It's Official - A WotC GenCon press release confirmed that Planeswalker cards will appear in Lorwyn, and that GenCon also will feature a wall of never-seen-before Lorwyn art.
Magic: The Gathering® announces the first truly new card type ever introduced in the game. “Planeswalker” cards will first appear in the upcoming Lorwyn™ set, scheduled to release in October 2007. According to MagicTM storylines, players take on the role of planeswalkers – powerful wizards – and battle for glory, knowledge and conquest. This marks the first time in Magic's 15-year history that planeswalkers will be represented on MagicTM cards.
In addition to the announcement of planeswalkers, GenCon also will feature a wall of never-seen-before Lorwyn art. An all-new plane, Lorwyn exists far from the strife depicted in Time Spiral™ block's Dominaria. Lorwyn is an idyllic world where races of fable thrive in perpetual midsummer.
There it is. Again guys, I apologize for not being there this year. You know I would have had you all pics of the floor tonight had I been there.
I will say that this press release is pretty silly though. Aren't we already playing as powerful wizards – and battling for glory, knowledge and conquest?
Seriously? This basically says Planeswalkers are in. NOTHING has ever been said that Tribal AND Planeswalkers won't be seeing print in the same set together.
It sounds like when you cast a planeswalker you become that planeswalker. Sounds like a form of the dragon style of card.
I am very very worried from a flavor aspect how planeswalker would work. I almost through a hissy fit when i saw Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir on a card, (but it was ok when i found out he lost his spark and all that)
I hope wizards does this right from a flavor view point. Like they explain why you where not that planeswalker with said abilities all along or what not.

Correct; however, it does say that "Planeswalker" is that new card type and not Tribal.
"Magic: The Gathering® announces the first truly new card type ever introduced in the game. “Planeswalker"
By the logic your present that is like saying, "NOTHING has ever been said that Instances AND Planeswalkers won't be seeing print in the same set together. Or enchantements, sorcery, ect. You get the point I hope.
The point of the argument between Tribal and Planeswalker as far as I see it is that WoTC announced a new card type to be introduced for the first time since the beginning of MTG. And they just announced that to be Plansewalker and not Tribal.
According to MagicTM storylines, players take on the role of planeswalkers – powerful wizards – and battle for glory, knowledge and conquest. This marks the first time in Magic's 15-year history that planeswalkers will be represented on MagicTM cards.
it's saying we are already turn into planeswalkers every time we play. we don't seem to be turning into planeswalkers; the cards will just be extra planeswalkers, in addition to the actual players.

Nice to see planeswalker confirmation.
So, who's going to be taking pictures at Gen Con for us?
The perpetual midsummer part is interesting, perhaps lending more credence to the idea that Jelly is a night/wintry block?

i get the point that Tribal as a "card type" is the big debate, but I think it's hard to ignore that this block looks to be very much tribal in the sense of "theme."
Well, Tribal wasn't exactly an 100% new card type, as it's been printed in Future Sight, but we have seen no Planeswalkers yet. I'm certain we'll see both in Lorwyn. It just wouldn't make sense if Tribal wasn't a card type in a new tribal block...
Welcome to Lorwyn, also known as "Anti-Ice Age". Hmmm...maybe they'll print "snow-hate" cards. /sarcasm
Cheers,
Austin
Honestly, I think if Lorwyn is the "Anti-Ice Age" then perhaps it'll have a couple playable "snow-like" cards, considering how many "snow-hate" cards were printed in the original Ice Age.

Aristotle nailed it.

This has always been the case, nothing new in this sentence. Your all planeswalkers and didnt even know it.
The only question remains is wether or not Wizards will mess up planeswalkers or do them in good design. I mean they must have been trying for so long that they have perfected it right?

RnD during Time Spiral:
Rosewater: "Color Pie, WTF is that, If I want Black to be able to wrath, counter and have green creatures then I will damnit!"
Random RnD guy: "RED AKORMA! FTW!"
Gleemax: "Rosewater has broken out of my mind control!"
RnD after 2008:
MaRo: Hmm how do we fix the problems of pricing with cards like Tarmogoyf and Thoughtsieze
Random RnD Guy: OO lets make a new RED RARITY SYMBOL!
MARO: OMGWTFBBQ! Thats a great idea, we'll call it Mythic Rarity!
Gleemax: NOT AGAIN! CELEB
Assuming the 'planeswalkers as players' theory is correct then yes, Imperial Mask will have a purpose in one on one games.
Speaking of planeswalker theories, these are the more sensible ones I've seen:
- Planeswalkers as Players
The planeswalkers you spend mana to summon act as additional players you control. They have a hand, permanents, probably draw from your library, maybe even have life totals... Etc. etc.
- Planeswalkers as Vanguards
The planeswalkers you spend mana to summon act as a Vanguard card which changes huge fundamental game rules for you and functions as an unremovable enchantment.
- Planeswalkers as Super-creatures
The planeswalkers you spend mana to summon act as creatures with many powerful abilities in addition to a power and toughness.
These are the three most common theories I've seen tossed around the Rumor Mill. All of them have problems and the only answer which truly feels like a new card type is the first, but I'd say they're all somewhat possible.
Are there any theories you'd like to add? Keep 'em broad -- we obviously can't guess at the intricacies of how it works, but we can guess at the general function.

Hmmm, I wonder how this will happen in gameplay terms.
The quoted text is referring to the fact that since Magic was created, each player has represented an extremely powerful mage. A planeswalker. It's saying that to point out how the game is changing in LOR - now the player can CONTROL planeswalkers as cards.
I think they'll act like Vangaurds, but they'll have a small life total and can only really be destroyed like a player would... by bringing the life total to 0.
Then it's official: Tarmogoyf is the best green creature ever.
I'd say this had already been established, sans planeswalkers.
I mean, seriously, it already outperforms Wild Mongrel which was the previous holder of that title. It just isn't fair, you know...

I don't think it's very likely that Planeswalkers will act as additional players, that would end up being very clunky, and the ability to take two turns is buh-roken.
I think they'll end up being a "replacement" player, which I mentioned in one of the other threads:
Quote from "Blargg" »
I'm not sure if this has been mentioned before, but what if the mechanic of Planeswalker is that, instead of adding a new player to your side, the Planeswalker takes your place?
For instance, you pay to put the Planeswalker into play by the mana cost and X amount of life. The Planeswalker takes your place. and starts with the X life. There it stays, like a Mindslaver'd player, until it is removed from play, or the Planeswalker zone, or whatever.
Planeswalkers are attacked and targetted as though they were the player. Their permanents are your permanents, their library is your library, etc...
In the end, I think it solves all the problems with treating Planeswalkers as players. The flavor is that you basically ask the Planeswalker for assistance for a short time. You can keep it to only one Planeswalker per side, and by having to "transfer" life points, it can keep you from throwing Planeswalkers up as continuous meat shields.
But, hey, at least we know for sure that Planeswalkers are in.
A big 'no duh' from this press release, and I think that WoTC is turning up the heat on the hype machine with nothing else new to show for it. (I expected maybe one planeswalker spoiled...)
Confirmation is always a plus, of course.

Well, now all discussions about new card type should end. -1 reason for Lorwyn to be Tribal ^^
//Alas, no Pandafarmer to take the photos of that art wall =(
Just joking.
