It's exciting to see throwback characters. K'rrik was trapped in a time bubble on Tolaria in Time Streams, the same novel where Jhoira was introduced and where Teferi ascended (though he didn't know it at the time). I love K'rrik's use of Phyrexian mana; the neat things about the Commander legends is they get to play with various abilities that were not available when their characters were written.

MTGS Wikia Article about "New World Order"
Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.
Huh... let me look at some of the stronger things to do with this guy.
For
Blood Celebrant : 3 life to add mana to take care of any generic mana costs seems pretty fair. Darkness : Getting this thing as a free trick for 2 life seems pretty neat. Not exactly competitive, sure, but neat. Demonic Consultation / Entomb / Reanimate / Vampiric Tutor / Imperial Seal : Oldies but goodies. Inquisition of Kozilek / Thoughtseize : Not too powerful in multiplayer formats but still nice cards for certain combo-heavy metas. Raven's Crime may be better as a way to throw away those now-useless swamps in your hand. Gonti's Mechanations : A card that uses your life loss to give you life. Not strong but just something interesting. Gravecrawler : Cookie to whoever finds an infinite combo first. Shadowborn Apostle : 14 life for demon is a tough rate but grabbing Villis with this thing onboard is nice. Shadowfeed : While I doubt that this card has ever been mentioned on this forum, I'll mention almost anything that actually gets a net lifegain. Thrull Parasite : If paying 2 life nets you 3 lifegain on each spell you cast, this thing essentially drains your foes for free whenever you cast a spell. Tortured Existence : While I generally prefer Phyrex. Reclamation, having no generic mana in the activate cost (and not carrying an additional life cost) make this a bit more interesting here.
For
Bloodghast / Nether Traitor : Additional self-reanimators like gravecrawler with no generic mana in any cost. That may make it worth considering. The Elderspell: General anti-walker tech Gate to Phyrexia: Super-flavorful anti-artifact tech that nobody sees coming. Sinkhole: Anti-land Te... whoa, seems like I'm finding a pattern.
For
Doomsday: Well, if you were going to die either way... Necropotence: ...you might as well go out with a bang. Sadistic Sacrament: Situationally useful card, though I'm not sure how often I'd pay 6 life for it.
Honestly, this card is fine as an all-purpose cost reducer for a black suicide deck. When we get a few more stand-out cards without generic mana symbols, however, we'll start really cooking with gas.
This card raises no alarm bells because paying life instead of mana has a long track record of stabilizing formats and keeping them healthy for a long time to come.
After all, who doesn't think that T1 Mana Crypt, Dark Ritual, this card, Doomsday, some black cantrip card that functions as Gitaxian Probe, Cruel Bargain, Sacrifice the K'rrik, Mikaeus, the Unhallowed, Viscera Seer, and Walking Ballista to KO a game isn't healthy for a format. I don't have time to play a four hour game of Magic, the Gathering. Magic that goes on that long isn't healthy, and I need to go grocery shopping.
(Also, I didn't create this Doomsday pile; it's from Reddit).

I don't see him as a play stuff for "free" commander, but instead as a play stuff for insanely cheap commander. You can drop stuff really early with him.
This, this is why I love this product. The chance to see the characters of the old lore in card form. I am still waiting for others, for Ashnod, Gix, and others. But each year we get a call back.
I can't wait to see what this guy brings, or what other call backs we get.

Oh, powerful cards do powerful things? You don’t say! Stuff like that has existed way before this spoiler. Does it make it easier? Sure. But Doomsday “piles” have existed for ages.
Swamp Sol ring mana vault cast him pay 4 life total vamp Tutor a rings of bright hearth go infinite mana on turn 2 play your deck. Do the lose life greatest power thing and win
This is true but how many entrenched Magic players have even read Time Streams nevertheless new players. I'm pretty sure a number of people are going to think he is the son of Yawgmoth. Academy Infiltrator or Tolarian Cast Away or something would have been better (Those names are not good either but something in that vein)

Must be in the Madness deck - don't see what possible interactions it could have in the Sultai Morph deck.

He effects costs. I would assume this means morph costs, too. That said I also don't think he'll be in the morph deck.

He got even closer than gix did on killing urza
He gives himself the son of Yawgmoth title in the novel he's in. Not really that confusing.
