well the bloodwitches' Pro White makes it powerful, it survives most good spot removal out atm (O ring, journey, path etc) and can essentially nullify a BSA by itself. AP is IMO a great card, however the reliance of getting your own removal out is a big downside, something alot of previous pages worth of commentors have said. Still, I'd run it.
Funny story, second game against Cruel control, my friend played Thought hemorrhage twice in a row, stripping my deck of removal i got destroyed my 3 cruels in a row down the track cause AP couldn't die

Outside of PtE and BSA, why is bloodwitch really that great unless you're playing vamps? And if you're playing vamps, why wouldn't you want AP too?
The bloodwitch without a nocturnus sux against sphynx, which all the blue fanboys will be rocking with their mindsculptor shenanigans, and you know there's going to be a lot of them now that blue sux alot less.
I don't see it really going below $25, since that's where people got into them. It's mythic in a small set so not alot of them will be cracked by players and it's straight forward bash face is simple enough to grasp even by newer players so I'm not convinced alot of them will trade hands. Locally, nobody seems to want to trade theirs. I also think shops will only open so many cases since the money cards are mostly mythic and the cracking density isn't all that favorable.
Also... what will oppose it when Lights comes, and BSA, Broodmate, PtE, etc go away?
okay. easy example, imagine BSA and AP on the same battlefield. We'll rate them as the best two cards out, but the reason it will never get high in price is because of the reigning girl herself. It's apparent lack of cost is her pro AP ability. but, once lights comes in and the cards go away, then like you say, AP should become better.
But Lights will also weaken AP.
Imagine, your running your AP in a deck, with vamps and such, after shards is gone.
How will you remove it? how will you win the game from there? assuming of course you saved your third turn tempo advantage god, Gatekeeper, to kill it off? what happens if they cause you to discard it? What happens if they counter it? it is a card that relies on your deck to either build around or have some form of tolerance for its drawbacks with.
Sorry to sound pessimistic, but the only way to run it at the moment is /with/ all the removal shards has given us ala terminate, bone splinters, flesh bag etc. So the conversation is moot to say that /just/ because it has the same "weaknesses" of BSA that it is just as good, same with saying that /just/ because JwarJwar has shroud and BSA doesn't that you can mock a valid point. Baneslayer is good because you play it in an aggro deck that forces them to remove your threats or die, then dropping it and winning, blazing past EVERY finisher in standard that i can think of (Broodmate, Abyssal, Karrthus, and the Sphinx)
And don't believe that because i am saying this i dislike AP, no far from it i an Playtesting him as we speak, i love the card down to his scary scowl to his awesome flavor text, and i definitely seeing him get some play in the future.
Now, to answer your previous post, Magic is a game of Matchups. Rock scissors paper, etc. So, to imagine it as a simple "bloodwitch is worse" scenario is very counter productive. you have to imagine it as a full complex level. I dont know if you play tourneys or not, and i assume you do, but in those situations Bloodwitch is situationally better, whilst AP is in others. Bloodwitch degates the two best spells out for the biggest deck around other than jund ATM, which is Naya. AP, on the other hand, is both path-able and BSA neutralised. I mean, would you swing into a BSA with it? now, imagine a different Matchup aka the Mirror, which you seemed to regard as the way to iew things. Bloodwitch would lose, painfully. Simple. Its more expensive, weaker and has abilites that won't really help it. Now imagine Cruel VS both. AP punches through Sphinx whilst being cheap enough to possibly avoid a stable lockdown of counter.
The point i am making is thus: AP is a good card, but so is Malakir Bloodwitch. Sphinx is too, and BSA is as well. And AP has a bad drawback. There, a good valid statement. Easy, no?
Edit: and my goodness that is the longest rant i have ever had, text based or not

