ok, so does anyone have any feedback on how these two decks actually play against each other? (I've watched the scg video already).
The GF bought me a copy of this and I'm on the fence as to whether or not to return it to wal mart.
I mean, the lists suck, not much value for your $20 either. But at least if they play well it might be salvageable. I proxied it up for a game or two and wasn't satisfied. Anyone play 5+ games yet have any opinion on it?

I played 4 games of them against each other and just HAD to change the decks. Koth practically has nothing to get around Wall of Denial, and most of Venser's deck isn't worth blinking in my opinion. Venser won 3-1, if you're curious.

I have not. And I've only watched the video. IMO, really not worth it, unless you want the cards inside.
I suppose if you're willing/interested in tuning up the deck, then go for it. IMO, Venser looks to the be most interesting once it's fully tuned (Avacyn Restored has a lot of cool blink cards to look forward to).
Reprints the one card that people point to when saying that art objectifies women.
Well done Wizards.
Liliana does not objectify women in any way at all. We have gotten to a point in our society that every single picture of a women must be objectifying a women in some negative way......blah blah blah.. That is not the case. (((Sarcasm)))Picture of a girl drinking a milk shake, must be sex related and putting women down, picture of girl sitting on a beach, picture of a girl driving a car, picture of a girl on the moon at a new space station.)))
You have a picture of an attractive strong power women who girls dress up as for anime conventions. What more do you want? The picture is fine, happy to see a reprint. Sick of of seeing people claim that everything in existence must be putting women down. Then all I have to do is replace the word "women" with anything else to get the same mentality; fish, cats, arabs, blacks, jews, men, environment, whites, chinese, old people, etc. It doesn't matter what word I put in. Stop sucking life out of everything man. That artwork of her is awesome. Stop putting stuff down man. Just stop. If the picture was really as negative as you claim she would totally nude, in a kitchen, making sandwiches and giving blow jobs. Her abilities would be horrible as well. +1 do nothing -2 do nothing -6 do nothing. Instead liliana of the veil is an amazing planeswalker comparable to jace, the mind sculpter with great art to appreciate.
My suggestion listen to some comedy radio for a while, pandora is free, youtube is free there is something out there for you. ***** go make fun of somebody. The whole world is so serious and campaigning for some cause, or someones rights, everything is a hate crime, racist, sexist. blah blah blah.
"O no mcdonalds must be slandering a hate crime against skinny people every time they make a big mac." hahaha jeeze You're just someone perpetuating another groups negative perspective that they've made you believe is correct. Look at the picture for a hour and tell me what's wrong with it? I don't see anything.
I have heard vague rumors of a moustache-dispensing vending machine in a distant laundromat, across the street from a tattoo parlor. However, this information is shaky, and time is of the essence.
I've played nine games total. Five when I first got them with a friend, four the day after, switching decks. First day Koth won 4-1. Venser's blinking can't be used very well AT ALL and the only time I won was with the aforementioned godly Wall of Denial . One match ended with me losing to a 7/1 Pygmy Pyrosaur with the Vulshok Battlegear attached to it.
The next day it was tied and we never got to a fifth match. 2-2. I used Koth this time around. They were definitely more exciting and fun, a bit more drawn-out than most games I'm used to. Had to contend with a Slith that got WAY out of hand and managed to overrun Wall of Denial with Anger for a win. Very satisfying stuff.
Ultimately I had great fun playing the two against each other. Took apart they're junk, and aren't competitive at all against real decks, but very fun against one another with friends.
EDIT: also the new Anger art is just so great I can't stop looking at it
GF wouldn't take no and opened it up for me. We sleeved them up and played 2 games, I won both once as Venser and once as Koth.
The Venser deck is interesting, and although many cards are subpar, there are a few gems. The path to exile art isn't as good as the original. You spend a lot of time trying to figure out ways to win with chaff. But you stay busy and have options, and that makes for a fun and satisfying play experience.
The Koth deck is vanilla boring. Play lands, get lands, play more lands, blow stuff up, firebreathing wow. It's linear, and you will tire of it by the 6th turn. Koth has a ton of removal, which makes interacting with Venser easy, but while Venser is doing all kinds of tricks and getting his blink system online, you play mountains and turn things sideways. The new Anger art in person is bonkers. I keep looking at it and finding new nuances I didn't notice before. Koth in the background is pretty sick. The flavor of the card including the text just ties it all together. If you are buying singles from this set, I'd pick up an Anger for your edh.
I'd say the decks are pretty balanced. Overall, the gameplay barely saves this one thanks to Venser, so it's one I will sleeve, box up, and put into the collection. It doesn't compare to AvNB, but I like the play experience better than EvT due to the fact that out of 50+ games Elspeth seems to win 85% of the time. One of the most important factors of a Duel Deck is the balance (check my sig for my homebrew project which is very balanced) and VvK seems to have hit the mark. I'll know for sure once I hit 50+ games down the road.
If you plan to split this with a friend, take the Venser deck and don't look back.

