In Tarfire's art, is that Goblin flinging a giant ball of...excrement? Or is it supposed to be goat meat, as suggested by the flavor text? (By the way, the flavor text is hilarious.)
Those goblin children in the art of Wort, Boggart Auntie are actually kind of cute. Of course, the ability on the card suggests that the goblin children are resurrected goblins, which I don't think is actually the case, so in this case, not the best matching of card-ability to the card's flavor and art.

- Jon Finkel Facts: (follow the link at left to see more Facts, or add more Facts!)
- Chuck Norris counted to infinity twice—because he was trying to count how much damage Jon Finkel deals in an average game.
- Jon Finkel believes in maintaining a healthy, balanced diet. He gets all his fiber from eating Magic cards for breakfast, and all his protein from eating Magic players for lunch.
The artwork, flavour text, and card names all make me miss Tempest block. Now that was good.
As for the cards, Tarfire is useful in limited and perhaps the odd constructed deck too. Wort doesn't make sense to me as a shaman (unnecessary catch-all creature type), and 3/3 legends for 4 don't usually make many decks. Casual.
Looks like wizards is giving into Rebecca Guay fanboys and allowing other similar artists in.
Firstly, this is not similar to Rebecca Guay. The only similarity is the visible white canvas areas and that they style is not the full oil/digital fantasy-punk-photorealism blend that Magic usually uses. These artists and Rebeccay Guay share the fact that they are not the usual style, but they are not near the same as each other.
Otherwise, though, according to the article (from JJ) it seems that these illustrations were done by concept artists for Lorwyn, and it seems as though it wasn't planned for them to do artwork. Perhaps they came too close to the deadline and those guys just happened to be nearby.
Too many people are knocking the art for these cards. Variety in card art is awesome, and personally, there are too many artists with too similar styles as it is. I rejoiced at Richard Kane Ferguson's return in TSP block... These cards with their offbeat art really make me look forward to the set.
That aside, tarfire is worse than shock in any conceivable red deck that isn't running tarmogoyf. On the other hand, if you DO run tarmogoyf, it is almost always better. Though the loss of Seal of Fire makes the enchantment portion of tarmogoyf harder to obtain, this shock makes it easier to get a quick +2/+2 boost. I really think Tarmogoyf may see the door if he gets any more out of hand than he is now.
Wort? She's pretty good. The black goblin tribe is looking quite fun, though I am rather sad that I haven't seen a good mono-red goblin yet.

I think that WoTC felt that a lot of the players thought Standard was becoming mundane and a joke from all the nuked cards floating around. R&D took a vacation, and MaRo just started reprinting things.
Tarfire isn't 'strictly' better than shock.
If there are zero cards in both graveyards, you can shock a tarmagoyf. you can't tarfire one
Of course, where the card shines is in conjunction with 'gofy.
I love the art of the legendary Auntie. The card is decent, and almost certainly insane in limited. I think cards like this are going to make changeling cards very high picks. They will be the glue that binds tribal archetypes together.

I'm trying to understand your statement, but I just can't. Why is tarfire worse than shock, unless you're referring to the chance that your opponent will get a bonus from you having a tribal card in your graveyard?
You're the one who brought up "strictly". But yeah, you're right. Tacking "tribal" onto a spell doesn't necessarily make it better. Lightning Bolt is strictly better than Shock. Tarfire? No.
(and no, don't try and bring up a scenario where you only want to do 2 damage, and 3 would somehow be too much)
(and no, don't try and bring up a scenario where you only want to do 2 damage, and 3 would somehow be too much)
But you must always play around Honorable Passage!
Anyway, the card seems really good. It's one turn faster than Dryad, which is important, as is basically the same thing in the deck you'll end up playing this in (Goblins).

Obviously its because your opponent is always playing Tarmogoyf!

Why did I ever think a signature in comic sans was a good idea?
I personally love both artwork. And in the Auntie, it isn't the "Babies" that get my attention most.
These goblins are just plain cool-looking, IMO. I'm glad they don't have them all the same, like in Kamigawa.
If I hit someone with a Tarfire, I'm going to say "tsk tsk tsk.... you shoulda been playing Tarmogoyf..... idiot!"
But seriously, I like Shock, and having 8 in a deck actually will be pretty fun for the next 2 years. Could make a standard all burn deck. Okay, maybe a couple creatures. Mogg Fanatics.

R_E: Basically what everyone else said. The chances of running into him make it not worth running, not when shock is right there and nowhere near as bad against him. Unless you run Tarmogoyf yourself, of course.

What would you pay for a B/R 3/3 with Fear that draws you a card every turn?
Wort is very well costed. she has "must kill me" stamped all over her and provides a source of hand replenishment at a reasonable price. Spend the first few turns emptying your hand and burning blockers, then play Wort. redraw Tarfire or Fodder Launch for free and swing for 3. Pretty tight, and don't forget that you don't have to give up your draw or tap her so she's "kill me or I'll card advantage you to death" material.

I'm old school, about as OLD school as they get. think 4th Edition/Ice Age old school. Unfortunatley in the "Real world" you cant Incinerate your bank manager and sadly now I have joined the ranks of the older population, and my time is taken up by things like reasearching Mortgage Refinance Rates and where to get the best possible mortgage quotes. I have however discovered the joys of Online Forex Trading which at least allows me to keep the bills in check!
Obviously its because your opponent is always playing Tarmogoyf!
That is so true! I play poker, and even they play Tarmogoyf.
(He's somewhere between Full House and Four of a Kind)
I didn't liked how the writer of SCG said this was better than Gempalm Incinerater:
First, it's limited to two damage.
Second, it doesn't draw a card.
Third, it is counterable (Incinerater is a triggered ability).
Fourth, it even gets stopped by Meddling Mage.
If it said three damage, than I would really play it. I'm not sure now.
Why are people hating on the art? I think both are great, especially tarfire. Its a whole helluva lot better than the art for the new incinerate. Its not some boring, stock picture of someone being burnt.
Just a hunch but I think Wort is going to be very good in constructed. This was probably already mentioned but she can get back a Nameless Inversion every turn (or a tarfire but thats more obvious). Casting Last Gasp every turn is strong.
And for that matter, how about playing nameless inversion in a goblin legacy deck splashing black? Works with ringleader just like tarfire does.
I have to admit that I LOVE the art of the Auntie... so..hmm.. old school and it's a cool card. I've never been a fan of goblins, but I guess this time around things are gonna change.
i also love the art on the auntie, but i don't like it on the tarfire.....but more importantly i'm upset at the name, cuz it looks like i'll never get my split card tar//feather

If that is the card you wish to return, then soitoinly.
How did you quote a post that was deleted yesterday, as soon as it had been posted?

That might not be an unreasonable assumption....

If they aren't, then they deserve to be mauled by the obvious superiority of tarfire.

Needs more Pyrohemia. And possibly Chandra. Too bad there's no Ensnaring Bridge and Grafted Skullcap in standard.
