Things that deal damage but don't call for a target will not receive errata, with one exception in Vial Smasher the Fierce.
I'm still very confused why they singled out Vial Smasher, out of all cards in magic to give errata that makes her worse? It's not like they're reprinting her in the immediate future, since she references commander rules and so they'll only print her in commander products. I do assume that means that she'll be the 4-color deck printed in the next Commander Anthology though.
I am not looking forward to having to randomly select from a pool of 17 things to hit instead of 4. If this doesn't say "opponents planeswalkers" at least, I also have some free Vial Smashers to give away.
I want details, too. Vial Smasher was great because you could burn your opponents down. Who cares that they have five planeswalkers when I throw lethal at their face? If I now have to randomly dilute my damage among their planeswalkers, WOTC just nerfed the deck. I vote no errata to Vial Smasher - keep it opponents only.

In its desire to always be correct and consistent, Magic's rules templating has always opted for the Chicago Manual of Style's method of referring to a person of unknown gender: "he or she." Or "him or her" or "his or her."
There are a lot of reasons not to like those phrases. For me, the problems are that they take up a lot of words and that no one actually talks that way. People use the singular "they" all the time conversationally, and as language changes, the rules of proper usage have relaxed enough that we're comfortable switching to it now. Hooray!
What's not hooray-worthy, unfortunately, is that there aren't any cards in Duel Decks: Elves vs. Inventors that use the new template. But as an example, check out the current and future text for Duress.
Current:
Target opponent reveals his or her hand. You choose a noncreature, nonland card from it. That player discards that card.
Dominaria Oracle update:
Target opponent reveals their hand. You choose a noncreature, nonland card from it. That player discards that card.
And if this change, in addition to saving words, makes our card text more inclusive for people that don't identify as either a "he" or a "she," that's super awesome as well.
*rolls eyes*
It's obvious the intent wasn't that and people just had to latch onto it and push it as an agenda-filled move when it was always obvious they did it solely because it makes cards less wordy than they needed to be. So of course Wizards now has to pat themselves on the back over including wording that makes helicopters feel involved.
In any case, the intent SHOULD have been to make the text more inclusive, and then, if it makes it shorter, well that's super awesome as well.
Presenting something fundamental, such as being respectful and inclusive, as a kind of aftertought, is a bit lame, but hey, better than nothing I suppose.

In this case they are "including" a group that downplays a real group (actual transgender individuals) that has medical science backing them up so that they can pretend that they are a gender that doesn't exist or aren't one at all because they want to feel special too. It's ok for them to be an afterthought.
How many planeswalkers do your opponents usually have in play? Is everyone at your table playing superfriends?
Even just one screws the math up quite a bit. I have no desire to deal 9 points of damage to some crappy Jace.
Also, the strong implication from the article is that my own planeswalkers may be at risk, which is hopefully not true.
Agreed on the first point. It's stupid, and I may no longer play Vial Smasher - it was already difficult, but this stupid errata nerfs the general and makes it less fun.
On the second point, one would hope it would be erratad to "an opponent or planeswalker controlled by an opponent at random" or similar. It would be absolutely idiotic to make it burn your own walkers - you can't attack your own, and the redirection rule only ever applied to opponents, not yourself.
Okay discussions on what genders do and do not exist or whether someone considers themselves to have a gender at all is completely off topic. Agender and Genderfluid are accepted real identities. Whatever your personal feelings on the matter, how someone identifies themselves doesn't affect you, so drop it.

You are aware that grammatically it is ambiguous which of the two groups you are demeaning. Maybe something you should think about.

I don’t understand all the lashing out over change, but then I’ve never really been able to empathize with the conservative mindset. Magic has been growing, generally for the better, for 25 years now. The new frames look good. The delineation between rules and flavor text is refreshing. Cleaning up the language has positive repercussions beyond the obvious. And, at the end of the day, nobody is forcing you to buy cardboard. Star Wars Destiny and Ashes are both fine games in their own right, if you feel the need to escape from all the needless political banter here. Otherwise, “do unto others” are words to live by.
This targeting rule is extremely inconsistent and provides far greater opportunities for confusion and feel bad than the status quo. They traded a lot to fix one simple problem. Now your opponent will have to reveal their intentions when they cast a spell. No more wondering if they plan to redirect.I don't think it was worth it.
Reading through the article, it seems clear that we should not expect cards like Blightning to receive errata, but apparently they will.
"Blightning deals 3 damage to target player or planeswalker. That player or that planeswalker’s controller discards two cards."
Why can't Sudden Impact say this then:
"Sudden Impact deals damage to target player or planeswalker equal to the number of cards in that player's hand or that planewalker's controller's hand."
And then the arbitrary Vial Smasher errata that's being hinted at? This is not just an EDH card.
Now we just have a solution to a minor problem, brutal inconsistencies, and imaginary line (starting with Dominaria) after which cards with the exact same printed text as Lightning Bolt can't damage planeswalkers. It's not as confusing as the creature type erratas, but it's so much more impactful to normal game play. I promise there was a better way to do this.
I guess it's cool that my Alpha Lightning Bolts will now have proper Oracle text...
EDIT: All other changes are inconsequential. I just don't like this one because it makes it harder to play/teach/learn my favorite game.
Playing since 1994: Currently MAGS (HomeBrew),Standard & Pauper (Pioneer and Modern are degenerate trash formats)

