A big 'no duh' from this press release, and I think that WoTC is turning up the heat on the hype machine with nothing else new to show for it. (I expected maybe one planeswalker spoiled...)
Confirmation is always a plus, of course.
I agree... I honestly don't think we'll see too much more info other than this. In the 3-4 years I've attended a GenCon, they've never revealed an actual card. Possibly the article will have more info than GenCon, but at least they get a sweet art wall!
Okay, since this is out today, now I'm positive tomorrow's big Feature Article will have something to do with Planeswalkers. I'm guessing they'll spoil a planeswalker card (they've done early spoilers before, like Temple Garden), to get us up to date on just how they work. I'm guessing they'd want everyone at the pre-release to be familiar with how the new card type works, or else there will be literally tons of questions all over. Spoiling them ahead of time definitely helps with that.
Well, seems like this is a setup for MaRo's article tomorrow (tonight out here on the West Side..:) ). Maybe we'll get a spoiler then...or at least an explanation of how the mechanic is going to work...give people a chance to start milling it around in their heads as to how best use the new resource. I mean..this is a big deal, and it could be an even bigger deal from a game-play standpoint, depending on how simple/complex the card mechanics end up being.
Hello....Um did everyone just up and forget Future Sight. This article proves only 2 things. That we are still plainswalkers flavor rise and haven’t changed to a higher form.(Something more powerful then Planeswalker.) And that their will be planeswalker's as a card type. I am still betting the farm and half my collection that they will be venser like plainswalkers, the non immortal, nigh un killable ones but more like just really powerful hard to get out creature/enchantment hybrids. And as its a tribal block maybe each one will help their sorta tribe.

I'm glad that this has been "confirmed," though Tribal still can be considered for this set.
Flavorwise, maybe like a "Junior Planeswalker" where they help you out in someway depending on what their specialty, like a mini-Vangard. Can't wait to see the new rules (Assuming it's tomorrow with that big announcement MaRo has planned).

We already have plainswalkers Graceful Antelope, Righteous Avengers ;). Anywho, I belive planeswalkers will be enchantments with hands, decks, life totals, etc.
Maybe PWs will be like other players you can summon into the game. However, they dont have their own deck, hand, graveyard, and all that stuff. And they only have a fraction of the health as you, maybe 5. And their abilities are essentially cards imprinted on them with mana cost. This is harder to explain than I thought, erm...
Okay so they dont have their own mana pool and they have to use your mana to play spells, which are built into the text box what they can play. Like if you pay one red mana they cast what is essentially shock and do 2 damage. Or you could use their other built in spell and play Lava Axe.
I am probably the only person in the world that collects Tarnished Citadels. Not because I like the card, but because I don't want someone to get his hands on one and then attemp to actually play the damned thing.
So now its confirmed,The excitement turns toward WHAT are they?
its very plausible that they will be affected by multiplayer cards, that opens up a lot of new interactions, I'd say a planeswalker may have its own mana pool? or maybe you could either play land for your self or choose to play it for your allied planeswalker, and those cards that say "target opponent" can also target planeswalkers.

They're probably going to slow-roll us. They might even spend the next few weeks spoiling one planeswalker card, bit by bit.
Well...now that the cat is out of the bag, the main question remains...how rare are these going to be from a flavor and function standpoint? It would seem that they would require an uber-rare status...
My hunch is that Planeswalkers will introduce a rarity way above and beyond a normal rare; maybe taking the concept of chase cards to the extreme?
1 per case(1:6 boxes) possibly?
if so...
Sheesh...it sucks being a collector if this is true...
ps...If there is a differential of 5 cards from the 301 to 306, then there may be 5 Planeswalkers- 1 for each color? Only the MaRo knows...
It would seem to me that if you introduce a new card type, you want it to be accessible and have an instant impact on the game. (to make players forget any shortcomings the first wave of them may have...;) ) You also want the game to remain accessible to little Timmy down the street who can afford 2 boosters a week on his allowance. And little Timmy isn't going to keep buying pack after pack, box after box, to get his playset of PW's. If it were up to me (and it isn't...thank god for the game), I'd put in three cycles of PW for this initial set. A rare cycle with great abilities, an uncommon cycle with moderate abilities, and a common cycle for little Timmy to play with and say how cool it is.
All that remains is WHAT they will be...I hope today's feature article will shed some light though.

