That card is completely different than what we were given by Hydro. Same name, that's it. And the name fits the flavor, so it's easy to assume two people have named a green card after it.
A cheap green Aura that makes walls and is named "Lignify". Nothing in common. At all.
And, is there flavor text/collector's # for this?
While I am all for green getting flavorful removal, it should still be kept in mind that this is a very mediocre card. The fact that it deals with lots of rare bombs means very little: constructed decks hardly ever use expensive rare bombs, and if they do, this is a very narrow answer, and limited decks have maybe one expensive rare bomb in their deck, on average, and this is still a very narrow answer.
The only deck that might want this is a defensive deck with a ton of fliers. Good luck finding such a deck to fit this into.
Pongify is better than this by a mile, BTW, because you can use it on your own creatures when a good target doesn't present itself on the other side of the board.
What?! Look at the initial post; he is dead. Deceased. Kaputt. Indefinitely horizontal. In mafia games, you see, people are occasionally "killed off," and when that sad event occurs, he or she is no longer allowed to post, on account of rigor mortis and what-have-you.
'Welcome to Mafia Salvation', it said, 'Population: 3,660.' And someone, they never figured out who, had painted on the sign in red letters: '1,831 to lynch.'
Yeah, but green could do that easily enough without first giving it more toughness...:-/
To bad it isn't enchant permanent...:-/
well I would rather have my big green critter go through a 0/4 then say...anything with power and abilites to it

I am the stone that the builder refused I am the visual, the inspiration, that made lady sing the blues I'm the spark that makes your idea bright The same spark that lights the dark so that you can know your left from your right I am the ballot in your box; the bullet in the gun That inner glow that lets you know to call your brother "son" The story that just begun, the promise of what's to come And I'mma remain a soldier til' the war is won
A cheap green Aura that makes walls and is named "Lignify". Nothing in common. At all.

