I dunno about that, man. Merchant of Secrets is the closest comparable card, and it costs more, is only a 1/1, and loses the Merfolk creature type.
A 2/1 that draws you a card when it comes into play would cost you 4 mana and probably not be such relevant creature types.
If it late in the game and you are low on cards in the hand and you do not have any merfolk in the hand, Slivergill being 4 mana will not matter when you need to draw a card. Slivergill is only good in a merfolk deck.

If you are low on cards while playing blue/merfolk you should consider a deck-rebuild.
alot of the merfolk, heck alot of the lowryn cards seem to be wizards. Voidmage Prodigy ? with silvergill, Sygg, summon the school.
The tradewind rider merfolk and the 1 drop land changer are likely wizards aswell. could possibly have a nice little merfolk/wizard control deck:rolleyes:
Both of these cards are fine, but not as good as most think at first. The merfolk is obviously a very good drop early in the game but suffers late game as the rest of the cycle (i.e. if you don't have another in your hand or you top decked it).
The kithkin looks amazing, but like Wildfire393 said, against control it's just a 5/5 with a drawback cip. Both the elf and the goblin are card advantage engines. On the other hand, a vigilant first striker that big will be a real problem in limited, since efficient removal for such a target is scarce in Lorwyn, especially if paired with green and pump spells.

The Merfolk card seems quite interesting, sure, it's a poor topdeck if you don't have Merfolk cards in your hand, but I'm sure it will be a 4-of in all Merfolk decks, wheteher they're viable or not for Constructed I don't know.
Thoughtweft Trio is a savage beating for Limited, for a bargain 4 mana and temporarily losing some small Kithkin Dork you get an almost impassable 5/5 first striker than can take down more than one creature at once and a 5/5 attacker at the same time thanks to vigilance. I definitely see this card as worth a try for Constructed, and here's hoping I get one of these (and some other playable Kithkins of course) at the prerelease.
I like both these cards but I'm still waiting to see more from both their respective tribes before I pass judgment like the merfolk champion creature, merfolk lord, and the kithkin lord.... those cards will tell how playable these tribes are compared to each other...
looks like in standard goblins and merfolk will both have 2 lords... if the 2nd merfolk lord is cheap and efficient then I could see merfolk being playable and I can't wait to see the champion merfolk.
It strikes me that r&d had to have playtested these as tribal decks against each other - that being the case the cycle cards - champion, tutors, reveal a card etc. might be up and down in terms of balance, but in each tribal deck might be okay. I am wondering how these decks might translate out of the block games. If the tribes are focussed enough will they see play as tribes in T2 - Goblins have owned T2 in the past so there is a precedent. I don't think we know yet but I hope so. And I hope it is not just the goblins, it would be great to see tribal variants across T2.

Sometimes "innovation" means "stealing another's secret before anyone else can."
Usually I see Vortho's and the flavor-lovers saying that they're going to make a deck for 'each guild,' or 'each tribe.'
For once, even as a strictly competative player, I feel compelled to test out a Merfolk deck, Kithkin deck, Boggart deck, Fairy deck, and maybe even an Elemental deck.

Anyone feeling the same way?
Yeah, I'm a strictly casual player and I'm loving this set, I plan to make decks of atleast the following:
Kithkin
Elemental
Merfolk
Treefolk
Elves
and maybe
Boggart and or Fairy
The only one that really isn't appealing to me at all is Giants. I think that each of the other tribes is viable on their own because of the spectrum of costs, even elementals who have some high-end beef (the incarnations at 6/6 for 6, etc.) have casting costs all the way down to 1. The giants mana curve ,on the other hand, it pretty bad.
Wow. Very nice cards. So...do you think that the 1cc Merfolk will be Merfolk of the Pearl Trident? I mean it would be everything that one could expect...right?
I do have a question though. I remember reading a long time ago that if enough non-firststrike creatures block a firststrike creature then it will kill him. I guess this is my question. How many creatures with power less than 5 can the Kithkin block without dying? I really don't remember how firststrike works. Example.
Opponent has 5 3/3 vanilla creatures that attack. I block with this Kithkin. All of them die and my Kithkin keeps on kicking. Would the same be true if my opponent had 100 3/3 vanilla creatures that are attacking?
No, it means that you can deal your 5 damage before they can deal their damage. You can only kill one 3/3, or you can kill 5 1/1.
(He can block 2 3/3, kill one and receive 3 damage from the other one, but still live)
At least Flores didn't have to preview Hamletback Giant. The Ferrett said the same thing about six times about the card to take up article space, knowing he's never going to put it into any multiplayer deck. Bad previews this season.
It's official: Go tribal or go home. These cards are good if and only if you play tribal. Welcome to the 8-deck set.
People said the EXACT same thing when it was revealed RAV had 10 guilds. In fact, I was one of those who thought that. I think it became QUITE clear that with the exception of Gruul and Boros... even decks that were primarily two colors weren't JUST playing guild cards.
Coldsnap, TS, PC, DIS are still in the format.
EDIT: besides, 8 deck T2 is still better than MIRRODIN T2!
As for Flores's preview card. I know it was said all over the boards that if the Neo-Duress card was real...that Flores would spoil it. Now that he revealed a Merfolk instead...where does that leave us for the supposed "Best" card in the set now? Hydro do you have any information? Nicolarre why don't you flip your friend upside down and threaten him to give you the details today rather than Saturday? This supposed card is driving me crazy.
Very well said, pandafarmer. I agree with you completely. It is hard to make predictions without knowing all the cards and every possibility... in other words... what your signature says

