Is it really? I could be super far off here, but you sound bitter.
How on earth can a jace, and ugin for market value be hot garbage. Especially since you get 6 other walkers who retail at roughly another 100 usd and 24 sealed packs to draft or open.
Enlighten me mr/mrs sour grapes
Because, despite some execution flaws, I actually liked the old Masterpiece system. I personally watched multiple young players open Kaladesh Masterpieces at the prerelease and it was obviously the highlight of their day. That's important. The old system catered to everyone, anyone had a chance to own one, and most importantly it actually encouraged players to go out to FNM and actually participate in tournaments because of the potential to get a sweet ass card.
As mentioned above, the Mythic Edition caters solely to A) investors/scalpers or B) players with a large amount of disposable income. It's simply not the same, and in my opinion is far, far worse. Not to mention that WotC is marking the ***** up out of it. They're essentially selling you 8 cards for $150. That's ******* stupid. It's not like it costs them any more to print a Jace than it does a Colossal Dreadmaw. They might as well make Black Lotus a box topper and sell the boxes at $10,000 each at this point.

The fact they put Jace and Ugin in the last one is pretty telling, to be frank. I think the artwork on a lot of the mythic edition cards this time around looks bad, especially Nahiri and Tezzeret.

That Tezzeret is gorgeous. Really want him, Jace and Bolas. Never will own them though because to hell with those prices. Really disgusted with how Wizards has been doing things lately and the secondhand market isn't helping.
Even though the price is $250, I don't see how you can complain since the value right away is more than that. Plus you get packs and all the rares and mythics that may come in those. Yes its a lot for one shot but frankly WoTC is giving you money if you buy this.

Been a member here for over a dozen years. Playing since '95 just got lost in the twitch shuffle.
Next time, title the thread Mythic Edition, not Masterpieces. These are not masterpieces. I thought they had revived Masterpieces for the set.
These are litterally masterpieces. They say it on the card. The box they come in is a mythic edition.
Don’t be so obtuse.
Can't say if your answer is serious or not, so I'm treating it as such.
That answer is the most obtuse thing one could have said.
Masterpieces were defined from their inception as an extra set of cards that are randomly inserted in regular boosters, like the lands from Battle for Zendikar or the artifacts in Kaladesh.
These are only called masterpieces in name, but are not in essence.
Hence the confusion.
This is now the third time we've been through this Masterpiece/Mythic Edition set thing. It shouldnt be confusing anymore
Also this.
Or, maybe, WotC could stop just naming everything "Mythic [X]" and instead have some actually useful, distinct names. Mythic Rank. Mythic Edition. Mythic Championship. Mythic Invitational. So on and so forth.
The fact that people are still confused about the name means it's a bad name. Period.

All of this. On holiday this week my 14 year old used some of his birthday money to buy a handful of old(ish) Amonkhet boosters and pulled an invocation Aven Mindcensor. Much happiness ensued. Just put the golden-ticket cards in the damned packs again will ya? That enables the feel-good; this 'Mythic Edition' method just creates feel-bad for the likes of him because he knows he'll never own them.
ETA: And I don't accept the 'but these are for collectors!' argument. The collectors with deep pockets can still dump all their cash into buying enough boxes of boosters to get them all, or just buy them on the secondary market, but ffs - 14 year olds are collectors too. At least give them a chance.

So it’s not that it’s a garbage product it’s that you can’t afford it.
This product is the opposite of garbage the price point is high, but if you want the premium walkers then the high price point is justified. If you want a box of cards then no. It’s not worth 2 and a half times the price of a box.
I have a little disposable income to spend on this. I’d rather buy it for 250 then wait and pay 500+ from scalpers.
Yes it will sell for at least twice as much to collectors and such who didn’t get one at the original 250 price point.
I have bought the other two. The card quality of the foil walkers is fantastic. They haven’t curled in me and they look gorgeous for the most part.
All in all I can say that this is not hot garbage, and the only reason people are upset about this is because they want it and can not afford it.
I’m sorry. But that’s petty.
Edit. I realize that it’s suoer expensive to ship over seas and this 250 ox is closer to 350-400 for non North Americans. That sucks. I’m sorry for all of you.
But it’s still a luxury and a master piece Nicol Bolas doesn’t win any faster then a pack version.
Am I the only one who wishes they'd swapped the regular and Masterpiece arts for Gideon Blackblade? Not saying either is bad, I just like this one better and would have preferred to see it on his WAR card.
MTGS Wikia Article about "New World Order"
Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.
So it’s not that it’s a garbage product it’s that you can’t afford it.
Yeah, I'm sure that's what it is. Do you also enjoy paying exorbitant fees for a cable television package when all you really want are a few channels? Because that's exactly what the Mythic Edition is. It's a bundle of things nobody actually wants together. Are you a collector? Cool, here's an extra $100 fee for a bunch of loose WAR packs you don't actually want. Neato.
The reason I'm upset is because when WotC announced they'd be putting the Masterpiece series on hiatus, I assumed that to mean it would eventually return under it's old form. If WotC considers the Mythic Edition to be a continuation of the Masterpiece series (as evidenced by the fact the cards say "Masterpiece" on them) then yes, I'm very disappointed because it means we'll likely never see Expeditions/Inventions/Invocations again in standard packs. That's a shame, because those were a good idea that with a few minor tweaks could have been great. Instead we got this cash-grab nonsense that only benefits scalpers.

