You do realize it does not prevent combat damage do you? It clearly states "spell or ability."

People hiss and grunt at Mark Rosewater for the state of the game. Few realize, though, that it is Aaron Forsythe who is directly responsible of the current state of affairs due to negligence as head of Magic R&D and a completely skewed view of the game as a whole.
So next time you want to make an avvy with Rosewater pissing on something, take a deep breath and consider pasting Forsythe's face there instead...
given that you did waste your turn 2, permission would suffer since his cheapest counterspells (delay, remove soul, familiar's trickery once lorwyn is out) would be 3cc and with spell snare would be rotating out of standard, there's no way to stop it with 1 mana... your turn 3 would be more or less a freebie. also, if your opponent doesn't have a 2nd 2cc (now at 3cc with the thorn), and there is a possibility that more people would play cryptic command over cancel, his 4 mana option would just be venser or mystic snake...
discard spells for MBC are also slowed down, but with thoughtseize, you'd be sure that the thorn is a prime target.
...and just a quick mention, the mere fact that card's like the thorn of amethyst exist might change how people build decks. control certainly might change its build...
Well.... U/W Control might resort to Mana Tithe, which would be enough to stop the turn 2 Thorn... it's not ideal, but it's better than the alternative.
Does Amethyst Thorn interact with Gaddock Teeg like I want it to?
No. At least, not if the way you want it to is "the combination of the two would stop 3 cmc spells from being played as well". Thorn of Amethyst increases the TOTAL cost of the spell. Gaddock Teeg only cares about the CONVERTED mana cost of the spell, which is simply the printed mana cost, with all of the colored mana symbols turned into "1"s, and then totalled up. Increasing or decreasing the total cost someone has to pay for a spell does NOT affect its converted mana cost.
Now, what both Teeg and the Thorn do is hinder decks that rely on non-creature spells, and do so starting turn two. The combination of the two can make the life of any deck based off of primarily non-creature spells fairly miserable. However, they do not "combo".

The thorn does cause serious problems for Control in T2 as well as in older formats I think. I have been working on a B/u Control deck based around Liliana Vess, and I am very worried about Thorn causing me serious problems. The fact is, with one out it is hindering; two out is probably game over for a control deck. Tendrils for 6? Careful Consideration for 6? No thanks.

well... i thought of that card, but you said it yourself and even i have to agree... it's not really not that ideal as it is quite dead late in the game... but it would hurt try it out as a replacement to spell snare... not really that strong but i'll take what we're given...
as i said, thorn would be a 4-of in most aggro decks (not necessarily all in main), so control would all be packing their thoughtseizes (and maybe mana tithes)...

Because there are so many things that get in the way of a 6/6 flyer.
Thanks to Avatar for the rockin' Sig and Avvy!
