It's barely any different than the dragon deck player waiting until the EOT phase of the knight player to cast Bogardan Hellkite to hit 5 to the face and then swing for 5 flying on his turn. It's a ☺☺☺☺ty excuse for a ☺☺☺☺ty product.
Exactly. Hunted Dragon and Bogardan Hellkite are in the same boat when it comes to Life Totals.
And, to reiterate, the Dragon deck is horrible without Black. Literally every piece of removal is burn (thematic, but it leaves out that Dragons are highly magical creatures, sometimes spellcasters in their own right).
I'm not asking for a competitive DD. I'm asking for a DD that's actually worth the $20 I spend. Thunder Dragon isn't played outside of EDH and KotR does not make up for the cost of the deck. The Knight deck is the only part of this DD that's actually decently built. The Dragon deck is just a bunch of jank thrown together because it's "thematic" (seriously, who the **** thought Cinder Wall and Bogardan Rager are "Dragonic" in theme?).
I wouldn't mind the most refined W White Weenie deck Vs Dragon Reanimator deck.

The four Myr get to work on monitoring the strange statue of a weeping woman. This goes on for several thousand years.
The Weeping Angel:"Well they have to mess up eventually or blink right? Right?"
I also like how he justifies that it's a risky card and usually one that kills the dragon player because then he has 3 2/2 knights. If it's that big of a deal for the dragon deck to deal with 2/2 knights then why are you putting Knight Exemplar in the knight deck to pump and give indestructibility? The dragon deck is absolute jank.
Nothing in this game is degenerate or completely dominant. They haven't banned anything in standard in a long, long time. Hell they should have banned affinity right away, but they didn't until boxed sales collapsed too. Hasbro had to come in and fire people.
I'll enjoy watching all the whiners eat crow monday.
This one sentence sums up my thoughts on Chris Millar's article perfectly. That may be the only time I've read a Magic article that convinced me the author is unqualified to do his job. It would be one thing if he was feeling his way through it and didn't quite get it right, but he apparently considered doing it exactly right and then decided he'd rather not. That's really awful.

Thanks for posting that, Perrault. Millar's reasoning makes a lot of sense. If you consider the play styles of both decks, Hunted Dragon really does give a lot of advantage to the knights side except in the one very particular scenario he described.

There are more ways for the knight deck to recover from the Hellkite than for the dragons deck to recover from a Hunted Dragon summoning gone awry, no?

Still say it needs to be W/ Knights VS R/ Dragon Reanimator.

That would've been really cool, I agree. Look, I was one of this set's earliest detractors; I still hate the Reynolds KoR, I would've liked to have seen different selections for cards featuring new art, I would've liked better flavour and I would've liked to have seen some of the crappy cards in both decks replaced by better cards or additional copies of the more useful cards.
Having said that, I recognize that the designers' goal first and foremost was to make a fun product that could draw new players into Magic or expose casual players to cards they may never have seen before, while also giving them a few popular and valuable cards to sweeten the deal. They weren't looking at the best spells at each casting cost when determining which supporting cards to include; they were likely looking for cards that accomplished certain criteria that were also obscure.
The positive playtesting feedback leads me to believe Wizards has made a decent casual product. Of course, Mr. Stark may have purposely left out negative feedback (I have my doubts that Wizard would be so gracious with their next products if he wasn't promoting them in a positive light) but the individuals in the actual video seemed pretty genuine with their thoughts. It's a far cry from the vitriol posted in here.

So let me get this straight Chris Millar...Knight Exemplar is a little to strong in the knight deck and makes a flavorful card that deserved to be in the dragon deck useless unless your opponent is in a very specific situation...SO YOU KEEP THE PROBLEM CARD!?!?!?!
Was removing exemplar and/or adding decent burn even a remote thought in your head?
I get DD's and me and my cousin each play one for a little and then switch to the other deck.We always have a blast when we play them and the decks have been balanced, but the dragons pretty much seem like its going to be absolute hell to play and have fun with.