If the store owner says that I can't trade in the premises, I'll just go outside. If he says that I can't trade within 10m of his premises, I'll go to 11 meters. If he says that he doesn't want to see me trading, I will put a basket over his head and continue trading.

The guildpact was dissolved at the end of Dissension. There are no guilds with which to create a duel deck. I suppose they could revisit pre-dissension Ravnica, but that's about it.
Actually that's incorrect. There are no longer any OFFICIAL guilds. They still exist, but there is no longer a law defining and confining them. Therefore, we could see a Guild duel deck. However, it's highly unlikey, as there are ten to choose from, and picking nay two would have fans of the other eight up in arms. Either way, possible, but not probable.

To be honest it's barely worth it for $20...if you can get it for $18 then it's a decent buy. Here is where I found value:
Koth and Venser - worth about $6 - $7 each
Path to Exile - don't care for new art, but $4 card
Preordain - alt art pretty cool, preordain is a solid staple.
Anger - gotta see this one in person, hold it in your hand and you will believe
Flood Plain - the primitive fetch. nice touch to have a modern frame.
The rest of it is basically a mismash of random stuff, most of it you won't find a home for in your other decks. Maybe the sphinx and angel...maybe.
Gameplay wise, I'd give it a 3.5/5. EvT was a 3.0/5 and AvNB a 4.2/5 just to give you a rough comparison. And I mean all factors, most important fun and balance. Venser is a fun deck, but if Koth wasn't so linear I'd give it a 4.0 or more. I enjoy playing as venser, and dread playing koth.
A guild vs guild duel deck would be an AUTOMATIC INSTANT WIN and I would buy 2 of each just on principle alone.
WHY??? are these such trash! 2 marginal walkers with limited chaff for decks. Really surprised after Ajani v Bolas was soo good. Just shows how poor the walkers were for the last 2 blocks if this was the best they could come up with. They didn't even do Sorin v Nissa.
Played a dozen or so games, half with each deck. Koth is the winner here, not because he has clever or interesting cards, but because more than 3 of them are capable of turning sideways. No joke. And using any sort of praise on Lithophage is a difficult task, believe me. Venser requires one of 3 cards in the deck to swing for anything resembling damage, and the rest is really fun but ultimately non-threatening. Even with them out there's more gigantic burn spells in Koth's arsenal than finishers, and Koth himself has a reasonably obtained emblem. Was glad to get some alt-arts, foil walkers, a couple of fun rares, and ultimately some laughs a a turn 2 revoke existence on wayfarer's bauble. No regrets.
Perhaps you should just send WOTC a resume and tell them why you're better at Magic than one of their employees instead of complaining here, where nobody really has any authority on the matter.
Its such a pain... because these decks could have such potential, especially if they previewed some AVR cards (of which there is plenty to choose from that would fit in either one...)
I played a few duel deck games with my friend, and Koth won 70% of the games. There's few ways the Venser deck player can stop a 10 damage burn spell, most of the games were finished off with a burn spell just when Venser was able to stabilize against the creature assaults.
If the store owner says that I can't trade in the premises, I'll just go outside. If he says that I can't trade within 10m of his premises, I'll go to 11 meters. If he says that he doesn't want to see me trading, I will put a basket over his head and continue trading.

Interesting...how enjoyable was the Ajani vs. Bolas deck? I've been interested in getting the walkers from that set, but the lists were rather lackluster IMO (well, they had more interesting cards I'd say). Not as bad as this set though.

Huh, I liked the way these played, got some pretty cool cards too. Vensers deck is way more fun and has won more of the matches I've played. Its pretty easy to put koth in bad situations and stall him out, and the average quality of your draws is better from what I've seen.
Sure mountains are important, but it doesn't help to top deck 3 in a row while venser sets up something simple like sky spirit + steel of the godhead and/or sigil of sleep. Even if it gets removed, a couple swings is hard to come bck from. Idk, maybe I need to play koth more
I liked bolas v ajani better just cause dropping either of those walkers is really fun times, but as fr as how the decks play gainst each other, I like this one better.

