I know there has been some discussion about a MTG film here before so I thought I'd mention it.
Found this news tidbit concerning Universal and the Hasbro properties:
The studio has also reportedly dumped plans for films based on "Monopoly" and "Magic: The Gathering" which have both been in development for a few years.
Looks like Hasbro is still looking to makes something happen. Just don't let Michael Bay get his hands on it!
The problem with a magic movie is that it'd be about one of the more recent blocks, which pale in comparison to the awesomeness of the former story arcs of Urza's time, or Onslaught Block.
Plus, the stories are far too long for a 2.5 hr movie, and most of them haven't been wrapped up yet.
Though if they did make a movie, I'd hope for CG and not animated/live-action, since WOTC definately doesn't have the budget for the latter, and the former would look really kid-ish. A CG movie would at least be campy or something. (and they should be able to get the characters to look right.)
Yeah, I love Magic (duh), but I don't really wanna see a movie made out of it. These things never end well.

Mila Kunis IMO. Her Black Swan performance was basically Liliana in tights.

Out of the blackness and stench of the engulfing swamp emerged a shimmering figure. Only the splattered armor and ichor-stained sword hinted at the unfathomable evil the knight had just laid waste.
I am very happy about this. There is zero chance this was going to be a good movie.
Agreed. Of course, how many years have we been talking about this?
I could see a TV show of sorts... but still... *yeeeeek*
I doubt if many fans of the game would bother going to see it. I don't care if the Battleship trailer looks surprisingly interesting... it's likely a dog of a film.

I think they could make a decent movie. The settings and planeswalker concept allow for lot of potential. But recently they haven't even gotten the books to be good, so aside from any budget issues, I am dubious of any film version.
That said, it looks like Hasbro still wants it to happen. Just like the plans for a live action Akira just won't die (which is something I really just don't want to happen), I'd say it's inevitable.
As far as getting fans to go see it, three words: "exclusive planeswalker promo."
I hope this gets made into a movie... With such comprehensive storylines, it would probably be best-siuted as a trilogy. If it did happen, I would put my money on the original five walkers (perhaps with cameos of others) vs. Bolas.
a movie about the weatherlight and the urza story in general could be made into a decent flick. key word could...

They could do scars block with Samuel L. Jackson as Koth "I WANT THESE MOTHER *****ING PHYREXIANS OFF MY MOTHER *****ING PLANE!"

I'd like to see them do the Brothers' War, but they'd have to cut a lot of stuff to get it down to 2.5 hours or so.
I think there's a fundamental issue with closure on the MTG stories, which I'm sure is deliberate to keep the game going, but difficult for moving making.
Except that Wizards wouldn't use a movie to advertise their game using storylines many current Magic players aren't familiar with and doesn't reflect the current product.
Mario Brothers - No
Dungeons and Dragon- oh god no
Pokemon - no
I dont think its possible.
Im pretty sure the first pokemon movie was a huge success.
and jeremy irons was hillarious in d and d.
i think it would be neat no matter what way they went with it, it wouldent effect the game at all. People wont quit if it bombs, and it will at least open up magic to people that dont play it.
The only REAL loss would be the studios money, which i dont care about.

I personally think an mtg mmo could be amazing. Key word there is could lol.

The only way an mtg movie would work is if the plot had Harrison Ford hunting for his family.

It was a self-contained plane, all the backstory it needs can be given at the beginning by Teysa or learned just be watching the movie.

I have heard that one of the mortal kombat films was actually decent, but I am not a fan of the games so...
Yeah, Resident Evil 1 takes the cake
The first MK has a nostalgic feel, its soo cheesy that it works.
The atmosphere is great, the music fits and c'mon, Christopher Lambert dammit!!!
That realistic 8 minute trailer for an alleged new mortal kombat movie looks.... well here see for yourself
