Does a "smart giant" image require him sitting down with an enormous cup of wine reading an enormous book in an enormous shop of similar giants discussing the intricacies of giant literature?
Yes it does. Who knew Dragons loved fine literature until we saw Nicol Bolas in his library? Bookwyrms seem a rare breed.
Right. The quality of the art is high, as is to be expected of Wotc lately, but the whole Lorwyn thing is getting really annoying. Magic should not be a game for 10 year old kids (not saying those shouldn't also play it), but for all ages. This looks underwhelming. Even Shriekmaw that's supposed to be a Fear causing, death-dealing elemental, looks like an ornamented parrot.
So you're implying that people of age past 10 shouldn't like faeries? Nor giants? Nor fairytales?

I see both sides though, it would be pehaps too nasty with stuff like Gargadon and Fatal Frenzy and all that. But c'mon it's not like Gargadon is thaaaaat easy to get out. They should let you do something cool like that when you pull him out.
IMO, Pandemonium is much more of a worrisome card than Fling could be.
If it is Fling, the card would go wonderfully in a deck I have...
It could be 'another goblin sacrifice engine' like Siege-Gang.

Never liked the art of this block much, but I do like the Kithkin Warriors... they looks pretty intimidating.
Bad art does not a bad card make... I didn't like Onslaught's look much either... But I doubt we'll be hearing "oooh that's going to be pretty in foil" as much.
It's not that the art is bad at all. WOTC has the best stable of artists in the world. the problem is the concept is no good. we as magic players are simply not going to relate to "a world where creatures of fable live in eternal midsummer" . mtg is predecated on it's edgy and dark nature. someone should ask jarvis what happened to "magepunk". I think that was the term they were throwing around in the art dept. a while back...soft and ideal as a conceptual design point is a terrible misunderstanding of what we the players want. looking forward to shadowfall....

My biggest problem are the down syndrome-esque faces found on the Kithkin and Giants spoiled so far. Well, the sheer skinniness of the elves is also quite ugly. If it weren't for that, however, I'd like it.
Down with retarded (literally) faces on giants and kithkin and down with anorexic elves.
The treefolk, the faeries, even boggarts I've liked so far. It's just the messing with facial proportions that turns good art into bad art.

And so does not lose the enemy's defeat.
Therefore, the victorious military is first victorious and after that does battle.

God, thank goodness they're not constantly sticking to the "mage-punk" style. The dark, edgy style is a good way to appeal to teenagers without a developed sense of aesthetics, but it's quite easily played out. I'm glad to see a style that's different and interesting get some use; I'm sure we'll be returning to an "edgy" setting soon enough.
Does a "smart giant" image require him sitting down with an enormous cup of wine reading an enormous book in an enormous shop of similar giants discussing the intricacies of giant literature?
I would buy a playset of whatever that appeared on.
Not to pick on AS, but this is like the 100th time I've seen this response in this thread.
To all of you: Good Grief! Then don't buy the set, if you feel that strongly about it. This set is not for you--but there will be sets in the future that are for you.
I agree, it's certainly a departure from what we're used to. Isn't that, in itself, kind of refreshing though? Like several others, I'm sick of the 'mage punk' look if that's what it's called. This is a nice visual change...just like Kamigawa was. As fluffy as it is, at least it's not Onslaught/Legions/Scourge art, the last time we had 'tribal' sets. Those were soooo boring, art-wise.
And they'll probably mix it up yet again after Lorwyn. I think this is fine.
Also, remember... The first 2 Lorwyn sets are rumored to be 'light', which these arts certainly are. Just wait for the 'dark' sets #' 3 & 4. It will certainly be different. Torment, much?
I absolutely love the way these images seem to come straight out of a storybook. They are so much more evocative than anything I remember from the recent past, and there's a sense of continuity - that they all belong in the same world - which works very well for me.
I have no idea how the set will shape up mechanically, but I give a big thumbs up for the art so far.

Ambush Krotiq makes me laugh so much. I keep rereading the card and it keeps not having Flash. In what sense is this an ambush again? I just have visions of this huge Krotiq poorly concealed in some bushes, feeling slightly sad that his carefully planned ambushes never seem to work.
I've a doubt. That guy throwing that kind of frog (possibly Fling, is he a Dwarf? cause a frog in a giant hand wouldn't be that size, also there is no other race in Lorwyn by now that can match that creature(merrow, boggarts, giants, faeries, kithkin, treefolk, elves, elementals).

