People thinking this is going to have Goldmane and not Vengeant need to get the hint. The art clearly shows Ajani Vengeant. In the book he was still Vengeant when he faught bolas. He used Soul's Fire to fight Bolas. I would rip two Scrublands in half it has Ajani Goldmane in it and not Vengeant.

Clearly it is vengent. I want to see new cruel art as well. Would be nice to see relevant shocklands in each deck. I just want some ballon reprints with new art. He'll new thoughtseize?
Its at least going to be WR vs. UBR, but probably Naya colors.
I think Vengeant's ultimate to wipe all lands from the opponent would certainly balance out Bola's insane mana cost. Surely, once a player gets Bolas onto the battlefield, it's over. At least unless the Ajani player has some good blockers set up and some tokens ready for destruction.

Brilliant assessment. In fact, his NAME happens to be Goldmane. He's "Vengeant" for Jazal's death at the hands of one of his own pack member's doing (read the comics). And Goldmane is Ajani AFTER he's avenged his brother's death. Interestinly enough, this means Lorwyn could take place after the Shards of Alara block, or even the Scars of Mirrodin block. For all we know, that may have just been Ajani from a future or alternate timeline. It's happened before.
Yeah, I'm Triscuitable from Giant in the Playground. I made my avatar too. I make avatars in the style of the Order of the Stick. If you want one, you can request one. Expect a wait, I do them on GitP as well.

Agree with new Cruel art. Maybe with more Bolas seen. I will probaly pick up just because it is freaking Bolas in one of the decks.
Even after all this time, I still don't own any AV or NB in paper, so I'll end up picking at least one copy of this up.
I've been a big fan of the new Duel Decks, Elspeth v Tezzeret was fantastic, and I have great hopes for this series going forward....just not too sure about Knights vs Dragons.

Well, Lorwyn's storyline is more or less unconnected to any other setting, so it doesn't really matter when in time it takes place. But the planeswalkers printed in Lorwyn have no connection to that plane or its story, so the fact that Goldmane was printed in Lorwyn doesn't mean anything in terms of placing it on the timeline. We've seen the mono-white form of Ajani in a webcomic anyway, which takes place after Alara and before/during Scars, so there's not "alternate timeline" things going on.
I know these aren't necessarily targeted for new players and that it is a fan service product, but for the record, it can't help the game to be selling products featuring words that no outsider is going to have a clue how to pronounce.
If I'm a complete stranger to Magic and I see "Ajani vs. Nicol Bolas" on a box, I assume the ship has sailed and I'm never catching up to people who know what the hell this is.
Anyway, this announcement wasn't too much of a surprise, what with trademarks and all. It's still pretty exciting though. I'll probably pick up one of these. Anyway, does anyone think there's any chance of them including Nicol Bolas in addition to Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker? Or is that too much Nicol Bolas?

Ajani isn't really hard to figure out how to say. Nicol Bolas isn't all that tricky either, though I might snicker if I heard someone pronounce it as "Nicole".
It's not like there's no context either, the packaging will clearly show that Ajani is a feline humanoid and Bolas is a big dragon. The "VS" means they're fighting. That's something simple enough to understand without prior knowledge.

It's not like those names are difficult to sound out. In any case, they're supposed to sound exotic and strange while the big draw for new players is the splash art and the "vs."
Cool idea, but it's too bad that we'll get Vengeant and not Goldmane. There's already an alt. art foil Vengeant, the pre-release one. I would have liked to see a new and foil Goldmane

Then have him eat Nicol Bolas and the Magic universe can be awesome again. He takes over the Infinite Consortium and turns it into a trans-multiverse Izzet League. His agents scour the multiverse in Venser's planeships looking for magic to learn, technology to improve upon, and less intelligent people to condescend to.
I want my Saffi vs Lhurgoyf deck, WoTC~ Make it happen! Add more sillyness into this LOP.
I don't know if that would have nearly the groundbreaking, unprecedented impact of Atogs Vs. Lhurgoyfs. It might even top Jace Vs. Chandra as the best-loved Duel Deck yet released. Plus you could still throw in Saffi Eriksdotter as an ally to the Atog deck. But only with alternate art of her lying on a Lhurgoyf-skin rug, cradling an Ivory Cup full of Blessed Wine and winking suggestively to the viewer, of course.
If Slave of Bolas is not in this upcoming set, with Argyle's vastly superior original art, My monocle may very well tumble from above my cheek.
That duel deck will be either monowhite, Boros, or Naya.
If it was in Naya colours (WGR), it would include a colour that the planeswalker isn't.
No planeswalker duel deck has yet used colours the walker in charge isn't.
Therefore, Ajani's deck will not be Naya. It will be monowhite or Boros.
Until Phyrexia vs. the Coalition, no duel deck has has had any colors the Mythic foil card wasn't. That pattern has been broken already. Besides, the character Ajani can use green spells. Ajani is casting both Soul's Majesty and Soul's Might.
I once farted during the final match for prizes at an FNM. It was a tense moment, everything was quiet, control vs control, I was about to mana leak, thought about it.. and farted. Then mana leaked.

Did we read the same book? Writers convenience caused Ajani to win in the most bs way possible.
When the fight began, he was Vengeant. The fight itself (more precisely, bathing in the remnant of Maelstrom that Bolas left) helped him to become Goldmane.
The win was a bit forced, yes. But that is a problem of the author, who tried very much to adhere to the abilities of the planeswalker cards (Ajani's cutting off the mana links of all warriors (Vengeant's ultimate), Elspeth granting strenght and flight to Rafiq to slay Malfegor (her second ability), Sarkhan boosting Rakka's men during the dragon-fight (his first) or being given five slave dragons by Bolas (his ultimate)...etc.) Ajani invoking Bolas' soul simulacrum is the representation of Goldmane's ultimate.