Cute.
I think Planeswalker cards will be something like the Vangaurd avatars.
I think they'll act like Vangaurds, but they'll have a small life total and can only really be destroyed like a player would... by bringing the life total to 0.
I'm still asserting that Planeswalkers can play spells from your hand (with some limitations like # of times per turn, they use your resources, etc.), have special abilities based on those spells they play (VERY STRONGLY hinted in Jace's profile) and will otherwise behave like creatures, meaning P/T, combat participation, and so on. In other words, I think the type line will say "Planeswalker Creature - Whatever".
Example:
Darac Awrred
2UUU
Planeswalker Creature - Human Wizard
2/2
If a spell CARDNAME plays would draw cards, it draws that many cards plus 1. He brings obsession to the research compulsion.
I also think "The Five" will be a rare cycle in Lorwyn. If they're going to be supposedly complex rules wise, that'll be almost necessary.
One thing that we have to consider regarding their functionality is their tight color alignment. If you read the description of Jace Beleren, the first spoiled Planeswalker, it states:
"Just as blue mana is poised between white and black, Jace has a complex and troubled conscience. The nature of his abilities means he must make difficult decisions about what's right and how his actions define him."
He is definitely aligned blue, but has personality aspects of the two allied colors. Now honestly, I don't know what this means exactly, burt I do know it's important. But I strongly suspect his casting cost will be blue, not multi-colored.
Regarding the color pie, it can mean one of two things. In one case, it is mono blue in its influence on the game. So it may act as a powerful blue mage with its own blue spells and possibly mana pool (along the allied player theme that myself and others have been exploring in earlier threads). Or perhaps it may be used to assist with or amplify blue spells (a la Vanguard). Or it may be a super-powerful blue creature. These are the three leading theories on the functionality of planeswalkers (thank you Khift for the summary) In the other case, it's influence on the game will the multicolored. In this case blue/white/black (or even white/black with a blue casting cost). This would be more complicated, and I suspect that while this would be possible in the future, WOTC wouldn't throw something that difficult at us in the first set with planeswalkers, but it is possible.
My hunch is that Jace is a mono-blue influence on the game, just as Ms. Vess will be the mono-black influence. Each planeswalker will add some color-pie related influence for each color. I like the idea of a card that acts as a separate player, with it's own life-total, a set amount of mana available for optional use each turn, and perhaps the ability to draw cards from your library. I do not believe that the planeswalker could supply its "own" cards, as that would destroy the very well-worn 60/15 deck structure. Messing with that would turn tournament Magic upside-down.
Note that no Liliana-esque figure is visible in the planeswalker's outlines. Given that the structure of these minisites is 4 weekly installments, we will learn about the Blue (Jace), White, Red and Green planeswalkers from the minisite, and our good friend from the poster will be the fifth.
That's my stab at it Khift. Hope it's worth two cents.
YES I AND WHO EVER HAD THE SAME IDEA ARE RIGHT!!!!!!!! Yes it has been Realesed with the new planeswalker minisite, thats right fokes, the plainswalker cards the new new powered down version of the planeswalker race, Future Sight Varient. That means that our little sparky friends are now mortal without access to unlimitless mana nor can change shape basicly they are still flesh and blood. So any idea's of summoning a second player are basily squashed WoooHooo. Todays a good day.

This is exactly what I was talking about in the Game Buyer thread before the announcement.
I wasn't looking for a complete list of Planeswalker cards (or even one full card to be honest), but this really seems kind of empty. I would at least liked to have had some sort of functionality hint.

re: what they are/what they do...I'm leaning towards the mtgo avatar idea, however, one thing that stood out to me, each plansewalker knows different spells...what if the planeswalkder comes into play and you can seed it with a couple of specific cards from outside the game, like a Q's tent or a Magi-Nation mage? Like Jace let's you grab a counterspell and a card drawer on top of having some effect like an enchantment...
