6/6 evasive black creature for 6cc, with all upside abilities. red's getting elemental mana acceleration in the form of smokeroller and god knows what else. how could dread be bad?
It's not good, it's questionable in constructed, but it's certainly worth looking at for other formats like limited and multiplayer. The card doesn't deserve big "wows" but it doesn't deserve "boos" either. It's "meh" (mediocre) at worst and has "potential" at best.
Again... 6/6 evasive black creature for 6cc doesn't that make the Timmy in you kick and scream?
I know a guy who runs MBC with a little toolbox of finishers just because he can afford to (ie, 1 Phage, 1 Evincar, 2 Tombstalker all to backup his 4 Korlash and his Warhammer) so this would definitely fit in his deck It's black's way of dealing with untargetables without using Edict or having to wrath the board.
Some people said you will lose the game because of the damage you are taking, and if you just let everything through with this thing you will
But thats not going to happen.
The smart way to play is to attempt to block etc as normal, think it like a normal 6/6 then anything you can't handle will die.
Children of the Korlis comes to mind as a way to return the life you lose. for a casual deck
I think for highlander it will be good, limited bomb and a possible finisher for black control decks, and a cool casual card.
I mean i would happy opening this compared to many other rares wizards has printed in the last few years.
Well I think back over in Time Spiral they first previewed white's Evangelize as their first card. And wow, did that ever set the tone for TSB for white.
In any case I am not saying its the same here with Green and Black. I just don't like the way they preview semi-good (or really bad) cards initially. It seems to send the wrong messages. But, I guess its to interest new players? /shrug
Teeg however, was a good card they happened to slip in between the cracks of their initial cards. Even though hes a "Kithkin Bear" with nice abilities. (A playable Zoo legend)
Bluefliersworryme a little. I would rather think they make the :3mana::symu::symu::symu: incarnation suck then it be godly. Too much painful memories in trying to get Keiga and/or Meloku back in Kamigawa. People suck in trades when it comes to blue cards.
[card=Dismal Failure]"Two magi could trade spells all day and never crown a victor.
The real battle is not one of power but of will.

It doesn't have to have flying. MaRo did say that we'd likely see more keywords for blue creatures in Lorwyn. We've got the following available:
Flying, flash, shroud, protection, islandwalk. We can safely cross off the last, and probably shroud (waaay too swingy in Limited). The rest are equally possible.
i did say it MIGHT... flash and shroud might be possible (although i think it they might have given this to green since i think there are more creatures with shroud in green lately), not much with protection and landwalk... there is the unblockable ability which is mainly blue... i'm still betting on flying though...
dread seems to be getting so little credit... it is efficiently costed for its size and abilities. not every single one might like it, but can't we just appreciate it? i don't think it would see that much play in the new standard, but it is good enough that some people could use it.
I am think blues incarnation will give all your creatures flying or "ophidian effect" something along that line

Again... 6/6 evasive black creature for 6cc doesn't that make the Timmy in you kick and scream?
Nah. The "Timmy" in me is only really excited by gigantic stuff that I know doesn't have a chance of being playable, but that's flavorful. Jokulmorder fit that mold.
I'm more annoyed than anything by cards that are basically masquerading as tournament playable in a Timmy shell. It's not that "Timmy" to me (it's a bit too small, can't get itself bigger and I have to take DAMAGE to make the ability work? WTH, says Timmy). It's not that Spike either, unless there are other cards that will cheat this into play in the set. It's definitely not very Johnny, since it's so straightforward. It reminds me of Dark Depths (to keep with the coldsnap refs). This is a card I would be annoyed at opening in a booster.
Gee, a tribal block where the first set contains a cycle of 3CCC casting cost fatties? Where do they come up with such original and innovative, previously unheard of ideas?
We knew there would be a cycle of 3XXX costing Incarnations ever since we got Vigor confirmed. So I really don't understand your post at all.
Yes, what a shame that the first card previewed by Ferrett (the MULTIPLAYER guy) is totally useless for you guys.
Do you even admit that there are people who actually read Ferrett's article everyday and enjoy multiplayer with it's inovative decks over tournaments and single player where most decks are just plucked from the internet.
This card stops your opponent from pinging you with his critters.
Also this card is black, black will destroy your creatures before they can attack. This card makes sure that the creatures that didn't die to your removal will still die when they attack you:
So now you are facing 3 opponents and you have an Akroma, Angel of Wrath in play.
Who do you attack? The guy that kills your Akroma if you damage him or soembody else?
I know that the enchantment wasn't that good but this is different.
A 6 mana 6/6 Fear body beats most 4 mana enchantments.
I like how this card also has a great evasive ability.
It's 6/6, mostly it can't be blocked, and it still protects you from attack.
Dread is [ THIS MUCH ] better than the green one, but still clunky as hell (give us Visara instead... Mmm). If any of you care to use it, remember it CAN be a reanimation target if you have a Yixlid Jailer in play (when it tries to hit the graveyard). Why you'd choose this over Akroma (or any other better reanimation target)... I don't know.
I have a feeling this entire cycle will suck. Still, that's what I thought after seeing Roiling Horror, and a few of that cycle have seen serious competitive play...
It's funny, he built it up with "So many cards with awesome names have sucked..." Ouch.
I think that 3BBB isn't that difficult to achieve in the current environnment thanks to Urborg and Graven Cairns. WWW or UUU should be more difficult to achieve...
A 6/6 for 6manas with a No Mercy on it... Casual but quite an effective one!
Plus people are forgetting Smokeroller - that'll pop Dread out faster...:o