WOut of the ground,I rise to grace...W BAfter the lights go out on you, after your worthless life is through. I will remember how you scream...B
The Wizards article today had some excellent closeups of Silver Knight and Seething Song. I love the detail on the Knight's shield. The new art for Punishing Fire is good, but generic. I can think of a dozen other burn spells it would make sense with. I don't know what happened with Loxodon Warhammer. It has such an unfinished look, like the background is still being sketched out.
I just knew that article would make some people complain even more. It's kind of amusing actually. And I'm not normally amused by that kind of thing.
I still think the Dragon deck looks really neat. Looking forward to getting it eventually...(and I'm glad it's a Red deck. Bladewing the Risen is a horrible, terrible representation of what Dragon's really are, so I'm glad he decided against it...)
There is a list of problems i have with this duel deck
- why only basics in dragon deck
- why give protection against color against a mono deck
- why promote kotr to mythic status
- why mono red vs duel colors
- why lack of things like crucible of fire that gives +3/+3 to all dragons
- why do knights have an "APE" making card. Treetop Village
- why is Bogardan Hellkite the best mythic dragon for the deck
- why have Temporary Insanity when there are better cheaper quick take over cards
- why have a dragon eat goblins when there are barely enough goblins to eat
- why Spitting Earth and Seismic Strike in the same deck
-why no Wilt-Leaf Liege for a supposed green white deck.
-why no mana ramp for a deck that seriously needs it (talking about the dragon one seething song doesn;t count)
- why Skirk Prospector when surely all ur goblins will be dead from protecting u early game
Im sure these problems aren;t that bad and any good designer would not have them in the deck
I know im quoting myself the reason is this was writen before his answer article
I think he managed to answer only 1 of my questions reasonable
Want to see other duel decks I made ? Check out my Blog ! Feel free to post advice or give topics for me to make duel decks out of. Check out the Theros Block Planeswalker Theme Duel Decks Elspeth, Xenagos, Ashok, Kiora, Ajani
I think i'm retracting my support of this duel deck after reading through that article, I may spend a few dollars more but I think i'm more likely just going to snag the singles for this one.
From the way he described it he was building the decks I wanted to see to begin with, B/R dragons could have been so much better than this pile of jank.
Though I completely agree with the lack of Hunted Dragon, terrible idea to feed the other side tokens of the appropriate type for their deck.
@ Everyone: Please make sure to read the entire article for their reasoning. I merely posted the part about the reasoning for Hunted Dragon as someone indirectly asked for it.

