- FNM promos will instead be foil double-sided tokens. Also less per store.
- Standard showdown packs include foil land from magic's past (first up is a set of guay lands never before foiled)
- Game day replaced with Store Championship that will happen much later than game day did (near the next set release)
- Open house including full-art promo from upcoming set.
Not sure that I like these changes. It's interesting that they say FNM is going to have better promos, only to follow that with "also, the promos are tokens".
Game Day getting a name change? Fine, whatever. But scheduling it later? I assume this is to build hype for the following set? Right now, Game Day gives you just enough time to test and brew with the new cards. It's a test of creativity and adaptability, especially the first Game Day after a rotation. If they move it to the tail end of a set's life cycle, it gives plenty of time to just wait and see what the best/strongest decks will be.
This seems like an... odd change.
Am always happy to hear that Wizards are trying to improve things for their players. But making the FNM promos tokens seems like a waste to me. Tokens are fine and all, but losing actual promo cards with the unique art is a loss. Sure some promos were never great, but there are quite a number that were amazing with really beautiful art.
In fact I would sometime decide to go to an extra FNM just to try and get a promo. Now the promos are going to be tokens I feel like that will happen less often, at least for me.
With the change to Game Day seems like it should be good. The inclusion of added prizes is nice, even if the prize is just a deck box. But it does means that there won't actually be any full art promos from Ixalan. As the promos for the Ixalan "Game Day" will be from Rivals of Ixalan. Nothing wrong with that I guess.
Man, do I not care about tokens. It doesn't matter how cool the token is. It can't compete with the practicality of dice, or with the coolness of little toys. Your foil tokens will never be as flavorful as my little rubber ninjas.
They clearly recognize that people like Rebecca Guay, but until they start putting better art in normal packs, I'll not forgive them for their constant artistic suppression. Their uniform style is so damn boring that it becomes extremely hard to find any remarkable art from the last several years. It's all well done and realistic, and none of it is memorable. I'm not saying anything here that hasn't been said before, but I won't stop complaining unless they address the issue.
I am not a fan of this change. I go to FNM's ocasionally to see friends and to pick up nice foils on the side. As I told the Olive on Twitter, getting a set of a good foil took about a night's work, maybe two. Now that there are basic lands...you need several basic lands for a deck, and even more for an EDH deck. Am I supposed to go to a ton of FNM's around town to get these? Terrible ideas, just leave the program as is, or at least give us the Player Rewards program back. Would Iike to add I do not care about tokens at all, so I will pass, HARD pass, on those.

Nah
Basic lands will be placed on those Standard Showdonw boosters.
The promos for FNM are now just Double sided promo tokens
What a waste. Are they trying to kill FNM? Fewer prise cards with little or no value. You can't even put a token in a deck. Now that is a winner. Eliminating real FNM promos is a step down. With in demand FNM card like Fatal Push and Aether Hub they were on the right track, but now the incentive is a pointless tokens and fewer of them? That is not incentive. Other than the fact I love the game why in the world would I even bother? Even a random common not even a promo would be better as at least I theoretically could play magic with enough of them.
I am not happy about this change. This is going to hurt FNM and it was the best place to play. They aren't trying to fix anything or they aren't at least going to. Yes, most FNM promos were a joke, but this is a new low. I mean most tokens literally get tossed after a draft. You can pick them up for free in most cases. I only know of one person that was excited by the two sided zombie tokens and 20 people just handed their tokens to him as they didn't want them. At least they didn't try to pass them off as a prise to be won.
The other changes I will reserve judgment on. But if they are in the same line of thought ase nerfing FNM support I am skeptical at best. Who really thinks tokens are an incentive to play? I can get all the tokens I want from the trash after a draft. So FNM is now reduced to a game store dumpster dive as a prise? I don't get why they think that would work to drive participation. I really don't.
I don't care at all about double sided tokens. Such trash, but I bet a lot of players will come out for shiny Aether Hub (I did) and special shiny Fatal Push. Absolutely wrong move.
Bumping game day is also bloody horrible. So they want to wait until the format is completely solved (and sometimes stale) to have 'game day'?
Makes no sense at all. If anything they could have added an additional event to keep people 'engaged' and give away a new set card. I really enjoy current game day because you basically can roll in with a brew and win or do well after only getting a little pro input to viable decks. Bad move. Now it's all clone decks.
Open house and showdown are fine. Do they think very hard about these changes or is everything seat of the pants trash?
Well this sucks. Hopefully they'll be alternate art tokens like the league ones and not just foil versions of normal ones like the 2sided zombie token in SOI
"Hey some people are still playing even though we ruined standard for years. How do we get rid of them?"
"Let's say we are upgrading promos and then just give them tokens! Then we'll be able to dig under the stores for spanish dubloons!" (They are scooby doo villains for purposes of this board meeting)
I would really like to know how that discussing in the R&D meeting went ...
Like :
"Should be remove alternate art promos from FNM?"
"Hell yea, i never win them anyway."
"So that nobody is salty for not winning them, we better make sure they are not playable cards."
"Why not make them tokens? So nobody is happy at all!"
"Fantastic idea, but to further reduce the chance to get one, we better ship less of them too."
...
Seriously wtf is WotC even thinking ?
Especially if they write some joke of a statement like they thought about this change ...
Very bad decision.
----
Foil tokens arent a bad idea, they should simply make the token in the booster packs randomly foil, just like regular cards, instead of messing with FNM promos that actually got people excited if its a "real" magic card that matters.
Theres plenty of people that play FNM simply because the FNM promo is actually worth something.
Tokens are just random garbage, theres people that like them, but these are in the absolute minority.
Zombie tokens got a big boost as people needed a lot of them to play the Zombie constructed deck, and some effects put a ton of them in play (especially Liliana).
So what people REALLY wanted are foil tokens, so the reasonable step would be to put foil tokens in the boosters and everyone would be happy.
Wizards going full retard. How the hell this is an upgrade? Yeah FNM is already dead here in town and the Fatal Push and Aether Hub promos were good incentive to try to get people to play it but these changes basically killed it. Only Casual commander and ocasional 1v1 commander fo here an now.
Stupid changes. How stupid you have to be to make these? Couldn't they have just added these tokens to the prizes instead of downright replacing cards?

Inappropriate language warning
Is that where they give out free "starter" decks to first time players? If so, I was once told by an LGS tbey would not give them to established players. So how does that work?
Is that where they give out free "starter" decks to first time players? If so, I was once told by an LGS tbey would not give them to established players. So how does that work?
They contain nothing of real value, but they are ment to teach a new player how the game works.
If an experienced player does that job, they "usually" get one too for free (and depending on the store something extra to get a new potential customer to the store).
Who actually thinks that foil double sided tokens is better than new art promos?
WHO?
Which of them thinks that tokens will get people to WANT to play standard???
And how is fewer promos better for getting people to come out and play.
A 10 year old could do a better job with marketing than their team. Dropping small sets is seriously the only thing they've done right. At all.
The second is a move to foil double-sided tokens from the then-current set rather than foil cards from recent Standard-legal sets. We're hoping foil double-sided tokens offer something different and exciting. The player response has been very positive toward the recent foil Zombie tokens and the Thopter/Servo tokens, and they keep asking us for more venues in which we can give these out. We think players will find these rewards interesting and a fun reward for playing.
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha! Oh good one Wizards, you nearly had me going there. People who, ahaha, prefer double-faced tokens over some cool promos, ohohoho great joke, you almost got me believing...
