I'm seeing comments like "Don't ride the hype train people" and "it is strange for me to see, so many people are hyped and buy this product", but I'm not seeing the hype. To me, this thread looks like twenty pages of (mostly) vitriol against the design of masters sets, with an occasional post of mild interest. If there's a hype train, I'm not seeing it.
I'll warrant that the vitriol is more earned here than in most places, as this set only exacerbates the known problem with masters sets by increasing the price. We can truthfully complain that we've been saying and saying this, and Wizards is willfully ignoring us.
Are you guys seeing something I'm not? Are people hyped about this somewhere else? They certainly aren't here.
The only hype I've seen so far are from places trying to sell the set. SCG does their usual song and dance, but the odd thing for me is that one of my LGSs is hyping this set SUPER hard. They are saying this "is the best set since Alpha" and really all I can do is laugh at how insane that sounds. I mean they still have every Masters set still on the shelf.
To me this set it looking like yet another disastrous Masters product. I don't get why they can do this kind of set right with Conspiracy and Battlebond and yet fail again and again at a proper reprint set, and that's just by ignoring the price tag.
Even Star City Games, one of the largest retailers in the U.S., is selling pre-order booster boxes below MSRP. It looks like everybody is expecting that most of the good cards have already been shown.
I guaranteed you there’s still a quite abjy spicy cards left
We only at the grazed area of rares since there’s usually around 50ish for average
And several uncommons aren’t shown yet either and we know there’s gonna be value uncommons
And several uncommons aren’t shown yet either and we know there’s gonna be value uncommons
No, we don't know that at all. There should be value uncommons. Not the same thing. There should also be value uncommons in $10 packs, but they were few and far between in the last Masters sets.

To be frank, the entire fate of the set is resting on what gets spoiled next week. If the EV is around 450 to 500+ per box we are golden. My worry is that Wizards over valued the box toppers as those hinge heavily on collectors interest. The toppers right now are just randomized singles that are revealed when a box is opened, so the topper packs have zero value while the card inside has the value. They also cant afford putting a lot of Back to Basics type cards in the set that have low demand and very low supply.
Basically, just pray they actually consulted channel fireball and Star City Games or we're all going to be rioting.

There's really only two things an LGS can do in regards to this set - hype it like mad or basically ignore it. Keep in mind, this has a lot more issues than just set makeup for an LGS. The biggest issue for them is that they found out about this set at the exact same time we all did, and their order window is that much shorter for it. For perspective, the sanctioning window for RNA opened one week before UMA was announced. Stores have to either go all in now or miss out, especially with a limited print run product.
I suppose for an LGS whose focus is mainly MTG, that's a no-brainer. But stores who only deal with MTG as a smaller part of their overall business have a much tougher decision, because they're currently stocking up for Christmas and might not have room in their budget for a surprise product from WotC of that high a cost.
My lgs has bought the hype and is preordering.... At over three hundred pounds.
For those outside if the UK, that is over a hundred pounds more than previous masters sets. They think it is going to shift.

Not all the uncommons some uncommons
I mean look at the choices (some can be upshifted or already recently reprinted)
20 pages of whining is wearing me out....can we just wait and see whats in the damn set first.
I don't see any whining, but to each his own. I'm going to find it interesting to see if tarmogoyf will drop to 40 usd. I'm not too impressed with the mythic picks as there are a lot of low supply, low demand cards in there.

About the only rare (or I’ll be ecstatic if it’s moved down to uncommon) I’m asking for in Ultimate Masters is Sliver Hive with new art depicting the Shandalar Slivers. I’ll pony up quickly for a foil playset of that.
Outside of that simple request, it’ll come down to what’s picked for the uncommons or commons if I buy packs or not.
There's really only two things an LGS can do in regards to this set - hype it like mad or basically ignore it.
Thing is that there is a difference between hype and calling it the best thing ever. One is "This looks like an incredible set, better get before we're out" and the other is "HOLY S***! This the #1 thing EVER that does everything you want and more!"
I'm still holding out on a Phyrexian Altar reprint in Ultimate Masters at either Rare or Mythic since it recently climbed to $55.00.

Prices in paper MtG have really long since overtaken the boundaries of the realm of reason, in the US in particular. Here in EU the price is a bit lower, but still foolish. I'm not sure the game can still grow if this trend doesn't stop.
Only way to do it is to more reprint sets. Core Sets help, but it can't do it all, and other reprint sets do as well as long as they are not $10+. I enjoy sets like Battlebond and Conspiracy far more only because of the price alone, and Conspiracy literally has cards I cannot play with outside of draft.
I'm still holding out on a Phyrexian Altar reprint in Ultimate Masters at either Rare or Mythic since it recently climbed to $55.00.
Well it won’t be at Mythic. We’ve been told all mythics in the main set are among the box toppers, so if there was no box topper Altar (there wasn’t) there’s no Mythic altar.
I’m with you - hoping for a rare. But thinking it unlikely. I’m not the negative-nancy that thinks all the remaining rares are Triskaidekaphobia. But I do believe every rare above $40 is quite likely already accounted for. If they had slated PA for this set, they quite likely would have made it among the box toppers.

Sigarda, Mikaeus, lord of extinction and raging ravine are all worth 15$?
If so, i'm sad for the US.
Based on current (admittedly shallow) TCGPlayer mid preorder prices, Sigarda and LoE are $15 (and Mythic!); Raging Ravine is $15 and Rare; Mikaeus is $25 and mythic.

What's the origin of this rumor? I mean I don't think any packs have been distributed yet, the only cards that would be known are the ones allowed for preview. It sounds more like someone speculated than someone knows... if packs are in the wild a lot more than two more rares would be known.
I'm probably one of the minority, or silent majority, but I'd rather they save these reprints for a core set instead of for auxiliary products like this. If they want their product to sell, throw it in an affordably priced product like a core set or expert-level set.
It will never happen because said cards are "too strong" for Standard environments, which is chaff if you ask me, but hey one can dream can't they?

Edit: I'm with Ryperior in wanting Goblin Lore to be reprinted.

Anything that doesn't see play in a 75 card format gets obliterated by reprints. Look at Reshadan port or karakas for examples of this. For this set to hold water they need the big guns.

I think we could likely have both. Cards generally aren't actually 'too strong for Standard' they're just too expensive to put in packs they can't charge more for. Eventually things like Tarmogoyf that get regular reprints will be $40 or so, and then they will MAGICALLY be not too strong for Standard.
