I played 3 games with KvD yesterday and found the decks were much more competitive than I expected - the Dragons took 2 out of 3. Like any Duel Deck set, it's possible for one deck to play a threat that's almost impossible for the other to answer (like Silver Knight). But the Knights lack any real finishers, and the Dragon deck takes advantage of this with a lot of flexible burn spells/abilities like Cone of Flame and Jaws of Stone that will 2-for-1 or 3-for-1 the Knights.
Compared to the other Duel Decks, KvD is pretty simple mechanically. But it's not as hopelessly unbalanced as it appears to be.
hmmm lets see judging by ur discription i would say ur opponent had a very unlucky draws. ur discribing cards that have huge mana costs i find it suprising that you could play them and ur opponent had no answers to those cards. flexible? Cone of Flame Jaws of Stone seem more like huge cmc cards

Jaws is 6, which is hard to make, Cone is 5, which is not so hard with 24 Mountains, 2 Armillary Spheres, and a Seething Song. But the point is not so much that those cards are quick to play, but that they're going to gain you card advantage when you do. The Dragons have cheaper burn as well (Breath of Darigaaz at 4, Seismic Strike at 3, and Spitting Earth and Punishing Fire at 2). The Knights have a little bit of damage prevention, but not nearly enough to match burn spells one for one - and if they do use it, they're tying up mana instead of summoning more Knights, which gives the Dragons more time to get their mana online. Certainly the Knights are going to get some hits in early on, but their deck isn't so explosive that getting to 5 Mountains is especially difficult.
Anyway, I'm just sharing my initial experiences actually playing the decks, since it seems like most other folks are just trashing them based on the decklists. Duel Decks are so inconsistent that 3 games don't tell you an awful lot. But I went in expecting the Dragons to get blown out every game, and that definitely didn't happen.
3rd game: Got some dragons out (with the help of Seething Song). Knights deck got too many lands. Best she could do was get an ape from Treetop Village and gave it a Griffin Guide aura. We ruled that the aura stays attached even though the "creature" becomes a land after every turn; not sure if that was correct. Anyway, other than that, she couldn't get much going (I burned anything else she put in play) and after I got a couple of dragons in play (Thunder and Mordant - which she hit with Reciprocate... AGAIN), it didn't take long to win.
4th game, I typed as we played (last time we'll do this, as she didn't appreciate the time it took): She played Caravan Escort on turn 1. I played Dragon Fodder on turn 2, and she played Knotvine Paladin. I played Armillary Sphere on turn 3 (nothing else to play). She played a Grasslands, then leveled up Caravan Escort to a 2/2 and swung with everything for 4. I blocked with both Goblin tokens (destroyed). On turn 4, I played a Dragon Whelp; she played a Steward of Valeron. Turn 5, I played a Skirk Prospector and kept 4 untapped mountains. She tapped her Valeron for G and casted Skyhunter Patrol, then swung with the Knotvine Paladin as a 4/4 - unblocked. I dropped my 6th mountain, sacrificed Skirk Prospector and tapped out, casted Thunder Dragon, and took out all her knights except Skyhunter Patrol (booyah!!). She then casted Oblivion Ring on Thunder Dragon and passed. I sacrificed my Armillary Sphere, tutored up 2 mountains, played one, tapped for 2 and swung with my Dragon Whelp for 4 (unblocked).
Next turn, she dropped a Plains and passed. I dropped my 8th mountain, tapped for 7 to play Shivan Hellkite, then tapped the 8th mountain to make my Dragon Whelp a 3/3 and swung. She blocked with her 2/3 Skyhunter Patrol but casted Test of Faith to prevent the damage and turn her Skyhunter into a 5/6 flyer (!). then on her turn, she casted Knight of Cliffhaven, casted Reprisal to destroy my Shivan Hellkite, then swung with her 5/6 Skyhunter Patrol (no untapped blockers). Ouch! On my turn, I casted Punishing Fire on her Knight of Cliffhaven (destroyed), casted a Voracious Dragon (no goblins available to give it counters), and swung with my Dragon Whelp as a 3/3 (no blockers). She casted a Juniper Order Ranger, but then (and probably shouldn't have) swung for 5 with her Skyhunter Patrol. I chose not to block, putting the score at 9-6 in her favour. Then I tapped 4 mountains to pump my Dragon Whelp to 6/3, swung with it and the Voracious Dragon (4/4), and that ended the game (kept 4 untapped mountains with Temporary Insanity in hand, just in case).
We finished a bottle of wine during the last game, so please don't criticize our less-than-optimal play!
*edit* My GF would like me to mention that by the end of the last game, she only had 4 lands in play until her last turn (and 5 at that point), so mana-screw certainly played a role.
Yeah, the doomsayers are generally underrating the dragon deck's chances. Yes, it's slower, but the knight deck isn't THAT much faster; its mana curve is significantly higher than a typical "real" aggro deck (lots of 4 and even 5 cmc knights, and a number of the levelers require a significant mana investment before they get good), which helps both with keeping the dragons from getting consistently blown out in the early game and with giving the knights some late-game impact.
More importantly, though, the dragons have WAY more removal, including a few sweepers (or near-sweepers). The knights only have 3 pieces of removal, total, and their most likely sources of card advantage are a singleton Harm's Way and trying to force chump blocks, whereas the dragons have several cards that are almost automatic N-for-1s.
Granted, the dragon deck does sometimes lose quickly to a much faster draw by knights, and Silver Knight plus Loxodon Warhammer (both singletons) is almost an auto-win for knights, but in practice they're reasonably balanced for what is, after all, a product meant for the kitchen table.
Yeah, why does only the Dragon deck get it's token? The alt-art Oblivion Ring is nice, though.
No kidding! I love that O-ring, but hate foils so this is great. Also, I have been playing with a Starter 99 Thunder Dragon, and I really wanted the old duel deck version, but.... foil :(. I will be buying singles from this thing!