Out of the blackness and stench of the engulfing swamp emerged a shimmering figure. Only the splattered armor and ichor-stained sword hinted at the unfathomable evil the knight had just laid waste.
I thought that he did indirectly answer that. In the article, it talked about a Mountain subtheme going on. It started with Fire Dragon, but that was killed off, but the other stuff still remains there.
why promote kotr to mythic status
He did answer that.
Quote from Article »
In the end, we promoted Knight of the Reliquary because it's a cool card, it provides interesting game play and deck building options, and it's also very powerful and sees play in a number of competitive Constructed formats. Adding green opens up the door to some other cool Knight cards (if my days writing House of Cards are any indication, Juniper Order Ranger is popular with certain casuals) and gave us access to more flyer-hate options like Spidersilk Armor. So while Knight of the Reliquary is not a "true" mythic rare, it's not Ethersworn Adjudicator either.
- why lack of things like crucible of fire that gives +3/+3 to all dragons
Didn't he answer that with the whole 'rares-being-firebreathing-dragons' bit?
- why mono red vs duel colors
Mono-red: Dragons are the embodiment of red mana. He said this.
Dual: "Adding green opens up the door to some other cool Knight cards (if my days writing House of Cards are any indication, Juniper Order Ranger is popular with certain casuals) and gave us access to more flyer-hate options like Spidersilk Armor. "
why have Temporary Insanity when there are better cheaper quick take over cards
"Temporary Insanity is another example of a multi-purpose card whose value will fluctuate from game to game. (Pro Tip: You can use it to steal a guy to block Silver Knight.)"
The other 'cheaper' ones are sorceries, making that doesn't work.
Those are his answers. Here are some of mine that fit, imo.
- why give protection against color against a mono deck
Once you get a dragon out, the 2/2 won't be doing much. Sure, it can make some surprising moves (which is what it's supposed to), but it doesn't dominate, compared to, say a 5/5 with pro red, or, even a 1/1 pro red with flying.
- why is Bogardan Hellkite the best mythic dragon for the deck
It's the only mono-red mythic dragon.
- why have a dragon eat goblins when there are barely enough goblins to eat
Fits in with the theme. Also, 9 goblins are still a good number.
- why Spitting Earth and Seismic Strike in the same deck
Change gameplay up. There will be times you need one over the other and all that. The V.
-why no mana ramp for a deck that seriously needs it (talking about the dragon one seething song doesn;t count)
Did you read the deck list? Skirk Prospector, Seething Song, and Armillary Sphere are all there. I don't see a reason to 'not count' Seething Song, either, since that's red's form of ramping.
- why Skirk Prospector when surely all ur goblins will be dead from protecting u early game
Because you can use the ones that aren't dead to get out a dragon. Simple, no?
They could have just as easily promoted Dragon Tyrant (hey, fits the firebreathing theme!) to Mythic for this deck instead of giving us Bogardan Hellkite yet again. Ah well, another time.
EDIT: Come to think of it, I don't like Kilnmouth Dragon here, either. It works in the Archenemy deck, but when are you ever going to have it CIP with any counters in this deck? So that's two slots they could have used to reprint other dragons that needed it.
Dragon Tyrant would have actually balanced things out better than some of the other dragons in there. Whats that Knight Deck? Down to 12 life or less you say? Sucks to be you.
The impression I get from the Dragon deck is it's meant to lose more often than win. As the classic tales that feature knights and dragons; the knights usually tend to slay the dragons. Then the knight(s) save the day with some sort of reward waiting for them/him. Everyone lives happily ever after, except the dragons.
Bogardan Hellkite fits in the deck more than the Tyrant. It's slightly easier to cast, can come in at the end of opponent's turn, and gets rid of multiple threats when it resolves.
I'll still probably be adding Tyrant to create my own version of this deck.
I thought that he did indirectly answer that. In the article, it talked about a Mountain subtheme going on. It started with Fire Dragon, but that was killed off, but the other stuff still remains there.
So why didn;t they put the card in if they were going for 24 basic mountains? wouldn;t that be perfect? but like he says its mana cost is to high because of nearly no ramp. Or on the other hand why didn;t they get rid of the other stuff and put better things in
Didn't he answer that with the whole 'rares-being-firebreathing-dragons' bit?

Did you read the deck list? Skirk Prospector, Seething Song, and Armillary Sphere are all there. I don't see a reason to 'not count' Seething Song, either, since that's red's form of ramping.
Skirk Prospector goblins die protecting you from the knights coming out turn 1 2 and 3 , seething song is 1 time so a dragon on turn 6 which dies to removal and then armillary isn;t ramp cause it puts cards into ur hand no the battefield so u only have 1 card that can make a dragon appear before lvl 6.
Want to see other duel decks I made ? Check out my Blog ! Feel free to post advice or give topics for me to make duel decks out of. Check out the Theros Block Planeswalker Theme Duel Decks Elspeth, Xenagos, Ashok, Kiora, Ajani

