Am I the only one a bit disappointed that in a planeswalker-heavy set, Gideon gets two cards? Couldn't the planeswalker decks have included 2 different planeswalkers from the main set like Tezzeret as the buy-a-box promo? Tezzeret didn't have a stained-glass art and he has a card in Ravnica. The same could've been done and have 39 different planeswalkers in the
set.
You are not alone. But ye from a marketing stand point having leading role characters as the main on those is good.
In the other hand, they missed the oportunity to remove Sorin and Nahiri from the main set and make them the face of those decks. Like, how awersome it would have been if one of those was Sorin and the other Nahiri, introduce 2 new walkers (or just a RW walker to take nahiri's spot on the main set)...
Like, Sorin and Nahiri are alread doing nothing in the story, just let them fight in the duel deck and show cards explicity showing that they are there but ignoring bolas... lel missed oportunity, but maybe they just wanted to show off jace and gideon for the last time (althought if they show jace death it may actually be a shapeshifter)
I may be reading too far into things. But the cloth hanging off Gideon's waist looks very similar to the color and design of Jace's cloak. It reminds me of how Ajani began wearing Elspeth's cloak after Heliod betrayed her and Ajani failed to protect her...
My first post after many long years of lurking around, just to say this:
Bolas, you better kill that slab of beef you son of a B****. If you get smacked down by some idiot running hog wild with the Blackblade, boy, you better mot Bolas. Be better than that, Nicky. Cmon man

The true mind can weather all the lies and illusions without being lost. The true heart can tough the poison of hatred without being harmed. Since beginning-less time, darkness thrives in the void but always yields to purifying light.
I invision a future where one is not mighty when he can silence a crowd with brutality,
but when he leaves them speechless with wisdom.

Actually it does looks like he is carryng Jace clothes, maybe he is an illusion? maybe jace is death.
I really hope Gideon doesn't die here. He's my favorite planeswalker so I'm a bit biased, but I think his story would have a much better end if he were part of the Return to Theros story. He could face off against the gods of Theros and their meddling now that he has a newfound respect for the gods of Amonkhet. He could go with Ajani to get justice for Elspeth and maybe even barter his life to Erebos for hers. He would finally die like he was meant to when he attacked Erebos and got his friends killed.
I seen enough theatrical plays to know how this ends.
With Bolas whining for 5 minutes straight about how his mortal wound is killing him before actuially dying or with Gideon whining for 10 minutes about how he failed in killing his enemy before dying from his mortal wound to the heart?
Orzhov Guildgate? Gideon has a WB deck?
Bigger Ajani's Pridemate will probably have a home.
Funny Considering he seems to be alligned with the Boros Legion in those cards
I think it's fitting since...
(a) ... the guilds put down their differences to fight a common enemy. What better way to put a Boros-allied hero in command of an Orzhov-colored deck to get that message across?
(b) ... the deck might be the Gideon deck, but in the block's story so far as also revealed in the trailer this conflict will be the big moment for both Gideona and Liliana (the two mythic planeswalkers this set beside Nicol Bolas as well), so why not give her a color nod?

Planar Chaos was not a mistake neither was it random. You might want to look at it again.

It's about time for the reserved list to die, for the sake of Vintage and Legacy (And Commander).
Gideon's first ability strongly resembles the requirement for his Origins card transformation. Brings back memories...
Also, I think his suicidal leap was spoiled too early.
Well, that's some major foreshadowing we've got here (Not that we needed it, Hazoret explicitly told Gideon he was going to die fighting a god in one of the Amonkhet web stories).
After seeing these, I'm more sure than ever Gideon's going to die. No shame if you ask me, I never liked "beefslab" anyway. Hopefully Teyo or Elspeth or whoever else steps in to fill the empty chair in the Gatewatch will be more interesting.
In fact, I'm kinda happy because Gideon dying makes Liliana actually surviving the war (in spite of the trailer) a little bit more likely. Fingers crossed!
I say that Gideon will die for a simple reason : his cards are totally boring and always do basically the same ***** all over. They can't make thousands of variants of "invincible creature PW" forever, the design space for him is already exhausted, they just feel all the same thing. Time to go and to explore new fresh designs of the color pie for the white hero of the brand.

I would much rather have Gideon survive than Liliana. I'm so tired of her tsundere peronality. Like she's stuck being an Avril Lavigne fan circa mid 2000's hehe.

That's a bummer. Really puts a damper on the story when you know the stakes aren't there...
In standard I'd say gideon is competitive. The thing is the four drop will never be a 3/3 by end of turn and will be at minimum a 5/5. The thing holding it back is that we are in a format with a 5/3 hexproof and a 6/6 hexproof creature. Plus Angel's got a huge boost with feather.

1. (Ravnica Allegiance): You can't keep a good esper control deck down... Or Wilderness Reclamation... or Gates...
2. (War of the Spark): Guys, I know what we need! We need a cycle of really idiotic flavor text victory cards! Jace's Triumph...
3. (War of the Spark): Lets make the format with control have even more control!

Picture this: You're a new player being told by WotC's marketing that this set is the climactic moment for the current story arc and one of the biggest sets for Magic's story ever. You go to your LGS to get one of the pw decks, only to find out they are for Sir and Dame Not Appearing in This Story Arc.
True, but then what about Tezzeret? He's literally Bolas's main lacky - his right hand, I dare say. And his card in the set is via a buy-a-box promo. That pretty much makes your point moot.

Do you even know if he plays a more important role than bringing the Eternals over? So far there hasn’t been a mention of him on any cards.

The sequel book is called War of the Spark: Forsaken. It will also be heavily connected to the war.
So just because Jace appears in the next book doesn't mean he's safe.
Jace, as the most popular Planeswalker, is almost assuredly not dying. Stakes in the story doesn't mean everyone has to be able to die, and unless your only favorites are the most popular characters (or confirmed survivors like Tibalt) then it's not like there are no stakes. I'm still worried Narset, Tamiyo, or some other characters I like could die for instance.

This story revolves around death...sure, not every story needs to use the prospect of death to create tension (stakes) but this one has chosen to do that. The teaser trailer showed sparks getting snuffed out and the main trailer shows Dack being killed and Liliana getting torn apart. So, in this case, your point about stakes not requiring everyone to die is irrelevant. Everyone dying is exactly what is at stake here and knowing that a select few are promised to survive for future stories greatly diminishes the impact of the narrative.
It’s also okay that the heroes could overcome the odds and survive. That’s not the problem. The problem is when the audience knows that must be the outcome.
I’m not even specifically calling for Jace to die in this thread. I just noticed something that looked like it might be a neat way to suggest his passing or suggest that people may think he passed. Gideon, like Ajani feels a sense of duty to his people and would like wear something of a fallen friend’s as a reminder of that person, his failure to save that person, and more.

Something like Wolverine losing his Adamantium and healing factor in the 90s Fatal Attraction comics but find a way to restore it later in the series.

Finally a good white villain quote: "So, do I ever re-evaluate my life choices? Never, because I know what I'm doing is a righteous cause."

I doubt it hehe. Elspeth is doing the killing blow in the art while Gideon is just flying towards Bolas.
Gideon is ****ed

Well thats sad for the seccond and third character, could not care more about the first tho. Did the first died in agony or being betrayed?
Did the book said there was possible more casualities or there was just those walkers named?
