LOL coffers is bad until at Grand Prix Dallas someone sends a hellbent demonfire your way with it Ouch was all my control deck could say at the time. Regardless Coffers sees play maybe not in tier one currently BUT it does see play.
In response to those earlier: No, I wasn't trolling.
The Coffers are Extended-legal and should be evaluated as such. Given that Urborg is also in Extended, I should have accounted for that and messed up on that one. Coffers will in fact break even at three if you have Swamp Urborg Coffers, which I'm sure happens fairly often (Having played block with 4 Urborg, I believe it).
As for why it isn't used: What would you use it FOR? One guy said hellbent Demonfire. I like that answer. If you want lots of mana in Extended, Tron still exists. With Coffers, you're running a deck that demands specifically BLACK mana. And a deck that needs lots of Black mana is probably running cards that are not as good as, say, a deck that can use a lot of colorless mana and some Tron pieces.
While someone probably could make, like... [some sort of UB control tron-esque build with Tolaria West and Coffers and Urborg?] why would anyone bother in a format with fetchlands, duals, and a vibrant early game? Sure, you get a lot of black mana. That's awesome when you draw Coffers. But how do you win? Hellbent Demonfire seems nice until you realize that, as a previous poster said, there's stuff like Blood and Edict early game... which is utterly dead against control. Start casting those worthless mana sinks like they're going out of style if you want Hellbent. It just seems like Coffers tying you to black mana limits your deck in a rather uncool way. It's too much of a lategame card and its real use is limited to cute tricks with X-spells IMO, but there's a million ways I could be wrong. Someone come up with a deck that proves me wrong, I like to make large amounts of mana so I'll gladly play it.

Tarmogoyf has no evasion, yet it sees tonnes of play. What makes this any different?
Mono-black aggro running Nantuko Shade, Stromgald Crusader and/or Consume Spirit has fun with Cabal Coffers. Sure, Sudden Shock/Death kills both of those creatures, but everything has a weakness.
Is mono-black aggro tearing up the extended tournament scene? No. Is it still a good/decent deck? Yes.
It's also pretty much an auto-include in any primarily black control deck.
I use Urborg, Cabal Coffers and Maze of Ith. Urborg makes maze of ith better and with coffers I can get out an early Debtor's Knell. So there is my use of cabal coffers. It helps my deck in so many ways, like playing wrath and a phyrexian arena on the same turn, early Angel of despair not to mention death grasp. Every now and then I take a mana burn or two when I use it, but the benifit makes up for it.(not to mention Martyr of Sands) My mana base is 4 Scrubland, 4 Godless shrine, 2 Maze of Ith, 2 Caves of Koilos, 4 tainted field, 2 Urborg, 2 cabal coffers and 2 plains. I get Urborg and Coffers together 75% of the time and it always helps.

Hehe, I am looking forward to seeing these as prizes. Maybe they aren't brilliant in extended or whatever, I wouldn't know, but what I do know is they rock in chaos-multiplayer games
