Everyone who actually plays the game will still be calling it 'EDH', since it is 'EDH', not 'Pinapple Wack-A-Mole' or whatever other name they think would be appropriate.
The truth of the matter is that older players will still develop their own decks and refer to the game as 'EDH', continuing to have fun with it while teaching new players within arms reach how to play 'EDH'. The new players will then proceed to say "So, it's essentially the same as Commander?", which will spark much laughter from the older players.
All the name change will achieve is the conception of a newb/veteran relationship amongst the players, as is found in almost every other format, so... yeah.

Highlander refers to another intellectual property that is explicitly referenced because of the "There can be only one" catch phrase. Releasing a product using the EDH format name would've been a lawsuit waiting to happen.

Then change it to 'Elder Dragon Hero', preserve the initials EDH, and stop wasting time changing one name to another that will never be used.

Well, except for the part where the people who created the format changed the website address and the format name of the format and refer to it by the new name now.
Elder Dragon Highlander isn't exactly the best name in the first place. The Elder Dragon cards have barely anything to do with the format other than being multicolor legendary creatures, and as stated "Highlander" is a pop culture reference. The name "Commander" at least reflects the most unique aspect of the format, the one legendary creature that determines what colors you use and can be cast from a special zone. There are other "highlander" formats, but no other variant has that commander/general aspect.
Then change it to 'Elder Dragon Hero', preserve the initials EDH, and stop wasting time changing one name to another that will never be used.
Elder Dragon Hero is actually way worse than Commander. This game already has an issue with overly nerding things. Commander as a name goes beyond copyright - Elder Dragon as an identifier is problematic because the game is based on Commanders or Generals and NOT Elder Dragons. Also, Commander has been Wizard's name with MODO for a long time anyway.
Commander, as much as it does not appeal to me, makes perfect sense in terms of branding. I'll still call it EDH, but it was the right move.
Why does the name matter at all? The rules are the same, the decks are the same. Is there any point to making a big deal over which term you use other than to maintain some sort of elitism over who the "real" players are?

I think that it makes a difference in this case because EDH was something outside the control of Wizards and people perceive this as a sort of power grab. "They" are trying to take over "Our" game.
I don't really think that's what is going on here, but people are pretty protective of their hobbies.

That. I can never understand why people think that just because they played it before others they're experts or are entitled to the game in any way. A guy said just some post before that when a "newb" says EDH is like Commander there'll be some sparks of laughter from the elder pros. Anyway, it means nothing what anyone calls the game as long as they have fun playing it.

people did the same thing when type 1, 1.5, and type 2, were renamed vintage, legacy and standard, or maybe not renamed, but given supplemental names.
Look i hope not all of the new magic cards are going to be wanted i see probably 10 will be jank multiplayer kind of cards i.e hive mind kind of thing while others will good legacy and vintage cards thus appealing to both the casual and serious market.
The trouble with the duel decks is many times players get them just to pick them apart hopefully commander decks wont be like that.

Sometimes its the only way to sell products. If there was a pack of Arch-Enemy schemes without the decks for the same price as the ones with the decks, I assure you I'd get the pack of new cards without any of the old. I doubt Wizards would want to sell $10 10-card "premium packs" and the extra EDH semi-staples (i.e. Ravnica bounce lands and talismans/signets) will be nice (if included). At least they'd be nice for giving away to new(er) Commander players to help support the format.
There's always a microthin chance of Wasteland/Force of Will/Mana Drain reprints as well. Since, you know, they are legal in EDH, played by many and owned by few. But I wouldn't hold my breath (nor sell my five forces).
Exactly, me LGS owner insists it's commander just to mess with us, but if you actually know what you are playing then you know it's EDH.
But if you know the slightest thing about marketing, you know that EDH is beyond a terrible name for the product. "Elder Dragon" doesn't have anything to do with it, and "Highlander" is legally contentious at best. Imagine explaining it to a new player: "It's called EDH, which means Elder Dragon Highlander, because the Elder Dragons, which are these legendary creatures you've never heard of, used to be used but no one ever uses them anymore, and Highlander comes from a movie you may or may not have seen because there can be only one of a specific card in a deck and 'There Can Be Only One' was a catchphrase in the movie..."
Or you just call it Commander because your deck is led by a single commander and have the one-of thing just be part of the rules of the format.
I guarantee you, "Commander" will sell more product than "Elder Dragon Highlander" ever could. Also it makes proper, logical sense as a format name rather than being derived from a specific playgroup's house setup where you have to base the deck around a specific Elder Dragon, along with a pop culture reference that's honestly very dated.

Explaining the name of Elder Dragon Highlander requires going into Magic history, explaining a pun based on a long-dead TV show, and then explaining that in spite of all this you can use any legend, not an Elder Dragon.
There are plenty of things in the world to be stubborn about. EDH is literally the worst possible name for something. Have you ever talked to a new player and explained it? Commander is much better as a name.
No one ever said that "Elder Dragon Highlander" made sense. But the fact remains, that is what the game is named. It has an emotional response tied to it. Sure, perhaps "Commander" is more accurate, but "Universal Peril & 'Over 9000!' moments" is a far more accurate name for "Dungeons & Dragons" as well, yet people will still call every roleplaying game they play "D&D", regardless of what system they use. Changing that name is pointless, as anyone can see, except for the fact that a person who is just getting into the system will see that name, and assume it to be the real name of the game.
Changing the name is NOT pointless, for reasons that have been reiterated a number of times. Those reasons may not mean much to you personally but they make perfect sense from the perspective of Wizards.
A name is a name. It will change, but the game does not. The number of people still calling Standard "Type II" is a testament to that.
...why even attempt to change the name?

And Standard is Type II.
And the DCI will always be the Duelists' Convocation International.
And the library will always be the deck, attacking will always be swinging and passing priority: "Go".