The true mind can weather all the lies and illusions without being lost. The true heart can tough the poison of hatred without being harmed. Since beginning-less time, darkness thrives in the void but always yields to purifying light.
I invision a future where one is not mighty when he can silence a crowd with brutality,
but when he leaves them speechless with wisdom.
I'm still at 55-45 or so in Koth's favor. Venser is very difficult to play, and I've seen millions of misplays with him. He requires a lot of clever though, long-term gameplan ideas and stuff; he needs to be played by a chess player.
For example, I remember winning a game so hard because, while I was behind, I realized leaving Overrule open on t5th would have been better than wasting that mana on trying to catch up (always play to win, not to lose slower). Next turn I'm still behind, but I countered a Geyser Glider so hard. That eventually lead to a staunch takeover... Then again, I left OR open in another game, for 3 turns, and caught nothing with it. I tried so hard to play it like I had the previous game, but I made mistakes on the reads, and wasted turns hoping to catch something when it was obvious that one turn of blanks rarely leads to a big spell...
Also, I lost just the other night because I was ahead and overextended with a 4/5 Sunblast Ange. It got outclassed by Lithophage, it I got further and further behind from a stark lead before succumbing to embarrassing defeat. Holding that Angel for a couple turns would have sealed the deal so hard :(.
Even a good player has a lot to learn about Magic from that deck, a lot to learn indeed.
If the store owner says that I can't trade in the premises, I'll just go outside. If he says that I can't trade within 10m of his premises, I'll go to 11 meters. If he says that he doesn't want to see me trading, I will put a basket over his head and continue trading.

"Bound by hell-forged chains and fate-haunted circumstance. Well, then--let it be thus so--and men will have cause to tremble and flee when they hear the names of Elric of Melinbone and Stormbringer, his sword. We are two of a kind--produced by an age which has deserted us. Let us give this age cause to hate us!”
I picked up one of these this week and played a couple games against my girlfriend last night. She played Koth, and I played Venser. She's still a pretty new player, so I figured Koth would be more straight-forward (it was). I'm relatively new (been playing seriously for about three years), but I've picked up quite a few things over my career.
I won both games, but the first game she would have won had she realized that Anger in her graveyard gave her dudes haste. She had two 4+ power dudes and I was tapped out with just a Sunblast Angel in play. I ended up ultimating with Venser a turn or two later and that was that. The second game, I put Sigil of Sleep on Neurok Invisimancer and just bounced all of her creatures into oblivion, while countering Earth Servants and other such nasties.
All in all, it was lots of fun. The flavor of the decks played out PERFECTLY. Venser was all tricksy, bouncing creatures around, dodging fat guys, teleporting around, all very annoying and smug, just like his new artwork. Koth came out with dudes all smash-y and got frustrated when he couldn't connect. I felt very sneaky and weasel-y toying with Koth, and she was frustrated when she couldn't get anything going. (But of course, there is the flavor-fail issue of why Venser and Koth are even fighting in the first place.)
Yeah, of course the decks are awful. They're not even remotely competitive except against each other. I guess they're kind of on par with synergistic draft decks, or Duels of the Planeswalker decks (Koth's deck even has a lot of the same cards as his deck in D12). We both felt like Koth's deck could have used a little more burn and a couple more early drops (like another Geopede and/or another 1- or 2-drop. But maybe she just didn't get the best draws. And, like I said, she really should have one that first game with Anger-haste. Maybe with a larger sample size, Koth might win more.
All in all, I think this is a great product, [BIG] IF you get it as a Duel Deck. That is, just shuffle em up, and play em against each other. If you want a product for collecting tournament staples, or previewing upcoming sets, or secondary-market value, you're going to be disappointed.
tl;dr: A++ would play again.

And, like I said, she really should have one that first game with Anger-haste. Maybe with a larger sample size, Koth might win more.
All in all, I think this is a great product, [BIG] IF you get it as a Duel Deck. That is, just shuffle em up, and play em against each other. If you want a product for collecting tournament staples, or previewing upcoming sets, or secondary-market value, you're going to be disappointed.
tl;dr: A++ would play again.
