It's really not that good. You HAVE to have a sleeved copy of the card with you in case your general gets tucked and I don't know if you've ever tried to play a 5+ person game of EDH on a single table, but there isn't exactly a whole lot of room for unnecessarily large vanity cards.
Yep, I figured out my very first game of EDH that those oversize general cards that come with the precons are unplayable. Mine didn't even get tucked, just Unsummoned, but I felt pretty silly holding that huge general in my hand with my other cards.

This literally made me LOL. Sorry you had to go through that but thanks for posting it.
Personally, I think Wizards seriously dropped the ball on this. It's not just that I think they've dropped the ball on actually making the Helvault exciting (which they have, too many people are unmotivated), but they've made trying to do something like this again in the future a lot more challenging. And if they wanted to draw in an increased number of players for the pre-release with this promo, sure, it'll probably work this time. But with such a large number of players being incredibly disappointed, they're going to be hard-pressed to use such a gimmick again. It really does look bad for you brand to say, "We're gonna make this event as cool as a rock concert! Once in a lifetime opportunity!" and then pull back the curtain to reveal the band playing is Nickleback.
Honestly, after the amount of chaff that Wizards put into the From the Vault: Legends and Venser vs. Koth and how incredibly banal this promotional event is, they seem even more out of touch with players both casual and competitive than usual.

I probably won't go to the event, and the helvault isn't helping either. I'm on a budget, so I can't afford to go or even buy more expensive cards these days, but it definitely isn't worth it if they aren't giving decent rares / mythics or other decent promotional support.

I seriously wonder why people think that EVERY thing that WOTC puts out has to speak directly to them on every level, and include tournament level reprints of things. Seriously, there are plenty of people who loved the products you listed. I may not be included in them, but they exist. First step in preventing disapointment by having this game as a hobby is to realise that side promotions like Helavault and products like Intro Decks and Dual Decks are NOT going to impress you. When they do, it's a great surprise and you've never given any more thought to it or worked yourself up.
Lower your standards... you'll never be stressed about it. Then things impress, it makes it that much sweeter and special.

It's the addictive ink that they use on the cards. I can't get enough of it! And they use a different kind of ink on good cards than they use on the bad cards. Swords are amazing, but Ravenous Demons just don't have enough ink.
That's the secret to playing high-level tourney Magic - use the cards that have the most ink.

after discussing this with my non-mtg-playing girlfiend for some time, we decided that the helvault idea was actually really positive.
i'll explain why:
i've got a couple full sets of super-oversized basic lands from about 12 years ago. i can't ever play with them, but they are a really cool part of my collection and add to the experience of the game as a whole.
the oversized generals and these cards in the helvault - they fulfil a similar purpose, with the bonus of being a neat thing to use in EDH on occasion when your commander is in play.
for something that's free, part of the experience and a general bonus to going to the prerelease, i don't see how you can possibly complain. they are a bit of collector-candy, a bit of fun, a conversation piece, something to appreciate. don't get all riled up just because they didn't print another sword or some nonsense like that.
hell... i'll probably try to track down a bunch of these even though i don't play EDH. they're just that cool.

I seriously wonder why people think that EVERY thing that WOTC puts out has to speak directly to them on every level, and include tournament level reprints of things.
Because people want to feel like they are really a part of the whole enterprise? Because budget players would like to have opportunities to get good cards without having to empty their wallets? Because people like it when they spend a lot of money on something and get a meaningful reward from it?
I don't feel people are being unreasonable complaining about these things. Of course, Wizards/Hasbro is under no obligation. But they talk a lot about things like this, and then fail spectacularly in delivering on those promises.
Seriously, there are plenty of people who loved the products you listed. I may not be included in them, but they exist. First step in preventing disapointment by having this game as a hobby is to realise that side promotions like Helavault and products like Intro Decks and Dual Decks are NOT going to impress you.
As a regular purchaser of product, and a frequent player, yeah, I think these side products should, at the very least, give a little something to the frequent players. If you were a Magic noob, and you heard the experienced players complain about FTVs or Duel Decks, you'd get the idea that they care about new players, but, once you're in, you'll take what we give you and shut up and like it. Not a shining star here.
Besides, most experienced players KNOW that Intro decks (and, to a degree, Event decks) are explicitly NOT for them... So, hey, it'd be nice if some side products at least gave us a reason to get into the idea of buying them, instead of being utter garbage. FTV should always be this, but they have been inconsistent with it. The multiplayer products are reasonable, at least.
When they do, it's a great surprise and you've never given any more thought to it or worked yourself up.
The problem with this line of thinking is that, if we just shut up and accept the crap they put out, and live that optimistic, "Someday, they'll get with us," attitude, we'll be forever waiting, as there is no impetus for Wizards to actually give us that dream day. Squeaky wheels get greased; nonsqueaky ones must be just fine and get nothing.
Lower your standards... you'll never be stressed about it. Then things impress, it makes it that much sweeter and special.
Maybe it's my cynicism, but I don't see any of that here. My standards for the Helvault were already abysmal, but I was stunned and disappointed by just how abysmal Wizards made it AFTER ALL THEY HYPED IT TO BE.

