I still haven't gotten over the 'rough sketch'... and how brave you'd have to be to post it Your effort is greatly appreciated tho. It seems to me that WoTC is trying to explore the dark side of Tolkien-esque elves, character wise, and using the horns merely to distinguish them flavorwise, much as their style guides do for goblins everytime we see them again. But tis just random speculation... I'll never get over that sketch

best. sketch. ever. i applaud the effort as well. although, i have the feeling, you didn't have to be brave. you just wanted to provide a pic, unposted at the time, so you tried to appease us. and you did...overwhelmingly! i was in tears reading this thread.
Lorwyn has seemed Tolkien-esque for awhile now, which i don't mind. MtG is "revisiting" a "traditional" fantasy setting (a long time coming), so for Flavor Lovers like me = let the rejoicing begin. Tolkien-esque = not a bad thing. after all, Tolkien made the genre mainsteam and is the pioneer, so what fantasy genre isn't going to resemble it in one way or another? the best any company can do is create new races, hoping to feel/seem as original as possible.
Maybe long ago elves mated with the satyr race?
EDIT:MAAAAYbe that waaaaas bAAAAD?
Are you suggesting the Lorwyn elves were into beastiality?
Seriously though, I would love to see satyrs, leprachauns, pixies, etc. MtG definately needs to expand upon the mythical, magical, and/or fabled creatures we know about. We had Centaurs, finally, so maybe these "others" aren't far-fetched.

(about the English language) It's kinda like a raft that was cobbled together from parts of three different boats and since then has been kept barely afloat with crude repairs every time a leak appeared.
I have done what i can in photoshop to correct the images, lens flare is a ***** to deal with. Note the size of her, she's is UBER skinny, with clothes on shes thinner then Calista Flockhart. Facial features are flawless, maybe more so, very aristocratic. Something tells me she is either from one of the higher castes or is a guardian/priestess of some sort.
I don't think so. The elf on the cover wields a bow, while elf from brochure wields a sword. Of course, that's not enough to say that for sure, but that's enough for me to count them as different elves.
Actually, to me, it looks like the hanging wall posters they put during the major DCI sponsored events (Pre-releases, States, Regionals). I don't know if that's what other places have, but here in Seattle we have the older ones that the judges/coordinators like to put up. They're pretty cool and if not always show card art. So, this could be actual art for a card and not use filler art. I guess that's the main bullet point I was trying to make.

Seeing Satyrs in MTG would be the highlight of all the years I have played.
I fiddled with the files a little bit with some of my Photoshop Smack-fu Chi (or lack thereof) and composited the image with a bit less lens flare (agreed that it's um, rough to adjust for that hehe). It's actually a really nice work of art and she really is, ah, überskinny around the waist. I think they had a blurb on wizards.com about the most beautiful elves are called "perfects" or something like that...maybe this is one of them
Interesting shot, it piques my curiosity about the set.
so my question is, why would someone with a sword be in a preacher like stance?
anyways...
yeah, these elves are too thin, perhaps the research at WOTC reported that ppl think really skinny bodies *cough paris/nicole * are... hot/attractive/beautiful?
but really, i mean where's her waist? u can even notice where her hip bone is!

Radha was mentioned... Also Mirri, Xantcha (who was Urza's guide to Phyrexia), Takara (Starke of Rath's daughter, pretending to be Volrath), Rayne (Barrin's wife), Jolrael of Jamuraa (Mirage block, Prophecy, and Time Spiral thanks to the purple sheet), and of course some planeswalkers whose names might be familiar: Freyalise, and... Serra.
There are more important female characters in Magic's stories than there are female Magic players.
...Only kidding.
Jokes like this don't help, of course. Sorry.
Is it that difficult to expect people to depict characters in art with biologically possible physiques?
Who might the artist be, anyway?
Whoever painted it was probably commissioned to show a deathly-thin female elf.
Magic art showing women has been unrealistic with regard to any actual human body's physique before, but never like this -- there is a clear stylistic distinction between this block's elf art and at least what we saw in Ravnica (Perilous Forays excepted). Time Spiral block elves mostly look emaciated, but maybe in Lorwyn it's possible for the elves to get some manner of nutrition and still look to us like they're on hunger strike.
It looks like a chunk has been bitten out of her left side, literally. Maybe it's a regeneration picture or something, because unless the above poster is right about the fog, then there is something very wrong with this artwork IMO. It's too thin to even make sense with the rest of her bodies proportions.

It looks vaguely like Ms. Vess at first glance; but I don't think the planeswalker's an elf, despite the hair color.
