this will be nice in mono-U pickles, possibly as a replacement for cancel since mono-U "cancels" the mana restrictions on it. very nice, probably strictly better than dismal failure if you can keep up the 3-U

I am a long time control player. When I scan thru spoilers for any new set, I look thru blue for my favorite little phrase... "Counter Target Spell." Saying no is pretty much one of my favorite things to say when my opponent wants to play something I just don't want them to have. And now we have a "charm" type spell that basically says "No." and then chose to do so many other fun things. And at the cost of 4, I'm really seeing no drawbacks in the cost department.
For "UUUU" we have a Boomerang + Counterspell...
For "UUUU" we have Dismiss. I'm honestly surprise they didn't reprint Dismiss because Wizards has an interesting way of, from time to time, printing one card and making an almost identical (and almost alwys better) version
For "UUUU" we have Counterspell and a better version of Deluge. (On this note, better start planning on playing important spells during your SECOND main phase. Lest you find yourself unable to attack with your creatures. Counterspell plus a "kicked" Orim's Chant)
For "UUUU" we have, for those who are creative enough to realize it, Swift Silence Lite. At least I am pretty sure it works this way. If your opponent somehow has 2 spells on the stack, by all means, counter them both. "In response to my ______ I'm going to _______" you say. "Ok. No." Lots of situations can come up, but yeah, nice to have lots options.
And if you want to mix and match the other 3 well by all means. I just like the control aspect of saying No. And then getting a little something else out of the card I used to say No.
And on a quick note. I hope the Black command has a "Mutilate" type ability. Even Masacre. Or even better. And if the Red one has some kind of Pyroclasm-esque ability I'll be happy. Why? Because I want this statement... "Fewer wrath effects in this block vs. in Onslaught. Makes tribal matter more as creatures can't get wiped out as often." I mean as it stands now, the white Command has a pretty decent "Wrath" effect. But we split the creatures into two... Beefy and Weenie. And we can remove all artifacts or enchantments. So I just hope colours that are deserving of some kind of mass removal, GET IT. =)
Well, I have more thoughts and ideas, but working as late as I do, at this point in time I'm just gonna wrap things up. Until next time!

Cryptic Command is: a solid counterspell, prevents a combat phase leaving them open on the next trun, is a boomerang, and can catrip if nothing else.
The point with this replacing Cancel is it gives you options and tempo no matter what you chose. Plus, it sets up for Brine lockdown. For one more U, I'll take that any day.
Personally, if I go mono blue, I'd go 4 of these in place of remand, and 4 Familiar's Trickery in place of Cancel.

Um, you can choose only 2 out of the 4 choices your given, you CAN'T repeat any one choice. It's pretty obvious you can't repeat, beacause if we go by your way, then the 3GG Command will be a strictly better Plow Under, and Plow Under was already an amazing card, so there would be no point in making it obsolete, in other words the Green Command would be broken.
I'm not too terribly worried about the green command being broken at this point. As far as I'm concerned, Green has some of the best cards in the format and will continue its rise with Lorwyn (given things like Teeg, indestructable trees, and goyfs). Not that these cards are broken, but they are solid if not very playable.
What I'm concerned with is with all of these one-per-color cards (e.g. the elementals, the Command Spells), is one going to just be flat out nuts and leave the rest as barely playable in limited, or are they all going to be worthless. Rarely has each color had a very playable one-per-color card. Clearly, Cryptic is NOT worthless, but with goyf making all these mono-green or green splash-for-goyf decks, I hope Green's Command won't have an effect like Plow Under.
However, if Cryptic does turn out to be the nut of the Command spells, I wouldn't be unhappy, maybe mildly disapointed. They are losing Remand after all and need some form of replacement.:rolleyes2:
This card is solid. However, I'm more excited over the red and black command possibilities.
Possibilities? Well, I've heard the Black command costs XBB (Perhaps a mix of Drain life, discard, card-draw+lose life, and -X/-X?)... and the Red Command has Pyroclasm as one option and damage to a player as another or so I'l told.
That should open up some speculation for you my brother...

So...
Black Command
XBB
Sorcery
Choose 2 - Deal X damage to target player and you gain X life, or draw X cards and lose X life, or target creature gets -X/-X until end of turn, or target player reveals X cards in his or her hand, choose one. That player discards that card.
Seems a bit wordy, but the only way to make it not-so-broke...still would seem mighty too strong to me
Edit: Actually, would "All creatures get -X/-X" be too strong at that cost?

the way you have it worded, you can cast this for 5 mana, deal three damage to your opponent, and draw three cards...
seems a tad strong... even a drain life effect is pretty strong, because, in monoblack, there's no difference between BBX and B1X
still interesting possibilities. glad we're not just seeing 5 different commands with the same casting cost

wow... this means that the black command can let me deal X damage AND draw X card since the life gain from drain life cancels out the loss of life...
Couldn't, in theory, the black command be XBBB? That wouldn't be too overpowered. But I do hope that it has the -X/-X. I miss Mutilate. I miss Masacre. I miss black mass removal effects. Yah, yah. I know. We have Damnation. But come on. Those other ones are just plain fun!

Obviously the Xs on the black command can't be all powerful. I'm expecting some of the choices to be like these:
Remove X target cards in a graveyard, target creature gets +X/-X, each player discards X cards/loses X life etc.
Call me pessimistic..

Wow, this idea is so broken, it makes Cryptic Command look like Embershot.
Imo, one of them has to be, "return target creature with converted mana cost of X or less from your(or from a) graveyard to play", and another should be "search your library for a card with converted mana cost X or less and put it into your hand, then shuffle your library, also there would be no pseudo-skeletal scrying, too broken, the -X/-X to a creature is good, not to ALL creatures though, we already got Consume Spirit and Tendrils, so I'd doubt the first part, and lastly, the discard part you have up is good, so I hope the card ends up being similar to the way I described, any other ideas?

We already have enough graveyard removal too, although not impossible, but I wouldn't want to see it have it as one of the choices.
except cancel costs 3, not 4