Cool cool cool you want to play the lottery. Have fun opening packs looking for specific cards.
Other then buying singles this is the best way to get high value singles to trade or sell and you pay a bargain price. I also get to draft with my friends in a no stakes environment.
The masterpieces you want are bad for the game. They devalue all the cards in the set they come from. Do you really want to go back to Kaladesh and have lottery tickets, oh. Also all the Rares are worth a dollar because the masterpieces eat up all the value equity?

Or they just mostly sucked. And are no longer legal in Standard and don't fit in Modern. Dominaria doesn't have masterpieces, and most of the rares there are worth a dollar or less. And when it rotates out, Mox Amber (which is a weird fluke based off of WAR) and the lands will likely drop as well.
And then there's all those scads of high-value rares in Core 2019... Good thing it didn't have masterpieces to tank all the value.

I like how you say it's playing a lottery right before mentioning that simply buying singles is obviously the best way to get specific cards. If you want a specific Masterpiece you can buy it as a single like anything else. It's not playing the lottery.
As for your other "point"... yes that was kind of the intention when they added Masterpieces in the first place. In fact, it was literally the first reason listed in MaRo's introductory article for the product:
Now that I've explained what we're doing, it's time to talk about how the Masterpiece Series came about and why we've chosen to do it. The short answer is that we've faced a number of challenges as Magic has grown, and we found that many of those challenges were addressed with Zendikar Expeditions. I'm going to start my explanation by walking through some of the challenges we've faced.
Challenge #1: Keeping Standard Accessible
Standard is the most-played Constructed format. It's designed as an entry point for players who wish to play Constructed Magic. Through market research and social media, we learned that many of the players who were interested in playing Standard felt it was something beyond their reach. We had to find ways to address this.
Having Standard decks that don't cost hundreds of dollars? Outrageous! I know, it's weird that people actually want to play their game without having to consider the financial ramifications. So what?
Edit. I realize that it’s suoer expensive to ship over seas and this 250 ox is closer to 350-400 for non North Americans. That sucks. I’m sorry for all of you.
But it’s still a luxury and a master piece Nicol Bolas doesn’t win any faster then a pack version.
WAT?
150$ shipment? Really? I want to buy one or two, but for 249.90$+30/40$, not 150...
Cool cool cool you want to play the lottery. Have fun opening packs looking for specific cards.

Inconsistent logic. Having lottery tickets in the packs reduces the prices of all other cards in the packs and makes standard more affordable, not less.
Standard decks will still cost hundreds of dollars because Hasbro still makes sure nearly all the tournament quality cards are at least rare if not Mythic. Just wait. You haven't seen the mythic mana-fixing land cycle yet...
So I'm a little confused by the article. "The eight special packs will each come with one of these planeswalkers, and the packs will be clearly marked with which planeswalker is in which pack."
Does this mean you get one of each guaranteed? Or is it random which ones you get.
As mentioned above, the Mythic Edition caters solely to A) investors/scalpers or B) players with a large amount of disposable income. It's simply not the same, and in my opinion is far, far worse. I know some supplemental products have ranged from very good to very bad in the past.
"Reveal a Dragon"

I haven't played a lot with my Mythic Edition I cards, but they have remained totally flat, which is really nice considering the outrageous price tag.

"Reveal a Dragon"
The box of cards is a mythic edition of war of the spark.
The 8 foil fullarts are masterpieces.
It’s a different frame and distribution from expeditions inventenions and invocations but they are masterpieces non the less.
Also this.
A lot of players never seen this product at all.
You cant buy it in a store and you couldnt buy it at all outside of the US.
So there are quite a bunch of people that even now have never heard of this product.
