Now this is a Duel deck I will buy 4 of. I haven't been a fan of any of the duel decks, but Venser and Koth are 2 of my favorite characters. Lets hope their decks are amazing as they are.
So then what do you suppose the two Factions could be?
No idea, since we don't know the theme/story of next year's fall set. Knowing that it will probably be on Ravnica doesn't necessarily tell us everything.
If I had to speculate... it could be like Phyrexia vs. the Coalition and not directly tie in to the set itself but still be relevant to the setting. Something like "Boros vs. Dimir" wouldn't be out of the question, even though those guilds no longer technically exist at the present time.
Shouldn't the set be called, if it's Venser and Koth facing the world of Scars, duel decks: Venser and Koth? They don't want to stop each other, thy're allies for god sake. It's not a duel deck, it's the duet deck they were making fun of an April fools day ago. Except instead of love, it's a buddy cop movie.
From the description in the Arcana, the "conflict" this represents is Koth trying to bully Venser into coming to save Mirrodin. Which was resolved quite quickly in the webcomic by Koth sealing Venser's head in rock and forcing him to go. A whole duel is much more satisfying, though, and is closer to resembling an actual story event than Elspeth vs. Tezzeret ever was.
The guildpact was dissolved at the end of Dissension. There are no guilds with which to create a duel deck. I suppose they could revisit pre-dissension Ravnica, but that's about it.
The conflict doesn't have to be current. For example, in the article it was mentioned that Wizards had wanted to tie in Phyrexia vs Coalition with the return of Phyrexians in SoM block, even though the actual PvC story took place years ago in Invasion block. It's possible for them to do Guild vs Guild for the return to Ravnica for the nostalgia factor and/or to introduce newer players to the old Ravnica.
Cool, but i wish its release date was swapped with AvNB,
to give buyers of the decks more time to play the planeswalkers in standard.
Moving the factions to relevant times is smart,
that way we don't just see yawners like KvD.

Ah, that makes more sense flavour-wise. At first, when I read about the product, I thought, "What will they make next? Sorin vs. Nissa? Seriously, I thought Venser and Koth worked together!" (Seriously, Sorin and Nissa also worked together before in Zendikar.)
There's just something very underwhelming about this.
There's some magical mixture of hating the Scars storyline, not liking either of the 'walkers or thier cards, and the influx of these dual decks. I don't like Venser, but the handling of his character has turned me off the storyline entirely. It's like all of the year's scrapings from the bottom of several MTG barrels mixed together and sold for $29.95.
I'm glad that someone is thrilled. All I can really hope for is some decent reprints, I suppose.

Underling Ethu's 263rd report read simply "Yes, my lord.Overwhelmingly, my lord." This marked the end of the Mirran-Phyrexian War.
The Koth looks amazing, and Venser looks terrible. Why couldn't they have used his original PW art. On another note this will alow me to get foil copies on the cheap for EDH/Cube/DC10 stuff.

You know what else would have helped that duel deck? If it had been good! Seriously, 5 color vs mono black? Furthermore, there was no "name" card to sell the set on. The only way I could push it was by pointing out to newer EDH players that it had a lot of staple cards in the deck. Unfortunately established EDH players already had all the cards in it that they needed. One of the worst-selling duel decks since Elves vs. Goblins.

Venser looks very cool but Koth is just silly. There's no blur or focus or anything (besides the smoke I guess) to make him look like he's moving forward, instead he just seems to be falling into some lava. Think the Urabrask art only less interesting.
That said I'm not terribly overwhelmed by this development, although Wizards' announcement is fairly intriguing

A lie is a lie if everyone believes it. The truth is the truth if no one does.
I was under the assumption that the art was supposed to show them (the walkers) in combat with each other for the duel decks.. there is nothing linking those two pictures together.. Still the art is sweet.
I guess this means I must give up on my dream for a Nissa duel deck (since we "moved on" to walkers from later sets)
Isn't Venser dead? I mean.. this conflict makes no sense IMO they only had a minor tiff in the comics...

This makes me really happy, but presents a bit of a dilemma -- I was just planning to purchase a Venser for cube/casual, and I really don't need two... but I also don't know if I want to wait until March. Decisions!
Can we speculate about what cards will be included here? The basic plan for Venser is pretty obvious, so we can guess a lot of inclusions. Momentary Blink as his alt-art "signature" spell would be very cool. And Reveillark as one of his rares would be epic. As for Koth, what do we think they'll do to differentiate his mono red aggro deck from Chandra's?

Well, other than um... those balls that Venser is holding. The arts actually look nice.
And Koth... well DAYUM.
P.S. The title seems misleading because Koth and Venser were never really on edge with each other on the recent continuity. They may bicker yes... but VERSUS? Hope that lead to people thinking they are fighting each other or something.

Since all the other planeswalker decks have had some level of actual storyline-based conflict beyond "minor tiff" I have to call shenanigans on this one. Very odd pairing choice. I'm not complaining, because I don't have either of these and anything that gets me closer to filling out my planeswalker collection helps.
Part of me wonders if the switch to a later release for faction-based decks is so they have time to come up with a better idea than the last one. If my anecdotal experience is anything to go on (probably not), Knights vs. Dragons is by a rather wide margin the worst-selling of all of them. If they don't have a non-storyline idea that won't bomb just as badly as that one did, then perhaps it's better that they give themselves a few extra months to figure one out.