You're not your deck.
You're not how much mana you have in your pool.
You're not your half-naked, animè girl card sleeves.
You're not your DCI rating.
You're not your freaking ‘Coldsnap Prerelease’ t-shirt.
You are the all-singing, all-dancing crap of the Multiverse.
So.. We can't see another cycle of 6 mana 5/5 flying creatures since it allready has been done?
It has only 3XXX as manacost and elemental type that can be compared to that cycle, there are over 9000 magic cards, offcourse you will see the same costed cycles.
In my eyes, this cycle is much better although the black card for once isn't the best of them.
Agreed..people weren't complaining that we were just "rehashing" Apocalypse when they printed Angel of Despair in Ravnica. (What? A Black and White Angel that blows things up??!! That's sooooo been done before!!)
Then again..most of them weren't even playing when Apoc. hit the seen...go figure.

Shroud could be way too swingy in limited but a 6/6 with Shroud and the ability to return even if it dies makes it a candidate for the best in the series without even needing a splashy cool other ability. It also leaves Flash/Flying/Lifelink for White.
I'm not sure they could have picked a more boring card to preview.
I think maybe they have decided that the tournament players will stick around to see the set no matter what they show, since they primarily care about function over form. It's the Johnnies and the Timmies that need to be won over. I'm guessing (hoping, really) that Flores has a tourney card to show, although it's pretty funny watching him try to shill a card that he thinks is terrible, too. Win-win on Thursday everyone

Forever known, whenever said, ancient rhyme, forgotten dead.
The blue one is probably going to have either Protection from Tribal, Vigilance, or the cycle isn't limited to 6/6'rs and we've just seen the 2 that are.
Plus people are forgetting Smokeroller - that'll pop Dread out faster...:o
turn 2 is the fastest that I have calculated
turn 1: mountain -> rite of flame -> smokeroller
turn2: land of chosen color -> rite of flame for the 3 colorless then tap the roller+ the said colored land to play the said color elemental guy )

Nice - wonder if the Red version will have haste so you can get stuck in immediately

Well, I was amazed at how people thought Vigor was good, but now some claim that this one could be used in MBC. Please get real. MBC has Korlash. On turn 5-6 your opponent's creatures should already be in check or you're in trouble. The card is a huge limited bomb, but not constructed material.

Yeah, but it's not as though Korlash is that great either. I, for one, cannot understand why people will play Korlash over, say, Skeletal Vampire or Avatar of Woe. Granted, Avatar of Woe comes down later, but I'd still say it does a better job than Korlash. Moreover, there's still Urza's factory, which probably still does a better job than Korlash. Frankly, I'm surprised people play Korlash in control decks at all. I could see him in an Aggro-Control deck....but not in Control or Aggro.
I certainly hope there's a better black finisher in Llorwyn than Dread. All things considered....I might just splash red or white and play Akroma.

You just need a few removal spells to stop yourself from dying and black has a few good life drain style cards that give you life.

Check out the last tribal block, with cards like Rorix Bladewing, Visara the dreadful, Arcanis the omnipotent, Jareth, leonine titan and Silvos, Rogue Elemental. What he means is, it's been done before and they're just rehashing Onslaught block instead of coming up with new ideas.

The guy is good. He's outclassed, but he's good.
And, as stated, very good for multiplayer. That's the format I like to play.
