $20 PER DECK, not 20 for the pair? Didn't it say $20 "per duel deck"? That's $40 for $60 worth of rares... if they could ever find rares for elves that weren't dirt cheap.
And they DID say that it was going to be good value for all players
2 exclusive 60- card theme decks in one box for MSRP $19.99
Each deck contains 4 rares (as opposed to the 2 in a standard theme deck.
1 rare per deck is an alternate art premium card, visible through the cut-out in the box.
The decks are full of powerful and popular cards from the past 6 years of Magic™.
There are 3 exclusive token cards in the Duel Deck.
Both decks are legal in the Extended tournament format.
The decks are Elf and Goblin themed; both very popular among casual gamers and both tide to the most current set (Lorwyn™).
(Giant blue underlining mine so as to help point out the important part)
So, no, it isn't $20 per deck, but $20 for both togeather. I can see why you would mistake that though, as it did say Duel-Deck and not Duel-Decks. But, yes, the good news is that it is $20 for two decks. The bad news is that it probably won't include the kick-butt rares; unless Wizards wants to realy sell these.

My Have/Want list (MTGO)
Really, if they want to murder the secondary market prices for goblins, they could seiously load up that deck with some mean stuff...
A guy can dream... (Oh, and keep in mind, some of these rares MIGHT include ones from Lorwyn)

I just hope it isn't some garbage wellwisher + seeker of skybreak theme deck.
As long as we get 4x Wirewood Hivemaster and 4x Wirewood Herald, I don't think we can do wrong here.