Because it costs too much during testing. Simple as that. They don't want it to be a pure ramp deck that just gets a dragon out asap, then win. They want it to be a battle simulator type thing.
On contradiction aren;t knights the embodyment of white mana see knight exmplar. "Adding blue or black opens up the door to some other cool Knight cards " i mean dragon cards
Yeah, yeah. Just going by what he said. It would have been nice for WvR, but, hey, some things aren't perfect. Though, there is the point that firebreathing wants all red, while Knights are just more restrictive in cost, making them able to reach out a bit.
Grab the Reins doesn't untap. Disharmony can ONLY be used in one situation. Remember the V. They want things to be as open and as many possible game states as possible. Temporary Insanity is PERFECT for that. It can be used 'early' to steal an attacker to block, creating CA, it can be used for an extra attacker, and multiple other things, while also being able to scale late game.
So a silverknight with luxodin warhammer and spidersilk armor would not happen in this deck? and only 2 ways to get rid of said guy
Right, but that requires build up, which is exactly what they want, rather than just something that you plop down and win. Requiring extra cards is a good thing, since it makes you hope you draw X card.
Yet Wizard promotes and demotes cards rarity at will what about dragon Tyrant? as mythic. Or Kargan Dragonlord not a dragon but still dragon Dragonmaster Outcast its not a dragon but still a dragon also why not Dragonstorm Im sorry if Miss KOTR is a mythic then surely they can promote a dragon to mythic . Tyrant probably wasn't chosen because the cost, along with stealing red mana from other firebreathers. Imo, it would have been cooler, but, there is still some reasoning there.
Will you ever get all 9 out ? With no added card advantage
You don't need all 9 out though. Additionally, Dragon Fodder lets you create 2, getting more bang with Goblin-breather and Prospector. Again, they want games to be different each time you play, which comes at a cost of reducing consistency. If you had a bunch of goblins, even if they were different, it'd lead to goblin ramp each time (or something similar).
Will agree with you there still feels redudant :/
Of course. But, it's not necessarily a bad thing, since it does change stuff up every few games.
You don't have to block, you know. You play the goblins, getting rid of unneeded ones, while taking some damage. Then, on turn 4-5-6, you sac your surviving ones for a dragon.
Seething Song may be a one-time thing, but it's still there. Not really any reason to ignore it.
Sphere isn't true ramp, but it does allow you to consistently (heh) get lands on all turns, rather than have landless turns.
Honestly doesn;t the fact of having to answer questions regarding the duel deck show its flawed nature?
Not quite. Look at the hunted dragon problem. People thought it was stupid that they didn't include it, but, if they did include it, the decks would be less fun. Sure, some people see it as a 'mistake', but, the designers of the DD knew that it wouldn't be fun, compared to people that haven't played with the decks making judgments off the top of their head.
There will always be questions about everything. Is a MtG set flawed because someone doesn't understand a question? Is a card flawed if someone asks why it exists, when it wasn't designed for them? etc. Just because some people don't 'get' something doesn't inherently make it flawed. Even more so with this, because people are expecting something that they would make, and something that they would enjoy, while not really caring about what others would enjoy, as well. It's a lose-lose situation, because Wizards will try to appease as many people as possible, meaning it won't be 'perfect' in everyone's eyes, but only decent/good in a lot.

Hunted Dragon just embodies this theme so perfectly, I don't know if I care that it made the decks less fun. If it is such a huge deal then maybe they should still have included it as a 61st card or something. Because of the people who buy this product, or think about buying this product, only a small fraction of them will have seen the explanation on the website. The rest are just going to look at it and go "Huh? Why no Hunted Dragon? That's dumb".

Because it costs too much during testing. Simple as that. They don't want it to be a pure ramp deck that just gets a dragon out asap, then win. They want it to be a battle simulator type thing.
Right, but that requires build up, which is exactly what they want, rather than just something that you plop down and win. Requiring extra cards is a good thing, since it makes you hope you draw X card.
Tyrant probably wasn't chosen because the cost, along with stealing red mana from other firebreathers. Imo, it would have been cooler, but, there is still some reasoning there.
Of course. But, it's not necessarily a bad thing, since it does change stuff up every few games.