Margaret Thatcher: “The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.”

Martin Luther King Jr.: "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character."
I share your concern, and hope they address it soon. This rule change will probably lead to a ridiculous amount of clunky errata. That MTG app better be kept up to date so I can look up stuff like this.
You don't need an app, necessarily. You can just look it up on the Gatherer.
I know that Gatherer is a thing. The point was that this app will likely run better on my phone than Gatherer does.
Moving on...if they haven't said it yet, I'd be curious as to how many cards will need this errata. The sheer number of cards needing errata has me dreading the change. At some point, it may be tough to remember what spells were printed before or after the change...oh I hate it.

The temple art is nice! The lists are decent, I might pick one up for EDH purposes if the values hold up. If not, I'll just get the newly cheapened singles I want. The new frame is decent. It isn't as drastic as I expected, but I think that's fine.

I may be the only one feeling that way here, but I REALLY dislike the new legendary frame. The top black border is eating too much of the colored part beneath, making them less colourful than their "non legendary" counterparts. Also the pattern is distracting, it looks oddly asymmetrical to me.
Super underwhelming. And apparently it's gonna stick for a long time...

I don't love it, but about the only aesthetic changes I've actually liked was the 1st change to modern card frames (except for artifacts - I liked the old brown) and the change to colorless mana having a distinct symbol. I'm sure none of us will notice in a year.
Man. I am just not on board with the visual changes. To me it feels like they are doing this for Arena, not paper magic. I’ve been thinking about it - so many visual changes have come down the pipe lately. And now, the latest being the new border and the flavor text divider.
For 25 years we haven’t needed such things. So why now? Well, I imagine that in Arena there is far less communication just like in MTGO. you don’t verbalize what you’re casting so you (or your opponent) is totally reliant on visual cues to recognize the board state. A focus on Arena is the only way that I can justify the gaudy look of legends and the cramped flavor text divider.
I don't like the visual "flair" added for legendary. It looks like they used some cheap craft scissors pattern. Wtf. There are better proxy designs out there. Hire a common IG proxy maker to design the next border change.

I'm indifferent on the new frame but I do agree on your second point. Some people put forward some sharp ideas, and frames. I think it would've been awesome to see the old boarder as a Masterpiece-Eske promo on the legendary cards, as a homage to the old story line or as a throwback to older magic.
I think the two decks don't know what they are supposed to be doing. Elves looks like they had a split decision between elf ball and just big creature ramp while the inventor deck looks okay outside of equipment.
I would have wanted to see priest of titania and huntmaster in the elf deck over some of the other choices.

Yeah, I agree. That's been in need of a reprint for ages. It has no reason to be over $10. Personally, I was hoping that Rhys the Redeemed would be the face of the elf deck (mainly because he is also desperately in need of a reprint), but...oh well.
Other than that, the new legendary frame looks neat, but I don't like the mana change, and I have mixed feelings about the burn spell change. While getting rid of the planeswalker redirection rule was good, "any target" sounds like Alpha wording to me, and some of them definitely don't make sense hitting planeswalkers (such as Blightning). Nerfing player hexproof isn't nice either.
You can now split the damage from multiple-target burn spells
Since you redirected damage from a player to a planeswalker, your choices were always to redirect all the damage or none of it. If your opponent had a Liliana on 1 and you had a Forked Bolt, you couldn’t deal 1 damage to the Liliana and 1 damage to them—it was always either 2 damage to the Liliana or zero. Now, Forked Bolt will read “Forked Bolt deals 2 damage divided as you choose among one or two targets,” which means that you can kill the Liliana and deal the leftover damage to the player, or even deal 1 point of damage to each of two different planeswalkers.
