• The story picks up after Hour of Devastation. Gideon and Liliana have fled to Dominaria, where they're trying to kill Liliana's last demon. Chandra also appears in the story.
• Said demon, Belzenlok, is the leader of the Cabal (yes, that Cabal), which has returned to power.
Besides the members of the Gatewatch—Gideon, Liliana, and Chandra—you’ll see Jhoira, Teferi, and Karn, plus a few others who make surprise appearances along the way. I don’t want to spoil too much!
Chandra too?
Also Jhoira, Teferi and Karn confirmed! hopefully we see some new cards for some of them.
It took me a bit of research to remember why the name seems familiar. It's her association with Stargate I think.
I never read any of her books but reading up their synopsis, it's pretty clear why they brought her on board. Martha Wells books appear to have pretty detailed societies.
It might be a good thing if they can get her to stick around for more than a year. I'm sorry guys, but WotC stories tend to read like high school fanfics. It's hard to get past a paragraph or two without passing out from all the cringing that happens.
It's too bad they'll keep their prized Planeswalkers. Magic can allow an infinite number of planes so it would behoove WotC to introduce side stories or sets that really don't have their main characters appearing. Hitler may get all the attention for WWII but his isn't the only story.

So everyone can then complain that creative is wasting story time on filler stories/characters who we won't see until the return set?
Side storylines and such are being told in the supplement sets, like Conspiracy or Commander, as well as core sets being used for background/set up for the major storyline (i.e. all of nahiri backstory before SoI could have been the storyline of a core set).
“There are no weak Jews. I am descended from those who wrestle angels and kill giants. We were chosen by God. You were chosen by a pathetic little man who can't seem to grow a full mustache"
"You can tell how dumb someone is by how they use Mary Sue"
I can't believe they are doing yet another Gatewatch story for Dominaria. I don't get it. 25 years of magic and all we get is this failure over and over.

I personally think Conspiracy and Commander are rather poor avenues for side stories... OK... maybe not Conspiracy but certainly Commander. I have not heard anything story related for the upcoming Core sets so no comment on that yet, but I do not believe they will be PW free.
In any case, it doesn't really matter what WotC will do. They can literally place $20 bills in each pack and a coupon for a free novel of your choice from Amazon and people will complain it sucks.

Speak for yourself. I actually enjoy the characters of the Gatewatch and Planeswalkers being the lens through which we explore the multiverse. There is nothing to complain about from what we know so far about the return trip to Dominaria, as we are having a meeting of both New AND Old magic here, Weatherlight meets Gatewatch.
I'm kind of sick of the all the complaining. Yes there was much good in the Old stories and some weaknesses in the New but even just reading and trying to sort out Old magic the gathering stories informs me that the storytelling was imperfect then too; lots of continuity issues, author vanities, character inconsistencies and tired tropes as well.
Each period of Magic Storytelling is a reflection of its time. If things stayed the same, cardwise or lorewise, the game would die.
What the announcement is telling fans however is that the company accepts that the stories of Magic the Gathering deserves a higher quality of writing than it received in the past. Magic's story team has done their best but they're stretched thin and TBH they aren't and shouldn't have to be professional writers. They are World- and Arc-builders, and that's ok.
The meeting of both Amateur and Professional writers and storytellers is something that ought be celebrated just as the meeting of Old and New MTG, because like it or not, sometimes the amateur writers understand us fans better than the Professional, the Sophisticated.
They just can't always express it quite as well. I like Doug and his team, I am happy they are getting allies.

Look I am not asking for them to create fantastic stories. I am asking them to respect the lore of magic, specially when they are doing a 25th anniversary product. Whats the big deal of having just once, JUST ONCE, a story without a gatewatch character? why Jace has to be in every single plane. Let it rest. People got tired of them, and it clear that imposing them didn't work. I wonder if the weatherlight saga had the same number of resources and difussion what would have happened. Urza is absolutely loved by all fans, and thats not the case for Jace, netiher for the gatewatch.
Imagine if the gatewatch used to be the biggest lore storyline and suddenly they bring something new and they try to make you forget about the previous story. No one would like it. I dont want static storylines, I want for once to feel like they care about the legacy, the work done before them and not just one new story burying the previous.

When did they try to make anyone forget about the previous stories? I've seen a number of nods and shout-outs in recent times to older characters and events, some of which I had to actually look up to understand.
Also, since when did a saga about a group of self-made heroes who only recently formed said group equate to a static storyline? The Gatewatch story isn't going to be around forever, and I reckon that just like the older Weatherlight crew, it'll be replaced eventually.
From zendikar to now, how many of the old characters appeared? Nicol Bolas is almost the only one to have. The rest was dead until this set, no ties at all, no connection to the past. They could of course have included them, after all they were the core of the story of magic. They could have nodded the stories between them. You don't need a set in rabiah for that, or a new masques block, you can just blend them, the only example I can think of this is Tamiyo, otherwise they stick to the native planeswalker with no ties with the rest of the multiverse. Its interconection what makes this interesting, and thats what the weatherlight was able to do.

