Yeah. I started providing tokens without stats for this kind of stuff in my custom sets pretty much the moment I saw overlays for morph back in Tarkir-block. It's a convenience that I appreciate - just the fact that you have a token to represent a token really helps even if you need to memorize what you copied - and with the art clue you even get the memory aide that reminds you what you copied the creature with which might be all the hint you need to recall. So all jokes about strings aside this is a step up from simply not providing a token and such an easy thing to do for the company.
I don't get what this is supposed to be.
Generally if you copy a critter (say you copied a Royal Assassin), you could just use spare copies of that card or a die to indicate the number of copies next to the copied critter.
Having to scribble out "Royal Assassin" "Creature - Human Assassin" "T,:Deestroy target tapped creature" and "1/1" seems like a massive timesink.
I'd rather have tokens for stuff that doesn't have it, like the 3/3 Spirits from Oyobi, or the 3/1s with Haste from that legendeary orc, iirc.
Weird.

The "Crazy One", playing casual magic and occasionally dipping his toes into regular play since 1994.
Currently focusing on Pre-Modern (Mono-Black Discard Control) and Modern (Azorious Control, Temur Rhinos).
Find me at the Wizard's Tower in Ottawa every second Saturday afternoons.
I use the Time Spiral player cards for these indeterminate tokens. But it's not that bad, within the context of the deck the art will kind of clue you in to where this token came from. Although the token could be a different thing every time you get through with the cipher.
I could see a future Unset experimenting with "write on" cards that let you write whatever you want on the card, within certain parameters. For example, letting you write any total power/toughness combination equal to 5 (0/5, 1/4, 2/3, 3/2, 4/1, 5/0) in the p/t box, writing any creature type in the subtype spot (even making up a new creature type if you like), or even naming creature cards/tokens (so you could name a Dragon "Charlie" for example). Rules text would be a little trickier, but maybe there could be spaces where you can write words or numbers. They could introduce "N Mana" costs, where you write a number in the mana symbol which then determines the value of N effects on the card, kinda like X but with the ability to set a fixed converted mana cost. For example, a red sorcery that costs NR and deals N damage to any target. You could write 4 on the N symbol, which will then cause the spell to cost 4R and deal 4 damage to any target.

MTGS Wikia Article about "New World Order"
Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.
I don't get what this is supposed to be.

What if you copy an opponent's creature?
I see your point, but I would think this token and a post it note would work well.

This sounds awesome... I want a legendary creature that I can name my name and play as my commander!
How are you expected to play with this? Bring some string and lay down a path between the token and the original?
Also, the art seems strangely specific for a token that can be anything.
The art is Stolen Identity zoomed-in.

As it is, given that you're unlikely to get many, I guess you put a piece of paper on it. It's slightly better than a face down card.
What I don't get is why they didn't make it full art.

i really don't see the purpose of this particular token, but whatever floats your boat i guess
