tribal tournys are going to get really awesome after this set comes out. the merfolk is good in any merfolk deck and the trio is just plain awesome. im hoping to get the trio and ajani at my prerelease so i can destroy all my oppenents with white.

and look around every once and a while you could miss it. - ferris bueller
Both of those cards are decent but they also require a heavy commitment to their tribe.
I could see them being played in standard if their respective tribes are decent though.
I'm not sure about these champions though. You need 2 other creatures of the same type out already to play it, otherwise you're just handing your opponent an easy 2-for-1. Additionally, in terms of damage to an opponent you're really getting a 3 power creature for 4. Still, he could be played.
I think blink could make it into the UW build of merfolk, andmainly for this guy. We'll see if the other merfolk have any good187 abilities, but drawing cards is my favorite part of magic, and I love this.
The Klithkin is kinda boring, but it's a limited bomb at least...
The merfolk will be good in a mono-blue merfolk aggro... that's it. The kithkin is very solid and the champion cost is hardly a drawback, particularly with any come-into-play abilities. It will definately ensure that Kithkin are able keep up with the hords of goblins and elves that are no doubt going to be running rampant in standard now.
i don't know why, but i am rather disappointed with the merfolk
maybe i was expecting too much having seen the other reveal creatures, but a 2/1 for 2 that lets you draw a card isn't really that exciting
however the 5/5 for 4 and a creature is really really good
OMGWTFBBQ the Kithkin rock my world. Please let them also be in "Jelly"....
As for the Churrascaria... pfft. There's a cheaper one right near Shea Stadium (forget the name right now) that's equally awesome, and to the best of my recollection, is cheaper and allows sandals.
The Trio is the biggest limited bomb I've yet seen in the set. Yes, bigger than the planeswalkers. He approaches razormane masticore levels of obscenity.
The Adept is truly awesome. I hope every tribe gets one of these and that each is as good as this.
Faerie - 2/2 Flying for 1U
Giant - 5/5 Trample for 3R
Treefolk - 3/6 for 2G
Boggart - 2/2 "Sacrifice ~this~: Destroy target creature." for BB

"One skilled at battle takes a stand in the ground of no defeat
And so does not lose the enemy's defeat.
Therefore, the victorious military is first victorious and after that does battle.
The defeated military first does battle and after that seeks victory."
Silvergill Adept makes me single-handedly want to play Merrow. It's so good. The Kithkin is predictable, but a bomb in limited and will more than likely get some play in constructed. Go, go, Silvergill!
If he has flash, I'll be all over this guy It'd totally fit with the Faerie MO. Actually, they could be even more awesome with it; check this out:
Oona's Elite 1U
Creature - Faerie Wizard
Flying, Flash
Champion a Faerie
When ~ comes into play, you may return a Faerie you control to its owner's hand.
2/2
Basically, a 2/2 flying champ, or a Faerie-specific reusable Blink That'd be a bomb in my book.
The merfolk will be good in a mono-blue merfolk aggro... that's it.
Errrmmm... it's good in any deck with enough Merfolk.
And seeing as Merfolk are U/w, and this one only has one U in it, it certainly is quite good for any U/W Merfolk deck.
And it isn't limited to aggro, I don't think. If you were pursuing some other strategy that still required Merfolk, the fact that you get a cantrip is still quite nice. Since there's supposedly going to be a Merfolk that is similar to Tradewind Rider, a Merfolk-based U(/W) control deck could have potential. And I'm guessing it requires you to tap Merfolk, so you need to get some Merfolk out to use it. And while you're doing that, drawing cards sounds like a good idea.
Silvergill Adept is also a great champion target... The cantrip will make up for losing your champion creature if it dies, also the aforementioned blink tricks work. You can blink your champion to save it, Silvergill comes back and draws you a card, then gets championed again. You saved your champion and drew a card, sounds good to me!
The Trio is the biggest limited bomb I've yet seen in the set. Yes, bigger than the planeswalkers. He approaches razormane masticore levels of obscenity.
Really, his bombiness in limited is very much reduced by the conditionals. Having to have another kithkin in play (and not die in response to this guy) won't happen as much as you might like in most limited, i'd bet.
Wow, it looks like they finally figured out just how weak cards that depend on a lot of other cards with their creature type are and decided to actually make some constructed playable ones. Both these cards are sweet.

Remember people; "Champion a creature" means that you need to have a creature out in play FIRST before you can play it.
So when you see a 5/5 for 4, Remember that you also need to a play a creature before, that includes a mana cost just to play it.
It's more like a 5/5 for 4+X.
Not to nit-pik, but it actually says "Champion a Kithkin" which can be any Kithkin permanent (read: enchantment), not just a creature, according to the article.
Okay, so somebody explain to me what double strike does with first strikers and what it does on defense. Does the trio get as sick as I think with Battle Mastery on it?

Not sure what your asking here but First Strike doesn't help Double Strike at all.
If you were to cast Battle Mastery on this guy he would deal damage during the first strike phase and then during normal damage.
Theres no way to give something triple or quadruple strike even if you cast 4 battle masteries on one creature.
I'm gonan say that that elemental looks like a snal to me.
silvergill reminds me why i love blue
the trio reminds me why... aw... can't think of anything besides the awesomeness.
i'm gonna second someone before me and say that the trio and battle mastery are gonna be really good buddies.
Ok, so it's another unexciting champion creature. Yeah, it might see some play in Kithkin decks (it combines well with Harbingers, the "reveal or pay 3" creatures, anti-wrath effects, etc), but I'd definitely say it's the worst of the four non-changeling champions we've seen so far. The goblin and elf produce enough creatures to force mass removal on their own. The elemental can deal a proposterous amount of damage (and with a harbinger championed, can keep on doing it even if blocked).
Sure, it's decent. It's a 5/5 for 4 in white (unseen outside of Calciderm). It has 3 solid abilities that work well together. It can fend off an entire force on its own while still mounting an offense, meaning it is great with planeswalkers (hey, this might even make Ajani not completely unplayable). But unlike the other three, it just lacks the ability to force a wrath on its own and allow a quick comeback from a wrath (I guess the elemental isn't QUITE like that, but he's just so POWERful).

Both cards are good and will see play if their respected tribes are competitive.
On a barely related side note, has anyone else noted we've got 180 cards spoiled yet none of our official preview cards have been repeats of the spoiled cards? I feel by this time we're normally like "eh, we've seen that. It's nice to have the art but...". Maybe I'm just trying to make up some "wizards is the ones feeding us our info" conspiracy theory... But hey, maybe they figured if they can't beat us, they'd just regulate our info.
as an aside, dontcha guys think that nova hunter is already the elemental champion?
anyway, nice catch on the kithkin. combo this with the goldmeadow harrier from FS that is sure to appear in lorwyn as well, to make sure your kithkin dodges spot removal. also, having militia's pride in play is also a cool tactic to make sure you have something to champion as the trio hits play

But yeah, the Adept is darn good, and really darn good in U/W Blink. EDIT: given, of course, that you can run some merfolk in Blink.
We prob will still see a 1 drop merfolk but it won't be anything uber.
Feel free to bid on my cards here!

You both answered my question very well. I didn't think it allowed two rounds of first strike, but a boy can dream.
Still, you can block and kill 9 1/1s without dying (sans tricks) and swing for 10 with Battle Mastery attached. I'm happy with that.
