Tribal Enchantment - Elf
Whenever another nontoken Elf is put into your graveyard from play, you may put a 1/1 green Elf Warrior creature token into play.
They state in the podcast that its one of the good anti-Damnation/Wrath cards that they tried to put in the set to make creature decks stronger against anti creature strategies.
Seems good, but not necessarily a staple. Possibly broken with Perfect Imperialist(s), simply because of the pump ettect. Elves do have to be killable somehow...
Hey, is there anyone else on the forums going to Rice University in Houston? We could ALWAYS use more people in our Magic games. PM me if you want to play sometime
What a disaster. This shouldn't be a Tribal, nor should it be an Elf. It's a frickin' enchantment, fair and square. And check out the wording, they had to make it say "whenever ANOTHER elf..." so that it didn't trigger itself going to the graveyard. What a mess. Gross.
And it's not like we needed a replacement when Golgari Germination rotates out.

I think it makes an interesting analogue to Kithkin Pride...but frankly, Kithkin Pride is just better.
Although this does help Elf decks recover from Wrath effects, the fact that it triggers off Elves going to the graveyard kind of sucks.
Well to be honest, I used to use Germination in a Husk deck before the Bunrei versions became popular. There were times I had an absolutely HUGE husk thanks to that card (and I would have killed to have it one mana cheaper). I even trampled OVER a DSC once to kill someone. I could see it fit quite nicely in with a Husk deck now... purhaps not a good one, but might raise some eyebrows. love it!
Like others, my first thought when I saw this was of Golgari Germination. It probably says something about how playable this card will be that I had to look up Golgari Germination to remember exactly what it does. Essentially, you're saving and losing the ability to get tokens from non-Elves. Of course, the difference between 2 and 3 mana is generally quite significant, plus you get the benefit of the card being an Elf itself.
I suppose you can get tokens from non-creatures, but as far as I know there have yet to be revealed any non-creature permanents with the Elf subtype or Changeling outside of this card.
Golgari Germination obviously wasn't that hot in Ravnica, but it also didn't really fit into a lot of decks. The environment here is different. Still, I doubt an aggro deck (especially one with Elves) would want to spend its second turn playing an enchantment that has no immediate effect.
Edit: I hope the presence of the Warrior type on the tokens won't encourage speculation about Morningtide being class-based.
I'm surprised they printed this. It's not really all that useful in standard, or for beat down strategies except maybe as a board card, but its very useful in elf-based combo decks, where you've got the Glimpse/Altar/Fecundity engine working for a massive storm count. The easier mana and elf searchability are key improvements over golgari germination for that sort of deck.
EDIT: also, the fact that the tokens have type: elf can matter to those decks sometimes. However, this probably isn't enough to elevate those decks to competitive status, but its worth keeping half an eye on.
On second thought, maybe there's some casual combo deck that could abuse this somehow, although it won't be one of mine, as few of my elf decks use any black, and none of them combo off "to the graveyard" trigs.
1-drop on turn 1. 2-drop on turn 2. Drop this on turn 3 along with a second 1-drop elf, in time to save your army from Wrath. I'd hit it.

I think this is awesome in limited if you choose to play Elves. Every one that dies before your opponent deals with this enchantment brings a token into play. If they have any sac/reanimate tool even better. (Yes, I realize Goblins have that and Elves might not have any at all).
As it is worded I think it can trigger with Elf sorcery and instants, and even cards going from hand, library to grave. That will make it a broken enchant, and a 4of in all elf decks.
True... I thought of that too. Purhaps there is a Elf/Boggart black combo deck in the shadows? We still have plenty of cards not spoiled yet! I think the best possibility would be Husk abuse at the moment. Heck, I used Llanowar Elves in my build...

It only triggers if something goes to the graveyard from play, so permanents only.

Well, this continues to flesh out the two mana tribal enchantment cycle. It's uncommon, and it's 1B, and it's tribal. That's good enough to make it a part of a cycle in my mind. It's an analogue to the merfolk enchantment that untaps all merfolk, and the kithkin thingie that makes kithkin tokens for each attacker. Giants have that protection to the highest cost thing (which I love) but that's rare I think.
As it is worded I think it can trigger with Elf sorcery and instants, and even cards going from hand, library to grave. That will make it a broken enchant, and a 4of in all elf decks.
Sorceries and instants are *RARELY* in play.
Funny, I was just thinking had they designed it right, it would have triggered off of elf tribal enchantments and sorceries, elf CARDS, and thus not needed the non-token part... since tokens aren't cards.
I assume Wizards didn't want to enable some sort of Dredge-like strategy involving lots of self-mill to create massive numbers of elf tokens. Then again, this doesn't sound particularly powerful compared to some of the other combo decks in the format.
I wonder if this is part of a two-mana tribal enchantment cycle, or if it's just a coincidence. Does anyone else find it strange we only have 187/301 cards the Friday of prerelease weekend? I've been following the spoilers here since Ravnica or so, and, if I recall, at least 90% of the set would be spoiled by now.

i agree that husk would be a good way to abuse this enchantment. 1 elf (non-token of course) for +4/+4 to the husk is not so bad...

2 mana is a huge huge deal compared to 3 so don't underestimate that factor.
Feel free to bid on my cards here!
