I haven't seen yet this card, but a friend showed it to me, I couldn't find the source, but it looks like part of the spanish leaks.

Then gain life equal to the number of cards in your hand.

Kytheon had known war every single day of his life, now at last he knew peace.
Man, Last Supper vibes coming out of that art. Card is fairly decent too.

So, Gideon didn't actually sacrifice anything then. I bet the two (two!) other named planeswalkers who "died" in this "devastating war" aren't really dead either, but rather, catching up with old friends and chillaxing in heaven. Great storytelling, Wizards.

So the happily ever after ending is real after all.
This story is a utter trash.
Apocalypse and Time Spirale are masterpieces of drama and tragedy compared to this.
This war was a joke the whole time.

Seeing as those are Kytheon's Irregulars, and they're dead, Gideon is definitely dead. It's happily ever after for him sure since he doesn't have to fight anymore, but he's dead.

This at least makes sense, as Theros has an afterlife. I'm not upset by it. This is the logical conclusion of his arc.
I was waiting for a card showing the aftermath, maybe a big state funeral, but this is really sweet. It's weird and poignant to see Gideon without armor. Great creative treatment.
I wouldn't take this to mean he lives. Those look like his irregulars and they are dead. He could be in his 'heaven'.
It's a legitimate question though whether he will reappear as a character in the inevitable "Adventures in the Theran Underworld" arc we are looking forward to.

Planar Chaos was not a mistake neither was it random. You might want to look at it again.

No artist credit yet, but I'd bet money on that being Howard Lyon's work. Howard has a background in religious illustration, so I'm not surprised that there's some significant influence.

Changing out of nowhere conveniently to a plane where there is a heaven the last minute you know you are going to die seems to me the most horrible way to force a happy ending to me.
Urza, Venser, Gerrard....they are in no heaven. They have no consciousness, they are truly lost forever into an eternal nothingness.
Gideon is just a happy spirit of nyx now. It's totally irrelevant that is dead, if you have a consciousness as a ghost you are not truly death in this game. He even got a better fate of Elspeth, and that's another character that can lazily be resurrected in any moment for plot conveniences.

Hopefully they don't bring him back, it would undo his whole character arc. But knowing Wizards...

Knowing Wizards, he's dead. Elspeth's death is a technicality (because of how she died), but other than that, when major characters die they stay dead.

Well, how do 'souls' function in the Multiverse anyway? Does each one have an afterlife, or are they depending on the Plane in question?
I can quickly head canon a way to have this both make sense, and be a satisfying ending to a characters story. This is how stories SHOULD end. Its why I find the whole rest of the story arc immensely unsatisfying. This at least makes sense.

This seems like the most logical conclusion, that or he planeswalked to Theros as he died and is reuniting with his Irregulars in the afterlife.
Like the fact that they realized that this kind of spells should replace themselves.
