hmmm...
Turn 1: Plains, Martyr of Sands
Turn 2: Plains, Mindstone, sac Martyr (assuming you still have one land in hand, that oughta be a 9 life boost. (29)
Turn 3: land, Ajani, gain 2 life (31)
Turn 4: gain 2 life (33), wrath (or drop/sac another martyr, if you do this, wrath next turn before you pop the token)
Turn 5: token. do whatever else you like for the turn, it's not gonna matter, you're on 30+ life with a 30+/30+ creature on the table
Of course, this relies on the idea that your opponent's going to be playing control If not, then he's welcome to hit Ajani since you'll keep gaining life with Ajani and Martyrs until you're out of range and ready to drop an Akroma
What makes you think that an opponent is not going to attack you/your planeswalker?
What makes you think that an opponent is not going to attack you/your planeswalker?
The thing is, if they attack you, you're gaining life anyway, and getting ready to shoot off a rather large Avatar. If they attack Ajani, you'll likely manage to stall long enough to drop that Akroma and destroy them. The point is, this one-time investment is stalling the game without any further mana commitment, leaving you free to build up to their utter doom.
Oh HO! Per tonight's previews, it's not that your creatures get +1/+1 til end of turn... the each get a +1/+1 counter, it's just the vigilance that's til end of turn.

i think ajani is very good now. i thought he was good before but this is even better. he will be very good in limited and better than what he would've been in T2.

The change definitely makes it much fore playable in T2. Before, I was quite underwhelmed with Ajani, but now it seems that it will fit quite well in any sort of midrange creature deck sporting white. In particular, I can see him getting played alongside of Spike Feeder... that'll be quite fun.
Ajani still sucks though. WotC is going to have to do something awesome with planeswalkers because so far none of them are viable, and they don't seem to mesh with the overall set at all.

I can see a shape of a deck forming with giants. Jotun Grunt (psst, hes a giant), Brion, Blind-Spot Giant, Ajani and hopefully a few more cards. Creative decks people.

I like the interaction of the middle ability with Quagnoth. Play Ajani early, start gaining life, then play Quagnoth. Then every turn you add another counter and bash face while your opponent can't attack back with worthless little 4/5 Tarmogoyfs thanks to vigilance. Maybe not a constructed-worthy card, but a little more satisfying than I had thought.

I've got a hunch the "rule breaking" for Lorwyn is something more extreme than has already been seen personally...
My personal bet is that they're going to allow Planeswalkers to be used in ANY format forever even after their set rotates out.
Especially since it fits the flavor of planeswalking.
So yea, they might not be insane for THIS T2 but who knows what T2 in a few years looks like.
Honestly, how much does a +1/+1 counter matter? Unless you're playing weenie, it won't function very well. Still, white is the weenie color. It probably makes it better than liliana vess now. Still isn't playable and still not much better. I wish we could still be wrong about the other planeswalkers but wizards previewed all of them already. Why did they spoil everything exciting so early? It would of been nice to keep them secret till the pre-release. Now we have nothing to look forward to.
Do you (anybody) think planeswalkers are usable in extended or legacy?
Highly doubtful. Those formats contain more efficient counterspells and removal (like Lightning Bolt), lightning-fast creature rushes, huge amounts of disruption (Duress, for example), and other things that are just plain unfriendly to extra-vulnerable 3-5 mana enchantments that slowly generate a small amount of card advantage.
The only one with a little potential is Garruk, who also seems the strongest in standard. The extended G/U tron deck could make good use of him. He can generate a win with his tokens, he's easily defended by counterspells and Moment's Peace, and his untap ability can generate 5-6 mana quite easily.

I agree whole heartedly with you first statement. The other not so. I think in standard, Ajani and Garruk are easily the best planeswalkers. (Chandra too, she kicks the ass of other planeswalkers) Garruk will be good in any aggro/beatdown deck that contains green. Ajani will see quite some play too; magic seems to be setting up a more aggro/beatdown approach with this set. The +1+1 counters will be great as you will be meeting many mirror matches. I think Aggro white-green will be very popular. Life gain and creatures that are bigger than an opponents who plays the same creatures will be a great advantage. Not to mention the fact u can attack and still defend with vigilance. And even finish off with an avatar. Ajani is also headache against control decks. As with ajani even yr insignificant threats will eventually be a BIG threat plus there is always the possibility of one swing kill avatar!

Awesome, I knew Ajani wasn't such a bad guy!
(I'm joking.)
I'm really glad Ajani's buff is permanent; that makes him much, MUCH more playable than before.

Good weenie color with +1/+1 to all plus until EOT vigilance for the extra bonus of it definitely seems workable into something.
Heck even the last ability seems pretty darn nice now that its not static.
