There are SO MANY THINGS RIGHT with this announcement.
I normally don't go for the non-Planeswalker duel decks... but this is actually the best possible kind of duel deck they could ever announce. I absolutely cannot wait.

Certainly interesting. Does this mean the guilds are returning? I thought they were disbanded.
The guilds still exist to an extent. Without a guildpact to bind them and dictate their roles, they're a lot more disorganized than they once were. The Boros are now hired hands and mercenaries rather than an organized army. The dimir are all but gone. However, I'd imagine that the Golgari remained relatively stable considering that their farming ecosystem would have been untouched by the events of the surface world. The Izzet are scientists with little political leaning, so I suppose it's business as usual for them too regardless of what happens to the world around them.
All in all, this duel deck sounds like a great idea. I think we'll have to get Jarad as a preview card though if we're going for a guildmaster vs. guildmaster theme. Savra and The Sisters of Stone Death are both dead, so they can't be used.
I really hope that these decks will boast their leaders as planeswalkers and not just legendary creatures.
Not happening, we already had 2 PW duel decks before this without a faction vs faction in between. This will be a faction vs faction unless wizards is screwing with us

Let's get things straight, this is a pretty damned SWEET anouncement.
But, knowing my luck, Jarad will be the one GB general I want to build an EDH deck around, but since he's a dude, that will most likely annoy the crap out of me. /le sigh. Bringing back some dredge (read: good dredge) cards would be damned sweet, I've wanted a "legacy" dredge deck for a while.
Hopefully the Izzet side has some good red stuff =P.
(Also, what's everyone's obsession with PW's? They cost a ----ton more money, and can't have a special deck built around them like Legendaries...)
Interesting that they went with Izzet vs. Golgari instead of Izzet vs. Selesnya. The Izzet clearly hated the Selesnya Conclave, as evidence in cards like Seed Spark and Electrolyze (look who's getting fried).
Still though, I am excited for this like most duel decks! Though that's easy to say given the previous clunker that was Koth vs. Venser.

Hopefully its a preview of the new sets and relationships therein.

My Clan Is Dead.... Long Live The Izzet! Johnny, born and raised. Always lookin' for the Next Level Combo. Thanks to Bornover of FHLS for the banner!
Neither Niv-Mizzet nor Jarad are planeswalkers. One's an intelligent narcissistic dragon and the other is an elf who reanimated himself.
Actually, Niv-Mizzet may be a planeswalker. In the Ravnica block novels, the Izzet communicate with one another and with Niv-Mizzet through The Firemind, a system Niv-Mizzet devised to link the minds of the Izzet together with him. This allowed him to accumulate knowledge very quickly. However, in one of the books, after batting a nephilim around for a while, he became injured and took off, saying he was "bored." After that, the Izzet found it impossible to contact Niv-Mizzet through the firemind. It was as if he had left the plane. Thus, he may have activated his spark or, short of that, devised some method of interplanar travel.
Upon disintegration of the Guildpact, what was left of the guilds decided to reinforce the
laws through less magical means. Instead of relying on an enchantment to uphold the
peace, they opted for physical reinforcement.
On topic, I am stoked for some Izzet and Golgari goodies!

Or, since he's one of the most brilliant mind in the Multiverse (I'm pretty sure his brain litteraly sparkles), he could have simply turned the Firemind off ? =/
Buddha bless us if these are as sucky as the last bunch of duel decks wizards has crapped out. I'm interested in what iconic stuff they're going to include... Please remand, gelectrode, bloodbond march.
I'm kinda hoping they don't go in the OBVIOUS direction of putting too many Izzet Cards from Guildpact and too many Golgari cards from Ravnica.
I trust Chris Millar and Mark Gottlieb to make this much more than just "Precon vs. Precon."
Seems pretty clear that Niv and Jarad will be the deck leaders, and that Jarad will be from RTR. Given how much Niv-Mizzet goes for these days, I'm hoping there aren't too many other chase cards in the decks.

Ditto, but right now I don't have any Niv-Mizzets so this could be a fun way to get one.
I'm sure we will get a preview of some kind.