You know, in any case, this is a prerelease event. Who is a prerelease for and who is it not for? The Helvault is a promotional prize. Who is going to win those prizes?
The point ultimately becomes this: We understand the Helvault has stuff in it that's "not for everybody." But, hey, if there's nothing in there for the majority of regular players, what incentive do they have to show up? They're more likely to discover its contents prior to the event. Yes, you have to market to new and casual players. But prereleases should be everybody's event. This would have been a great opportunity for the return of textless cards. There could have been special PLAYABLE promos of actual cards, or even, y'know, a nonfoil playable uncommon card with a special watermark or something. No. We get spin down dice, available, y'know, anywhere (ooh, the special symbol... whatever)... Alternate art tokens, which are only worth it to me because the regular Demon token is a turd with wings and a mouth... and oversized legendaries, which are only useful if A) you play EDH and B) you're making a deck for them. Seems like a very mediocre pool for an event they've been hyping for months.
Really, nothing for the regular players, unless they use those tokens (and care) or they belong to a subset of EDH players. That's not impressive at all. That's like offering "special" cheeseburgers and putting bacon on half of them, spitting on the rest, and then disproportionately serving the regular players the spit burgers. Thanks for doing everyone a favor, Wizards!

I was following you until this analogy. I don't really see how our food is being spat upon. Maybe it's more like offering special cheeseburgers, where the special part is that they have cilantro on them? Most people don't care about it, and a few people really like it.

A good analogy but to take it one step further it'd be like them doing that after first advertising to people a super special limited edition burger you had to pay for first but that you'd remember for years to come.
That's really my only beef (oh the puns) with WOTC on this whole debacle. They really made it sound like this would contain awesome promos we would like. I don't think most will like these promos though and I think they knew that. Sure it is free stuff and I'm sure some will love it... but I think it's a big stretch to say most people will be excited by the contents of this thing and as said before I expect wizards knew this but advertised it like everyone would love it anyway
I didn't pre-register for the tournament at my LGS, and I got an email yesterday saying that they were full. I was bummed at first, but after seeing the contents of the Helvault I am considerably less bummed. Possibly not even bummed at all.

So, you are saying that it isn't good enough that they print the booster packs for regular players. Or the Buy a box promos. Or the FNM promos. Or the Game Day promos. Or all the rest of the SPECTACULAR prize support for regular players. It just isn't enough? I suggest you put down Magic, and go play Yugioh competitively for a little while. You'll come crawling back BEGGING for forgiveness. Magic treats ALL of its players better than other games. Just because ONE promotion wasn't billed to the competitive crowd doesn't mean that they never do anything for you. The whole tournament structure and the Planeswalker points are geared for competitive players, not the casual players. Casual players don't have a snowball's chance in a volcano of pulling something off with those points. ONLY competitive players will benefit from them. This is for casual players. Players who otherwise likely wouldn't get a spin down. Players who collect angel and demon arts. Players who like tokens. Players who like SWAG. There are more of us happy about this than you want to consider. You are not within rights to complain. You are acting like a spoiled child. Please grow up. They hype was completely deserved. It is a once in a lifetime event. Just because some people online decided to make it sound so much better than it was going to be doesn't change the reality of the situation. Players hype. The wizards ads were well within guidelines. In reality, they could have hyped it MORE and still been good.
I can't believe I'm hearing people moan and groan about prize support in this game... Especially for the competitive crowd. What other active game has a $50,000 grand prize for a tournament!? Maybe it is just because I have perspective coming from another game.

The promotion is billed to people who don't know what is inside it.
I was hanging out with my causal play group the other day, and they where all excited about the helvault. I asked them if they knew what was in it, they said no, I told them. They decided they are going to go play heroclix this weekend instead.
If they want to excited the causuls they would have put a DFC werewolf legend in it.

A 40 dollar mythic rare would constitute a must have 4 of that goes in many decks.
Stats About Mythics
-Mythics are on average 40% rarer than pre-mythic rares
(old blocks about 200 rares, Mythic blocks 35+ mythics)
-They are printing more new cards a year not less
(about 665 now vs. 630 in most pre-mythic block)
-To drop the value of a rare by $1 a mythic must go up $2
-In a 3 year time span deck prices doubled. I am petitioning for the removal of mythic rarity. Sig this to join the cause.
Its like people on food stamps complaining and holding up the line because they cant get the name brand products. Oh, im sorry theres a problem with your FREE FOOD.

If by FREE FOOD you mean a piece of paper with a picture of a banana scribbled on it by a pre-schooler. Then your analogy is accurate.

Cue the Regular Show banana song.
Were already getting the usual free mediocre foil. Helvault is a marketing trick. At the end of the day, im there to play. All the crying over the trashvault is a little rediculous. Of course id like to see some promos of the legends or something thats not oversized, but give me my 3 or 4 round swiss and im ok.
This is not just a thread about complaining and griping about prize support, it's just the marketing. All the money and time that goes into making a Helvault was to hype up this set. There are no novels, webcomics, etc. to really show how the set unraveled, so doing a Helvault during prerelease sounds good... it was just very poorly executed.
I do understand why Wotc has done the things it's done:
1) Removal of mythic promos (to increase sales and to keep people excited about pulling a mythic rare)
2) Removal of drafts (because sealed is just more casual)
3) Using terrible prize support (as to not interfere with the *real* support prize. In other words, keeping casual players happy and getting them to spend money on the real thing).
Knowing this, it is a *huge* letdown, but I'm not going to AVR because of the gimmicky support, I'm going because of the social aspect of it. I mean it could be worse... you could be paying 30 dollars for terrible prize payout and playing the game a month after the set was actually released; nevermind you can..

And if I've offended you, I'm sorry, but maybe you need to be offended. But here's my apology and one more thing...

EDH is a CASUAL format. Get with the program, or GTFO.
Have you played ever other game?
The promotion is billed to people who don't know what is inside it.
I was hanging out with my causal play group the other day, and they where all excited about the helvault. I asked them if they knew what was in it, they said no, I told them. They decided they are going to go play heroclix this weekend instead.
If they want to excited the causuls they would have put a DFC werewolf legend in it.
