It's absolutely hilarious that you use that example. Our Devour for Power player was using The Mimeoplasm as his commander. Buried Alive got used. Mimeoplasm was played. Troll Ascetic and Artisan of Kozilek were the exact two he used to form Mr. T-Rex-Hand's body. Proceed to faceroll. :3
the 51 new cards are legal in Vintage/Legacy, the other cards are legal where they are legal outside of special boxes
for casual legality doesnt matter anyway, if youre planning to make a kitchen table deck out of them
Ow that would be cool, how about those cards in archenemy like 'display of my dark power' which is also released as miscellaneous, are they legal on eternal format too? do you think these 51 new cards from the commander would be reprinted in other expansions? Thanks for teaching me, now I'm more motivated to buy it!
So I dunno if there is another place to discuss launch events, but anyways.
I just got back from the launch in my town. I was excited to play Devour for Power, but found out that there were no more available (along with Heavenly Inferno). Disappointed, I took Counter Punch, which I identified as the weakest deck. I wanted to challenge myself. But wow, is it way more powerful than I expected. The synergy that Ghave has with everything in the deck is just nuts. Vish Kal was the MVP, though. Create tokens with Sigil Captain on the field, sac them to Vish Kal, use his ability to kill blockers, sac some more tokens, pump him big, attack for massive damage/lifegain. Fun and powerful deck.
Bought all 5 decks, had a great time... One of the decks might have had more of the formats staple cards than the others, but power wise-- they all felt pretty balanced (outside of political puppets which just failed). Had a great time playing and trading, best release event ever with there being nothing to win, we all just had a good time playing for fun.
I truly hope not. 4-color cards are about the most inelegant and bizarre thing ever in Magic. It just feels so silly. how do you define and balance a 4 colors card? Just look at Nephilims. When I think bicolored stuff got kicked out a set for these things... sigh.
I hope for 2 colors commanders.
Amen. Although I wouldn't mind another Wedge set. Though I wish I could get something that would help more with my budget 5 color mana base other than just Command Tower.
my guess is we will get more stuff next year i hope for 4 color commanders
I'd like to see that, though I don't count on it. I definitely expect to see a new set of Commander Decks within the next couple of years, judging by how outrageously popular (and thus profitable) these have been, though I'd like to see new Planechase and Archenemy products also.

Id almost put more money on seeing another commander release before another Planechase or Archenemy release. But thats just based on the local market. No one around here plays Planechase or Archenemy, but EDH was already and established market, both in paper and online. Now that it has an official paper product too-- even more people that I know that never played EDH now have a Commander deck and are hungry for more.
While I cant say how well the other 2 formats sold in other markets, Id have to bet that they didnt fair nearly as well as these will... and unlike Planeschase and Archenemy (both of which Ive been able to find at least some decks for on clearance prices at different game stores on my travels) I doubt these will ever see a clearance rack. The Sol Rings and playable Commander cards in these things are fair quality for the price, and the fact that there are unique cards here means people may have to pick up multiple copies to extra playsets.
However--- if they learn from Commander and print some new multiplayer cards in those other formats--- I could see those selling well now because of the Commander crowd and people wanting to get their hands on the new multiplayer cards.
All in all though, admittedly I am biased towards Commander and perhaps I just want it to succeed more than those other 2 formats. While I enjoyed the other 2 formats and appreciate having multiple ways to play the game to keep it from getting old-- I feel like Commander is capable of generating enough random outcomes to keep the format fresh for a long time to come. While archenemy and planechase deliver a bit of a random feel from their oversized cards---- those decks still seem to be regular old decks with a bit of random thrown in... Commander, on the other hand, Im always seeing different takes and strategies even with the same commander--- as well as seeing old cards that I had forgotten existed... Not to mention its the ONLY format that Ive ever seen Norin, the wary ever actually turn out to be a games MVP.

With panoramas, refuges, m10 duals, terramorphic, and rav bounce lands you should be well on your way to budget mana

Why not combine them!? Planechase Commander! Archenemy Commander! Planechase Archenemy Commander! Planechase Archenemy Vanguard Commander! Throw in some UN cards for total chaos. Well, that might just be stupid, but whatever. I, personally, like how there are different formats like that and that they actually can be combined without stretching things too much.
But still...I wonder if they will try Vanguard again before making new Planechase, Archenemy, or Commander decks...
But...you mentioning the new cards got me thinking...You know how Command Tower only really does anything in Commander? Well, what if there were new Planechase decks with new unique cards, and one of them only really did anything in Planechase? I'm sure Planechase isn't as popular, so it wouldn't be as well received, but I think there's interesting potential for unique cards there.
I don't know if this is the right place to share this, but yeah, Cool Story Bro-ish...
Commander products has just appeared on stores here in the Philippines and I'm pretty flabbergasted that Heavenly Inferno just got snuffed hours into the mall openings! So I asked to get one reserved from a store, but its price has gone up to $35 instead of $30. Then again, rather pay the additional $5 rather than face the probably much higher shipping fee if I order abroad.