"Now i lay you, down to rest, you'll never be more than second best" (Megadeth)
I'm liking the art so far. +1 to the "enough with the magepunk already" crowd... I am so glad to see something different for Magic, even if it's tailored more towards a "classic fantasy" theme.
I haven't yet come to a decision as to whether I think the giants are depicted as "dumb" or not, but they certainly look feral. Interesting to note: The one with the flamekin lantern and the one sharpening the axe have very bad teeth, but the one being attacked by the faerie seems to have a perfect set of gnashers. I would guess that the giants are feral and instinctive, but not necessarily "dumb" or "uncivilized." As has been mentioned before, even the giant with the axe is using a wheel and has (presumably) fashioned a sturdy-looking door for his residence, with STEPS leading up to it.
The group of kithkin looks quite awesome... they look *ANGRY*.
Whatever he's throwing, it's the same thing as the froggy-impish things from the concept art ween at GenCon, which is leading me to believe they are Boggarts, and therefore Goblins (Goblins are confirmed to be in Lorwyn, and Boggarts are the only thing revealed that seem to fit them.).
I absolutely love the way these images seem to come straight out of a storybook. They are so much more evocative than anything I remember from the recent past, and there's a sense of continuity - that they all belong in the same world - which works very well for me.

I like the art but somehow it's not all coming together for me just yet. Maybe it's not supposed to yet, but I don't see the cohesiveness between the various things we've seen - the elves, merrow, boggarts, kithkin, giants, flamekins, etc. What is the social structure that brings these disparate societies together (or puts them in conflict)? I don't think we've yet seen a catalyst, just a bunch of varied societies with a similar backdrop.
I can't wait until we see more of it to make more sense of it.
did anyone else notice that if the fae is atacking a giant, then that faerie is human size. Lets here is for super-size faeries and midget people of Lorwyn!
Look closely around the nose and you will see more Fae. The swarm at his nose are doing the damage. These things are tiny.
The Fling giant? ALot of people are saying the object he is throwing is not a goblin. Its not an animal... The races in this set look much different. The Boggarts do not look like traditional Goblins and likely do not all look alike. I still think it is throwing a Goblin.
I personally really like this setting for Magic. I get sick of everything being all Magepunk. This goes back to Magic's roots. It also takes alot of fantasy stereotypes and squashes them (horned elves?)
The art is beautiful, and the setting is an excellent contrast to the dystopian setting of Time Spiral.
While the set may not be all to powerful, it is still very exciting to me in its implications. I want some flavour bleed. I want horned elves to appear in a normal block. I want some of this art in Core.
And I love the insect-like fae. I think it is absolutely gorgeous. This piece will compete with Cloudsprite as my favorite piece of faerie art, definately makes up for the craptastic faeries in Homelands (ZOMGMINEEYES!!!1!!)
The guy on the right in the picture of the three kithkin reminds me of the one seen in the picture of one of them running from the giant. You know, the one thats on the back of the 10th edition tips/tokens.

I am probably the only person in the world that collects Tarnished Citadels. Not because I like the card, but because I don't want someone to get his hands on one and then attemp to actually play the damned thing.

I have lurked for a long time, but took enough exception to this post, and those with similar sentiments, to register to intercede on behalf of Lorwyn's honour.
I HATE magepunk. The march of progress is depressing enough in the real world, and 'gritty' artwork catered to 15-year old boys never brought much appeal. I love the idyllic nature of this world, to a great deal. I dropped out of magic for the mirrodin block because the world repulsed me; this is very much the opposite. There has never been a world I have taken a greater shine to; I love Celtic mythology, I love tolkien, I love the bright colours and adventuresome tranquility.
I love fairytales. Personally, the worst part of this block is that it is only two sets, but what can you do?
I even love tribal.
Edit: As for the art, love it all, but the etchings on the kithkin weaponry is a nice touch, and I love the caging-giant's expression.
Look closely around the nose and you will see more Fae. The swarm at his nose are doing the damage. These things are tiny.
Actually those things in front of his nose look like blood and fleshy bits to me that has just been hacked off that giant's nose. I really am not seeing any other fae there. I mean, the slices on his nose are bigger than they are. If those where other fae showing how small the closer one is how could they make such relatively huge slashes on his nose?
I hate the Loryrn Art too, but for a completely different reason than anyone else's.
THERE'S NO DINOSAURS!!!!!!!
And I would love to see "Chuck" come back in some form or another.

Just because somebody looks big and dumb does not neccessarily mean that they are dumb. Maybe its just a front.

Okay... could you show me some of your favorite bits of Yu-gi-oh art? Really, because they all kinda look the same style to me.
Granted, pre fifth edition stuff kinda sucks.
