They might have done it after so many years, a phoenix powerful and playable from the get-go. It might not be better than hazoret right away, but if rdw is around after rotation, this is basically guaranteed to take her place. Also love the art on this one. Feels strange to say this but... you did good on this one wizards.
I'm SO SICK of the "too strong for Standard" argument. It's the new "Dies to removal". We can have a two mana 4/4 with a zillion abilities, but we can't just have Accumulated Knowledge. Makes sense.
I'm glad it doesn't have initial cast haste. There's a LOT of haste out there right now without this one to help.
4/3 is super solid with relevant return ability. Exile is going to be king for a while. Got all your Vraska's Contempt?

And that's why I personally believe we should get more settings where they just hold it on the Dragons.

Planar Chaos was not a mistake neither was it random. You might want to look at it again.
[thread=239793][Game] Level Up - Creature[/thread]
The only thing I don't get is why they didn't just give the original creature haste. This is potentially a very powerful card, but it can be dealt with. I think this is a great example of a playable mythic that isn't stupid overpowered.
playable in limited. Like every other phoenix they make, unplayable in constructed.
In what world? It's 4 damage a turn on a difficult to deal with body.

You don't call "dying to removal" if the removal is more expensive in resources than the creature. If you have to spend BG (Abrupt Decay), or W + basic land (PtE) to remove a 1G, that is not "dying to removal". Strictly speaking Goyf dies to removal, but actually your removal is dying to Goyf.

It's the best pheonix I've seen in a while, but I think the price will probably cool down once pre-orders are done. Right now Hazoret, the Fervent is still the main four drop with Chandra, Torch of Defiance, so most of the price spiking is from the set being under-ordered. Also, yes the set was under-ordered for pre-order season so prices are going to be hilarious on the mythics, hence why I've basically avoided all the mythics in the set like the plague until the release hits.
Also, the set has only been revealed for a little while and they already have cute custom art tokens for the 0/1 creature on ebay.

3. (War of the Spark): Lets make the format with control have even more control!
Looks pretty good, but I'm not a fan of the artwork. It kinda looks like the bird is made of paper.
It looks more like an owl than a traditional bird of prey as well, which is kind of unusual for a phoenix since they are usually related to the concept of the sun. Using a nocturnal predator like an owl as the basis works better if it was some kind of ice or moon bird. In greek legend the phoenix was a song bird that bewitched the sun god Apollo so much with it's song that he rode his flaming chariot into the birds nest and started a conflagration. Unfortunately, this kind of nuked the phoenix, but thankfully in the pyre a little birdling stirred and it grew to become a new phoenix. Also technically there should only be one phoenix at a time so the bird should be legendary.
Then again, we've taken so many liberties with our myths and legends across the last twenty or so years we now have a Japanese Female King Arthur, multiple variations of Hercules, an African American Dracula, and don't get me started on Persona because that would take a novella to get through all the madness with Shin Megami Tensei. Yes, I'm a lover of old mythology. (Looks over and realizes that Fate: Grand Order exists) Oh Japan, will your madness ever cease with gender bending.

Owls are very symbolic in latino culture relating to death. Growing up I was always told witches would come back from the dead as owls to continue doing evil magic, in the book Bless me, Ultima, the character of Ultima is a white witch with her soul taking the form of her familiar and may latino people believe in a folk goddess (or saint or angel) called Santa Muerte who symbols include owls.

I'll need to look that up because that sounds really interesting. It's also making me think they may have short changed themselves making it a phoenix. An ominous self reviving owl bird that lives in the shadows of the eternal sun sounds poetic considering how many people are basically fighting and killing each other over an artifact they will never get a hold of. A phoenix is more a symbol of continuity and hope.

It just depends on context. Owls are linked with magic and death both of which can be seen as good or evil. Ixalan has harpies with owl features who are followers of demons who are thought to have been sirens who have been corrupted (from the art book).
Also since as stories and myth blend and change I encourage you to look up more. I was giving what my family stories had on them, but latino cultures can have a lot of differences due to the number of different backgrounds. I've grown up hearing one story of La Llorona but its different from a few of my latino friends.

It's actually a surprisingly good mid range creature, but it really needed that fourth point of toughness to make it solid. A four drop that dies to many three drops and red removal with a low powered recursive ability is rough. Also the amount of pinging going on in this format is going to make the token an easy target.

Yeah it seems like a limited beast, but I'm not sure how much of an impact it's going to have on standard or other constructed sets. The haste is decent though, but too many answers in the format.

To be frank it feels like a rare that got shifted to mythic strictly because of limited. I actually really like the card as it feels comparable to something like Thunderbreak Regent, just WoTC feels like they've been printing weaker cards as a whole recently. The commons are definitely far better this push than prior sets, though.

It's definitely better than any other phoenix mythic that they've tried to push in the past. This set may have some underrated gems that sit around for a while, not just in the commons.
Its pretty much just a 4/3 flyer, still has to compete against the other good 4 drops we have, but it might just make the cut in red decks, as this at least demands an extra removal after it blocks or double removal to kill it and the token (or just exile it etc.).
Its decent, but its still strange that it doesnt have haste right away, that would make it unquestionable "good" , as it is, it still has to compete against the very very strong 4 mana slot of red decks.
I'm doing a brew with Slaughter the Strong and Cataclysmic Gearhulk that uses it and it's definitely playable. It's still really hard to compete with some decks, but white and red got some good additions this push.