Tanfew: I don't disagree with anything you said. My disagreement was with Nof's assertion that because of PtE and BSA, AP was crap, and that evasion from 2 cards makes the only difference that matters. Bloodwitch is good. She's been in my Jund SB since prerelease, but she is situational outside of a vamp deck as you say, and not MB.
But I think AP is MB material. I'm not worried about ways to remove AP. I don't think there's ever been a set where WotC hasn't put in black kills, because that's what black does and there's never been a shortage of black kills. Just like green will always get fatties and ways to shoot/kill fliers, red will always get burn, etc. Consequently, if you're playing black, you're playing removal, and if you play with any other color, there's going to be some way destroy/exile it.
AP wont win by itself, but it will demand an answer or you probably win, and it's cheap. Cheap huge threats were pretty good last time I checked.
What I'd like to know is if people still think the drawback is relevant. I can see not thinking the card is great if you think that the creature itself is not all that special (e.g. if you think you'd use Malakir Bloodwitch in that slot)...
Is that what the debate is? Whether 6/6 Flying Trample for 4 is better than 4/4 Flying Pro-White opponent loses ~2 life and you gain ~2 life, and whether decks that can run one of those guys maindeck actually exist?
I cannot wait for someone to beat me down to -13 with it, then, when they attempt to sac it, I play regenerate
Then I swing for their remaining 2 next turn.
That doesn't work. Also, regenerate is so incredibly bad that running even one in your deck siphons all the power out of the rest of your cards. It might actually be better at taking lives than it is at saving them.
hmm, new idea, Black/White weenie-to-face deck. Abyssal filling in top spot with Rangers, 4 DoD's, 4 Journeys, 4 O rings, 4 Path, Scullers, Vanguard, Death's Shadow even(for the lols). Hmmm, me thinking big nowe. oh nd of course BSA's

This card did very well for me last night, if nothing else because he ate their removal turn three, leaving a turn four baneslayer free to do her thing. And at 11 removal spells, I had no problem getting rid of him when I had to.

Heh - this is my thought. I played some "friendly" games last night and every time he hit the table and smashed them for 6 more than one turn - they scooped. And each and every time they'd ask "What do you have to get rid of him?" and I'd show them one of 11 different removal/sacrifice outlets.
They pretty much HAVE to deal with him like the Angel - or they lose. Me holding back one removal spell is nothing in the scope of winning me the game.
I got a nice laugh at FNM recently at a few people scooping the moment AP swung at them to put them to negative. Especially the times that the AP player didn't actually have removal in his hand yet. I understand that a losing position is a losing position, but I would never concede till its absolutely lost.