Just letting ya know she would lose the aura and not get a token either since the creature would have to go to the graveyard.Though i figure you really agreed to that cause its your GF.Gotta lose to win sometimes,ya know what im saying.
The rest of your post just confirms more about how bad the dragon deck is.If mana screw is the best way to beat knights, why even bother making the dragon deck it?

WOut of the ground,I rise to grace...W BAfter the lights go out on you, after your worthless life is through. I will remember how you scream...B
I've played both decks and discovered that while the Dragons has power and sweeps the Knights was too quick on the play, I would somehow always have 3-5 Knights in play by 4th turn while it took the Dragons much longer due to the Knights' Grassland and Treetop Village. If you had them in your starting 7 hand you almost always get through pretty quick, the Dragons only has mountains.
My experience has been ~75% wins by dragons, typically because the dragons have just drowned the knights under a wave of card advantage (though I did once get to live the dream with a turn 3 Shivan Hellkite, and knights with no removal in hand). Bottom line here is to just remember that the plural of "anecdote" still isn't "data". Hardly anyone is going to play enough games with these to get a large enough sample size to make a definitive statement on how balanced these decks are, but all the games I've played (except that unanswered turn 3 Hellkite game =) have at least felt very interactive and competitive.
I will grant that dragons may be harder to play well. Knights has some tricks and some land shenanigans going on, but for dragons success often seems to rest heavily on carefully judging the correct use of each piece of your removal, which can be skill-testing.
So far I'm having fun with it (and several of the cards will have homes in casual decks when we're done with the duel decks and break them down).

My two cents, a coworker and I ran through a few games and I felt mana screwed almost always with powerful dragons only one more mana away, while he chipped away and pumped out victories with the various knights abilities.
I may have won one game at the most...
My wife and I are going to play it more often to see more results.
I admit though, it is a very fun duel deck to play!
So after this disaster, who else is ready for DD: Dwarves vs. Walls?
I suggest 4x Dwarven Demolition Team. On a more serious note, at least some of the reports suggest that the gameplay isn't the complete disaster that was predicted. Still, it's not motivating me to buy it.
I've been demoing this product this week-end, so I have probably fifty games under my belt.
I'm still wanting more. The decks are excellently balanced with each other (barring severe mana screw the strongest player - me, obviously! - would win) and very fun to play.
It's very similar to playing a sealed deck where both players lucked out and possess very competent deck building skills. I haven't tried previous Duel Decks, so I can't judge is this is more or less fun - but in itself, this Duel Deck is fun.
Cheers!:cool2:
thats cool. still doesn't get me to buy it though.
Got the deck today. My friend loves his dragons and I lov my knights so naturally we put our money together and each grabbed a deck.
I am definitely not regretting it. The Knight Exemplar and White Knight with flavor text are an awsome suprise! I also didn't know there would be an alt art O-ring either. The art quality on the Knight of the Relaquary may not be as high quality as the original but now that I hold the card there's somthing about the artwork I really like. perhaps the pose or the background that makes me love it just as much as the originals. It also brought up the point in the hints section that Selesnya sactuaries help Knight of the White Orchid's ability which I had never considered before. I may throw some of those into my real Knight deck.
All in all I wish it had Tivadar, Waylay, Sunlance and more older knights but I am very happy with it.

No body mentioned the Oblivion Ring yet, it has the FNM art work: a magic ring surrounding what looks like a dragon. I didn't expect this version of Oblivion Ring, certainly a very sweet card for collector type like me.

I don't like how the box claims that there are two Mythic cards when they only made Knight of the Reliquary Mythic for this release. They could make the entire deck have a Mythic symbol and just claim there are 120 Mythic in the deck. Knight was released in a set that had Mythics and was simply a rare, bumping it up is just a cheap gimmick.

Does it really matter? KotR is more expensive and better than the dollar mythic Bogardan Hellkite anyhow. Maybe it's a gimmick for a pure casual crowd but it's not one that anyone else would fall for.
Knight of the Reliquary being bumped to mythic is just as arbitrary as Bogardan Hellkite being bumped to mythic from rare in Time Spiral. This set is a just a test from Hasbro to see if consumers are willing to blow $20 on a pair of shiny "mythic" rares and a bunch of junk. Needless to say, I am looking forward to Commander and future duel decks.

The fact that KOTR is mythic in this set clues casual players in to its value. It's so people who don't follow tourneys can say "Wow, a mythic! It must be valuable and in demand." - and they'll be right.

actually the dragon is more mythic than the knight on the grounds that its a BIG Powerful Creature it has mythical oozing from it.