Well, the name would actually mean that they're after the same effect--more so because 'lignify' is an actual word.
I think what the guys were referring to was how similar the effect was, flavor-wise, and not in a broad manner. In Magic-geek: they were discussing a Vorthos similarity, not a Melvin similarity.
To lignify something basically turns it to wood. Considering that both cards in question are green, we can assume that both spells turn the target into a wooden thing--still living, but in an altered, weaker state.
How do you think of Utopia Vow as being in flavour? Not to contest that; I really don't know how to think of that card. I would appreciate reading your thoughts.
Lignify is interesting. It's like "Whatever you were before doesn't matter. You are now a tree. BE TREE."
It's not entirely removal though. A 0/4 could be annoying, unless your deck is all Green fat.
Which takes us back to the theme: [that] Green either stoops to a support role for other colours (in the way of mana generation or providing fat), or has to be used Mono to work.
Well, if you pair green with another color you might as well use their removal, since it's generally better. I personally enjoy building mono-green decks that aren't aggro decks, but they tend to come up short when faced with the types of creatures that green cant easily deal with (flying/evasion, big, powerful abilities). With this and Utopia Vow, its a lot easier to make a green deck that can consistently have an answer to the Akromas and Hellkites that other colors like to sling around.
As for the 'not entirely removal' bit, the deck that I mentioned earlier tends to win by attacking with 10-30 3/3 or 4/4 guys in one turn, so one 0/4 blocker doesn't tend to hinder that game plan. Dipping into Lorwyn block, seeing as Lignify leads us into a Treefolk deck, Timber Protector happens to have 4 power and can plow right through said 0/4 blocker (Timber Protector only makes your OWN treefolk indestructible). It also makes your Lignify indestructible. Gee how about that?
As for the flavor of utopia vow, I'm pretty sure it was explained in a wizards article somewhere, but the gist of it is that the creature takes a... Utopia Vow, forsaking combat to pursue the mana-making arts. Sounds pretty green to me.
Heh neat flavor. "I trap you like Urza, in a friggin tree!" *aheh*Green getting removal is nice to see it get. So far we have seen removal for 4 of the 5 colors, so the question remains, where is all the blue hiding?
[card=Dismal Failure]"Two magi could trade spells all day and never crown a victor.
The real battle is not one of power but of will.
If your confidence breaks, so too shall you." —Venser[/card]
The only deck that might want this is a defensive deck with a ton of fliers. Good luck finding such a deck to fit this into.
Actually, the sealed league deck I'm playing right now is UG, with plenty of ways to get past stuff (trample, Ephemeron, Cloudskate, etc.). The deck is doing extremely well, but it folds to Saltfield Recluse. My removal is... um... Piracy Charm? Cloudskate + Cancel? Ovinize? This card would be great in that deck. I see this card as useful in a lot of UG decks.
Well, in TPF UG decks, anyway. Who knows if that archetype will even work in Lorwyn. Still, this looks like a fun limited card-- another interesting case where you might pick it, you might play it, it could turn the game. No one has to think about whether or not they should pick Ichor Slick.
Playing Spawning Pool's activated ability creates a delayed triggered ability that triggers during the cleanup step.
No. Playing Spawning Pool's (second) activated ability creates a continuous effect that ends during the cleanup step. There is no triggered ability, delayed or otherwise, involved.
I actually like this card. now the thought that it wont be good for the color its in, thinking that Green cant handle it as well is kinda off. dont forget that Green is the color that gives us creatures that are damned big for their cost and will more often than not be trampling over the newly dubbed blocker. this is really good against i dont know, any BigFliers and Amazingutilitycreatures, and also any creature that can get really Huge. and all it leaves them with is a 0/4 vanilla creature.
Finally GREEN removal!! not the first but definitely a good one!
And ooh I love the flavour... Lignify *woot* very nice! would have been better if it made the treefolk defender, but I guess that'd be too harsh.. still its already 0/4 might as well go all the way.
its a nicely flavored card and will be useful to green in limited, especially if you've got some other good treefolk tribe stuff to go with it. this is clearly nowhere near the constructed level of power but i can still dig it just because its got the right balance of coolness, flavorfulness, elegance, and interesting play situations in draft.
The name is nice, the card is average. Decent limited fare, but I can hardly understand the excitement about it. Sure, it takes care of a troublesome critter, but still leaves your opponent with a 0/4. Not that 0/4 are threatening, but still a wall to scale. You can make your random 1/1 useless guy into a 0/4 too I guess, if you're desperate for defense, but that won't happen very often. Ok, but nothing great.

I enjoy the flavor and usefulness of Lignify. Could potentially offer up some Johnny-relevant usefulness later on. I hope so. Good find and a nice card.

hehe one reason I like this so much is the flavour the play on the word lignify... at 2cc, it is quite playable, another plus! its not that wow, but on the whole, it is quite nice
I actually am starting to like this for a treefolk tribal deck, you either use it as a form of removal against a major threat or you can turn your own 1/1 mana elves(necessary in Treefolk because of their costs) into 0/4 treefolk which get the benefits of being a treefolk like indestructibility and +1/+1 from Timber Protector.
This aura smells green midrange. Stop their offense/tricks now and trample them later.
I can see big and scary treefolk thanking lignify for buying the time for them to hit play, without to mention that it pumps the battlewand guy. Humble and Ovinize flavor helps it too!
A very intersting card. Im not sure what i think yet, at least green has creatures big enough to kill it, but its not even a 1/1 trade. still not bad for green i guess.
Just put it in U/G. It already has the evasion. This is a a 2 mana removal spell for them. Or you'll just pickles lock and it won't matter how many of their guys are trees. Much better than utopia vow. It is decent in limited if you have evasion or just big critters. This is a strong card with constructed applications for the right deck. I expect to see it in lists.
I love this card. Dual purpose. Pseudo-removal and then also if you are playing Doran, basically a 4/4 beast. Very cool. I am liking treefolk tribal quite a lot. I hope it becomes viable, which it looks like it will.