Celebrating 3 years of open-minded acceptance, indispensable help, great advice, and incalculably-creative deck-design... Thanks for all the magic!
While netdecking and testing VileHorror i thought about Biorhythm. Sure its really expensive, off-color and crappy but still you're always the one with creatures while playing VH. That made me think.
*****! That merfolk should be a Faerie! I wonder how the "reveal" faerie will be... Faeries need more love =/
And the kithkin is ok... If you play White Kithkin Weenie, you can have lots of tokens and champion one of them at your fourth turn for the finisher. Nice.

Thanks for posting those. It's impossoible to access the wizards website close to 9pm.
The Merfolk looks interesting... A good little card drawer for a merfolk deck.
The Kithkin looks like a great card for WW
Remember people; "Champion a creature" means that you need to have a creature out in play FIRST before you can play it.
So when you see a 5/5 for 4, Remember that you also need to a play a creature before, that includes a mana cost just to play it.
It's more like a 5/5 for 4+X.
that's true, but you also get two creatures for that cost (if your champion dies off you get your original kithkin back). I know that a 1/1 might not be all that much, especially late game, but it is better than not having a creature at all, plus, it will alow you to lay another one of these champions down.
As for the supporting Merfolk, we have an efficient Legendary guy that protects our investment for a cheap cost, and the aforementioned Tradewind Rider guy. Woe be to your opponents should WOTC print a constructed-worthy tribal Instant with the Merfolk subtype...
---
As for Thoughtweft Trio, what can I say... I had serious hopes on seeing some Calciderm action this season, and they just go and print a KITHKIN that shames even the mighty shrouded beast. This guy is likely to fill up the top of the curve of every aggro deck that can support it.
So far the Kithkin are only missing a couple of decent 2-drops to be viable and somewhat scary, and those slots allegedly belong to the Kithkin lord and one of Time Spiral's efficient 2-drops (and no, I don't mean Amrou Scout).
If you ask me, I'd say red becomes a much better splash alternative than green for Kithkin decks. You may lose Gaddock Teeg's protection, but in return you gain up to 8 Incinerates, Greater Gargadon and Cryoclasm on the side. Given their reliance on large numbers, Greater Gargadon becomes excellent post-*** attrition. Kithkin show zero built-in evasion at lower mana costs, so a little reach may be in order to wrap things up.

People hiss and grunt at Mark Rosewater for the state of the game. Few realize, though, that it is Aaron Forsythe who is directly responsible of the current state of affairs due to negligence as head of Magic R&D and a completely skewed view of the game as a whole.
So next time you want to make an avvy with Rosewater pissing on something, take a deep breath and consider pasting Forsythe's face there instead...

I am pretty sure the Merfolk Champion is Wanderwine Prophets, the one that lets you take extra turns.

so, it takes 4 3/3's to kill him, or 10 1/1's or 1 5/6..

Silvergill Adept is just the Court Hussar replacement Momentary Blink decks were looking for. With a Tradewind Rider-like merfolk hinted, U/W Blink is bound to have enough synnergistic Merfolk to support an early Adept.
He's hell on control, trades with early aggro threats, replaces itself and becomes a nifty Momentary Blink target later on. Better still, thanks to Familiar's Ruse, Venser, Shaper Savant and Cryptic Command, you get A LOT of draws out of a single merfolk!