yeah. the mimeoplasm is like, my favorite dude ever. last night i exiled a krosan tusker and a chorus of the conclave on turn 4. that game was a total blowout.
On the Thursday night/Friday morning midnight release party at my local shop, we had a six player game going with two Devour for Power decks (mine and another guy) and one of each other deck.
Since the first guy was playing The Mimeoplasm, I decided I would use Damia, Sage of Stone as my General instead (I forgot he's doesn't come in as The Mimeoplasm and was trying to avoid the Legend rule). I wish I had played The Mimeoplasm because he was NUTS! Both of us hit Memory Erosion early on, I hit a Dreamborn Muse as well, and the other guy kept cursing me for forgetting to save mana for his Shared Trauma for a couple turns.
As the four hour game wore on, if the other Devour for Power player wasn't exiling his own Lhurgoyf, Mortivore, or Sewer Nemesis for the counters, he was stealing mine. At one point, we had a 47/46 copy of Artisan of Kozilek on the table. For the final turn, I ended up decking the other Devour for Power player with a Shared Trauma, the Mirror Mastery player Spellcrumpled the last play for the Heavenly Inferno player and then killed him with a Magmatic Force and Chartooth Cougar. With three cards left in my deck, I played Eternal Witness, got back Lightning Greaves, and swung in with Mortivore for the win with Wonder and Brawn in the graveyard for the Mirror Mastery blockers.
Okay, I got the Counterpunch deck and went to the pre-release/release (I don't know the difference though) last saturday. And it surprised me how good the deck was. You should cast Storm Herd as fast as possible, since you'll have a lot of life points for the Pegasus. I got beaten by another Counterpunch-user because of that card, but luckily since I was on second position, I still could participate the "second round" (which only filled by another second-positioner like me) and won the table with my friend (which was the winner of "second round") for Mirrodin Besieged faction boosters
But still, I think Counterpunch could be filled with better cards. I found it really weird for a token deck without any mass creature-pumper like Overrun or something like that

Playing EDH/Commander in real life and Cockatrice. ID: ALEX Ryugami
Yesterday my friend and i opened our 5 Decks and where kinda surprised.
While my deck was "normal" according to the Decklist, my friends deck was missing some sorceries and every land card. Instead he had all other cards x2. Every legend x2, Garruk x2, Sol Ring x2....
Reminded me of those "all-rare boosters" some time ago.
I just hope there won't be anybody out there who opens his Deck, finding only land cards in there now x)

Now that I've had some time to think about it, it's odd that one of the only decks not including has the worst manabase and color fixing. Political Puppets is the only deck without any signets, and it has the least amount of non-basics among the set. You'd think that without spell-based ramp to back up the deck, that more color-fixing/artifact mana would be included to offset this.
My friends and I split all 5, and wow are these a blast. Mirror mastery is my favorite. I just loved setting up wierd combos with copies of recursion dudes.
Just got these in the mail (I preordered all five for $125 shipped) and they are awesome. I made one awesome deck out of the best cards, and one good deck. My Counterpunch deck was slightly miscut but no biggie.
Finding it really difficult to get ahold of heavenly inferno, that deck seems to be the hardest to find. Anyone else having trouble finding this deck?
Our local comic stores were all sold out before the release, then a friend and I both went to the local Wal*Mart & Target looking... they only had "the blue decks." We wanted the R/B/W & the B/W/G decks... apparently so does everyone else.

"Whatever style you wish to play, be it fast and frenzied or slow and tactical, the surest way to defeat your opponent consistently is by dominating him or her in the war of card advantage." - Brian Wiseman, April 1996
I actually work at a wal-mart and the day it was stocked i ran up right after it was stocked, and yet no inferno. We didn't even get one --}======> walmart
I really hope that the inferno deck dosen't turn into another rat's nest.
Why is everyone searching Heavenly Inferno? I thought Political Puppets and Devour for Power would have beeen the ones to disappear from shelves in 2 days...
Heavenly Inferno is a really solid deck. Political Puppets is such jank that there are only a few good cards in it so there's not much reason to buy it. I don't know why people aren't buying out Devour for Power though, maybe people don't like the milling theme.

Puppets has Chaos Warp, Martyr's Bond, Flusterstorm, Nin, and Champion's Helm, so although I agree with you about the fact that it's jank, it's by FAR the most worthwhile for singles and new cards.
personally, I think the inferno just needs a better cast of demons and dragons along with better tutors and a way to reload your hand, promise of power anyone?
I would actually like to pick them all up at some point, if only for collection reasons. Have you guys tried stores that focus on sports cards and sports memorabilia? I stumbled upon one in my area and went in to buy some hockey stuff as a bday present for my cousin and noticed they carried all five of the commander decks. Maybe I should have picked them up right there...