Unless it's game one\two and you only have 20 minutes left. There are times when I would like to fight it out, but in the interest of time, we have to move on.
AMAZING CARD! I would play this in almost any black deck. If you have a Platinum Angel, you can play both. They'll put your life total down to the negatives, then you play Death's shadow. Play Lifelink on the shadow, Put their life total down to the negatives, Terminate the persecutor, and you win. I'm sure there's an easier combo, but I was just saying one that I think is pretty cool.
I had pre-ordered a playset from StarCityGames for $20 per card, $80 playset. Luckily, I got in before the price hit $30 per. I hadn't received the items yet so I went to their website only to find that my order had been canceled and fully refunded. I still don't know why this happened, currently waiting on a reply from them. So, I don't have the Persecutors... Yet.
Now I am seeing the price drop on ebay to where I have seen playsets selling for $70. I expect this downward trend to continue.
Now, I really like this card. Actually, I really love it. I should add to that statement that I am an admitted Timmy who really gets off on big fatties that not many other people would go ga-ga over. I also have playsets of all comparable suicide black fatties (ie Juzam Djinn, Grinning Demon, Plague Sliver, Phyrexian Negator) and I enjoy playing those things in Legacy and Casual suicide black decks.
I'd been trying and trying to work Abyssal Persecutor into a deck in a variety of formats and all I could come up with was a Standard White-Black deck that used various sac abilities with Day of Judgment, O-Ring, and Path to be there to possibly help remove this guy. Honestly, I don't think the deck is very good and if I'm thinking that the deck isn't very good it isn't.
So here is what I am thinking about this card now. It is going to be comparable to Nissa Revane in that it will find a Standard deck to go in. Yes, I believe it will find A STANDARD DECK, as in ONE STANDARD DECK! This card is not anything like Baneslayer where it was an auto include in any deck running white. Naya, Bant, various Control builds, Boros, even White Weenie play this guy. Hell, I've even seen Jund and Vampire decks that "splash" white to play this guy.
Abyssal Persecutor isn't a card that can be put into any black deck or any deck running black. Abyssal Persecutor, much like Nissa Revane, has to have a deck built around it and that is a significant drawback. As such, I expect that this card's price will lower out to somewhere between $10 and $15 a card. I'm not going to go off like some are and claim that this is a dollar bin rare or even a $5 rare, it's clearly not. However, it clearly is not Baneslayer, it clearly is not a $30 card, and I'm beginning to believe that it isn't even a $20 card.
I knew how good Baneslayer was the FNM after M10 was released. I got beat by it in a few games. My response was to quickly pick up a playset for $80, $20 per card. Even though I haven't played the Angel in every deck I'm still glad I bought it when I did. Abyssal Persecutor on the other hand... I haven't seen it played in any deck, not even one. Everyone I talk to who thinks this card is good or great has yet to play it in a competetive deck.
If this guy dealt 1, 2, 3, maybe even 4 damage to it's controller each upkeep, rather than having the "you can't win" clause, he'd be going into just about any deck running black. That "you can't win" clause, on the other hand, is just too risky for him to be played in many serious decks.
Frankly, I'm glad that StarCity cancelled my order at $20 a card. Don't get me wrong, I still really, REALLY want a playset of this guy. However, I will be patient and wait it out until I can win a playset on ebay for somewhere between $40 and $60.
I want this card to be good. I want this card to be great. Reality is saying that this card won't live up to it's initial hype.
I find that I want to put 2-4 of abyssal persecutor in every deck that can support him (with black and self removal)... such as:
vampires run 2
jund run 3
black/white (kind of like what you said) run 4
he works awesome with basilisk collar (run 2 of these when you play AP)
the black/white deck: lots of removal, so you can hold off fast decks like elves, jund, allies, RDW, etc. then use baneslayers and AP as your main strike force, and even 2 abdomition angel (remove opponent's threats or your AP when you get opponent to 0). Seems really powerful in testing so far and only has trouble with a good grixis control deck (but that deck has problems against the speedy decks)
the thing with AP's price- initially it was $25-30 b/c of the hype and everyone wanted 4 or more, but as the market saturates with large supply the price will drop. But this card is a lot better then juzam djinn and the other big black creatures with drawbacks.. the flying+trample and being 6/6 is huge. just wrath of god or day of judgment (depending on format) when you are done beating down the opponent. Your opponent has to remove AP asap or they will lose; that alone makes him better then baneslayer (b/c baneslayer costs 5). Overall I am not sure if AP or baneslayer is better; baneslayer has held up through the test of time, we'll have to wait and see about AP. I think he'll be just fine, and actually regain his $25-30 for the next few years (and only go up after that.. as he is long out of print and remains playable in older formats).
Similar thoughts on Jace the Mind Sculptor- very good in a multitude of formats, however I am finding blue is still too slow and control isn't powerful enough against the aggressive meta. He may drop down to $30 range for awhile until solid decks find a good use for him. He is very, very, very good though (brainstorm for free every turn is insane!.. and that's just one ability)

Hey there do you mind sharing your decklist for the b/w deck? I'm kinda interested in it since you claim that it has good matchups against nearly half of the meta in T2 now. I'm planning on building my own b/w deck and would like to have your deck as a reference.

Hey there do you mind sharing your decklist for the b/w deck? I'm kinda interested in it since you claim that it has good matchups against nearly half of the meta in T2 now. I'm planning on building my own b/w deck and would like to have your deck as a reference.
Thanks a bunch
Yeah, same PM me it too sounds awesome xD. Maybe it could become a serious contender this coming season
I collect Fallen Angels.