I think it's worth mentioning that the Multiverse is supposed to be near-infinite. The older stories not being acknowledged at every given opportunity isn't necessarily a bad thing because not everyone in-Multiverse knows or cares that these stories existed.
You understand that they invent the story, dont you? they choose what to show. If the multiverse is infinite then why do we get the same cast of gatewatch characters? you can't justify with lore how lore is created, it makes no sense. Its a real world decision. They have chosen not to aknowledge the past of the game, for whatever reason. However yhey could with very small resources make those nods. They don't care, they sell products, its just that. How diffcult can it be to include old wlakers that could still be alive sometimes here or there, or to include new characters that make references to old places, like say Ral Zarek is from wildfire. Its details, what makes a polished and consitent story great and interconnected.

Here's my point of view on this:
If they say the Multiverse is vast, and that's been a statement for a long time, that ought to be shown. If they kept showcasing the same characters or planes, I wouldn't consider that an improvement, as it makes the whole thing feel small. Dominaria could maybe get away with this from a lore point of view because it's the "nexus" of the Multiverse, and everything that happens there affects everywhere else, but if it or other planes that the story has visited before never get mentioned for years at a time, I'd be fine with that given the whole concept of the Multiverse.
In the current situation, we have two major concurrent plotlines: The Gatewatch's drive to defeat Nicol Bolas, and Karn's drive to address the new Phyrexian menace. These two involve only a handful of planes between them, and I wouldn't complain if we don't see any returns or major references to planes like Ravnica, Zendikar and Innistrad for a long time after Bolas's invasion of Ravnica is either completed or repelled.
That said, a number of the Commander and Planechase products, some of Tamiyo's tales in Shadows of Innistrad block and this very set demonstrate that they aren't above giving nods here and there to older lore or planes, or involving it in the story proper on special occasions.
It is a weatherlight crew and it is Jaya. It was confirmed in the podcast interview. She also mentions a new angel and a vampire as part of the crew. See thats nodding with old lore. They somewhat did this win Azor. My point is that if they dont do this its very difficult to not feel like magic was rewashed after time spiral. If they start including this kind of stuff, then it will make a more coherent story that interconnects with the previous lore.
By the gods the boohooing and entitlement in this thread is unbelievable. They spent more than half of Magics's history on Dominaria in the same story. Lord forbid they try amd so something else that not only keeps with the current story but harkens back to the old stories. Not everyone is a fan of Urza. As a matter of fact the majority of magic players probably aren't as the majority are newer players who weren't around for the early stuff. I started in RTR. I don't give a damn about Urza. The shoutouts and callbacks are cool and all but I wouldn't miss them if they weren't there. Nothing satisfies you people.
"I want old magic back!"
-"k here's Jaya, Jhoira, Karn, Teferi all on Dominaria fighting the cabal with the Gatewatch."
"Gatewatch! No this is awful now WotC why do you hate everything good?"
Seriously people. Chill out, let them tell the story they want to tell. If you don't like it don't like it go read something else or go tell the story you want told.
I have been waiting for the glorious return of Jaya Ballard for years! I was afraid they'd just sort of kill her off out of sight, with just hints like Pyromancer's Goggles here and there. But if Chandra's gonna be in this too, I really hope she and Jaya have some Korra/Old-Toph style interactions. That would be amazing.
Karn and Jhoira being around explain how there could be another ship like the Weatherlight; Jhoira's the only one who remembers Tolarian artifice, and Karn literally knew the ship better than anyone else. Though it probably won't be capable of interplanar travel like the original, given what Wizards has said about them wanting to keep planeswalkers special. Still, a new Weatherlight crew will be a great foil for a reborn Cabal stretching its influence across the globe. They're setting up a lot of good elements here, now we just have to see how they're handled.

Cheeseburger, french fries, chocolate shake, somebody's mind I's about to take!
I am surprised at the number of people who are shocked that the Gatewatch is going to cross paths with figures from Dominaria. This is a good thing. Once we establish that they cross paths, it is much easier for WOTC to make cards that reference Dominaria and the old lore. It feels like Wizards is finally interested in marrying these two storylines rather than keeping them apart at a distance like they have over the past decade (with the exception of Karn's tales). It could be the start of something great, or the start of nothing interesting -- why not give it a year? Then we'll know.
Plus, complaining about new lore versus old lore quality wise is splitting hairs. Even though I personally enjoyed pre-Gatewatch character lore more, none of these stories are that far off from a fan fiction writer who got an online degree. It's always amateur storytelling in print. If you want good story telling, there's plenty out there.
The story just through the cards is at times more intriguing because you get to put it together in your mind instead of... Going through just some terrible dialogue or muddled action writing.

Makes sense to focus on an Otarian story thread tbh, they've always said most of Dominarian history is too rich to return to.
Or maybe since Masterpieces will likely return for Dominaria, Akroma and Phage can have a spot

So did Liliana name lie to bolas? It seems she still on team gatewatch if she's with Gideon trying to take out the final demon
And if you read the last story of ixalan she failed to mention Jace is there on dominaria as well
In fact not only Jace found Gideon and Gideon thrilled jace survived that bolas attack he may have landed on the weatherlight 2.0 and met jaya.
