AJANIIIII! We hardly knew ya! Welp, I was hoping we'd actually get a stronger Ajani focus soon, but that doesn't seem to be possible now. Who's our new white walker?
Well I always thought Ajani was the most likely to die against Bolas so I wonder if that is a spoiler or just a reference to their fight on Alara....
Considering the surroundings, the fact that this set is touching on Bolas's exploits in the past and the fact that Avatars are involved, I'm going with Alara fight.
Oh my heart. Okay.
This would be great news if it's confirmed that it's that moment.

It all seems to be the Alara final battle, but in that moment Ajani didn’t have Elspeth’s cape as shown in this art... I wonder if this could happen in this set... if so I will mourn because we will never get a Naya Ajani hahaha but we’ll see
Why jumping to conclusion of Ajani dying??
This is the Alara story. Bolas is sucking up the Conflux and Ajani is about to stop him. That was the story right? Dont understand why its being confused with something new.

While it certainly looks like they're fighting above the Maelstrom, it also appears like Ajani is wearing Elspeth's cape...
I'd be pretty pissed if the first fleshed out PW they end up killing is a non-human one.
I... uh... Elspeth? Does her death completely not count because the story arc suggests that she'll eventually be resurrected?
Venser was also well fleshed out as a non-planeswalker character in Time Spiral block.
I understand everyone's grievances that there aren't "enough" 'walkers who aren't Humans, but at the same time, Creative is probably gonna mostly create characters that are their own species. Because... it's just in our nature.
Yeah that seems to be Elspeth Cape, but I am pretty sure this is Alara (with the Cape an error or because it looks cool). They would not kill Ajani in a Core Set, which has no new story. And I am pretty sure, that Core Sets do not have story spotlights.
As Ajani Goldmane he does have a cape, but a smaller one. (He doffs it as Ajani Vengeant but only because, presumably, Naya is very hot and humid.) I suppose there might have been a slight art error here suggesting that he was wearing the longer cape during this fight.
I mean I guess but surely we can make more characters that are basically Humans right? By that I mean cribbing from their friends in D&D, so more Elves, Dwarves, Halfings, Vampires heck even Kor.
I think we are way past the point of bias towards Humans. I get that too monstrous fantasy races might not sell as well but they could mix it up with far more near humans for lack of a better word.
I think the cape can be explained. Its probably another case of the art depicting the character as we know them now, in order to make them more recognizable. Urza's Ruinous Blast is another example, even though Urza wouldn't have had those items or appearance during the event the card depicts. Or its possible the artist was just told to have Ajani in the art and put in the cape without understanding that was a later event.
Ethan Fleischer confirms this a flashback to when Ajani beat Bolas on Alara. EDIT whoops missed the above most link.
I think we just got a case of Urza Ruinous Blast where they put the cape since thats Ajanis look since Core Set 2015.

And I am sure, that his first incarnation PW has this as an ultimate - with the Avatar here being an 4/4 like the Bolas dragon - seems flavorful
"For starters, we looked for a way to specifically tie it to the story. For Core Set 2019, the decision was made to use the set to look back at the origin of the main antagonist of the current storyline, Nicol Bolas. It didn't advance the current story but allowed us to fill in a lot of information to make the audience more aware of who Nicol Bolas is and what he's done in the past. Nicol Bolas has been involved in a lot of Magic storylines over the years, and Core Set 2019 serves as a primer to help everyone get up to date on one of the game's biggest villains."
So it is no new story and the card pretty sure fits the Alara story very good
Thanks for the confirmation of being the climax of the Alara battle in the Maelstrom. I guess because Ajani seems more badas with the long cape they leave it on the art (which doesn’t bother me). Still hoping for a day when Ajani is printed as a 3 color walker
That artwork is top notch. A+++++++++++ and then some.
I just wish you could start with this on the battlefield like one of the Leylines if it were in your opening hand.

Wouldn't it make more sense if it could kill Nicol Bolas, the Arisen on his planeswalker side though (i.e. 7 power I guess)? It's not like Ajani beat up Bolas before he flipped.
I'll solve my own unreasonable flavor expectation by assuming Bolas had already done his -3 to deal 10 damage to Ajani, who cast Heroic Intervention or something. Or maybe he dealt 10 damage to Ajani causing him to "die" but that only means he quit fighting for me, triggering the creation of the Avatar as his last act but eventually recovering so I could summon him later.

aww
Planeswalkers die when they're put into graveyards from the battlefield now, so that's something.

Story wise, Ajani created an avatar of Bolas to fight Bolas himself, that's how he won the battle.
And now we look at Nicol Bolas, the Ravager?
Aye, Ajani's Last Stand is a precise counter to Bolas's discard trigger, which created a 4/4 flyer to battle him. Awesome flavor, simply awesome.
But that makes me worry for Ajani's fate comes the last battle. I knew Ajani would eventually die for something benevolent, but it still hurts.
