Yeah... I'm a bit underwhelmed. This seems to be mainly a EDH card: you won't be tapping 3-5 merfolks in Modern, unless it's to attack. Might see play in standard, if Merfolks get more token producers.
Not sure if it has a place in Merfolk in Modern, but it would be cool to see it there.

Looks like this set we get the no-brainer tribal legendedns for merfolk and vampires. Doesn't seems that powerful but at three mana he is out and be unlock able pretty fast.

Could at least have white (bant GWU) to be a good commander for merfolks.
I thought we would se a really powerful merfolk here, but he is at best a card for sideboard in merfolks(modern) and maybe a commander. Could have been that end game or taxing merfolk people need
My gawd does this seems powerful !
Unblockable with Power 2 isnt something to brag about, but the other abilities sure are !
Im amazed by this card, however Merfolk still needs more. But cant be a better start than this d:)

Yep that looks like the case
Of coarse depending on what zacama colors are and does might be two options for dinosaurs.

Breaking set flavor just to please commander players is exaclty what should NEVER be done. Even within set flavor it's mostly bad: f.e. Ulrich was a waste of card slot made only because of edh crying voices. Get edh specific legends through commander sets.
This is a big ole meh for me. Not saying he's necessarily bad I just don't really care about him. He's definitely not a 60 card format guy. Because you'd probably just rather be attacking with those guys you're tapping. The last ability can act as a Gavony Township to help break commander board stalls.

We will get a bant merfolk someday
Just not here because I'm pretty sure they are going to refuse to leave the UG merfolks only in ixalan.
I'm happy he costs 3 mana and he's a 2/4. He's not some chump who's going to bite the dust to your good old lightning bolt. He's got neat abilities but you need a lot of merfolk 5o get him rolling. Here's to hoping there's some good merfolk token producers as well as maybe some Seedborn Muse type of card for your Merfolk.
This is beautiful to me. He makes such a wonderful commander for Merfolk in EDH. Sure he isn't bant colors, but I'll live. I love what you said, Ryperior74, he IS great with Paradox Engine!
Pretty cool for a merfolk edh deck. I just wish the first and last effect would be a bit better. The card draw seems to be clearly the best out of his abilities. Sweet synergie with fallowsage, I'm actually considering trying Kumena out in edh.
I'm SO SICK of the "too strong for Standard" argument. It's the new "Dies to removal". We can have a two mana 4/4 with a zillion abilities, but we can't just have Accumulated Knowledge. Makes sense.
Another reason to assemble a Bant Merfolk deck. A 2/4 for 1GU alone is pretty good. It would be silly with Stonybrook Schoolmaster, Drowner of Secrets and Intruder Alarm. Then, with Darting Merfolk, maybe that enchantment that makes 1/1 hexproof merfolk whenever you cast a merfolk spell.

So instead of swarming elves, they are going swarming hexproof unblockable merfolk. Merfolk version of Dwynen's Elite and Elvish Visionary anyone? The only thing that makes them sub-optimal is the lack of a good one drop mana dork. Yes, I'm not letting this go, can they please give us a one mana merfolk tribal Elvish Mystic. It doesn't even need to be a full on dork, just something that does "Tap: Add one blue mana to your mana pool, spend this only to cast merfolk spells".

On the topic of the card... this guy has the potential to be bonkers. Excellent tribal synergy, nice stat line that dodges relevant removal, and tap abilities without a symbol that are just begging to be broken. Watch out for this one.
This is the card I was most excited for in RIX; since reading about Kumena in the story months ago, I've been counting down to January, unusually eager to meet him. Even if he sucked, I had a slot open in my merfolk deck waiting for him.
And I'm thrilled with this. Not only is he good, and with better stats than most merfolk, but he has the potential to be absolutely insane.
My one nitpick, from a flavor perspective -- Kumena is a merfolk leader, true, but he broke from his people to find Orazca; he came alone and is acting alone. This card depends on other merfolk being with him, and as much as I like his abilities, I might prefer abilities that convey Kumena's independence.
Still, I'll give him a very solid 4 out of 5, with a 5 out of 5 potential.

Not sure about the other two, as Merfolk have plenty of cheap lords and ways to force islands on people for islandwalk.

A Commander/EDH format that restricts you to cards with converted mana cost 3 or less, which Kumena is.
