One thing i really hope to see on the return to Theros: Legendary Evil Archons from the legends. You know, that story about evil Archons that dominated Theros and slaved leonins and that where defeated by the Heroes (and rulers) of Meletis. If we are going to the Umderworld of the plane for a prisonbreak story then I want our not-so-dead evil badguys riding on giant mounts, maybe tri colored Archons (to make them appealing for brawl and maybe use them as a antidevotion in theory and flavor but not soo much in the practical sense)(maybe they could all cost generic mana and gain power depending on what colour of mana you used to cast them)
How will they do a Godzilla set when the average creature should start around 10/10 at minimum?
The monsters probably start small and get bigger with this “build your own monster” mechanic.
This would even fit with the kaiju theme. How much of a kaiju film is watching the monster(s) wreck other things far away, or be on the move, vs the time spent with the monster(s) actually in the thick, fighting and destroying what's right around the audience's perspective?
The looming distant threat slowly revealing what it's capable of, then finally having something set it off in a dangerous way, feels like something that's never been done (another thing MaRo said, this is a mechanic "they've never done before"), and also feels very kaiju to me.
If this is truly a "Kaiju"set with all the above-mentioned flavor - I could see Suspend making a comeback. Much like Zendikar sets, there need to be a way to enable battlecruiser magic. Monsters will take forever to cast, no doubt, unless they start small and just grow with +1/+1 counters (booooring). Suspend could be a great mechanic to capture the flavor of a monster coming through a portal, or as @Wraithe mentioned, slowly approaching the coast from the ocean horizon. Much like Greater Gargadon, the suspend counters could be removed through certain accomplishments - sacrificing lands or artifacts, depending on the monsters. You could even ADD suspend counters to get an added effect - "If Kaiju is suspended, you may add a suspend counter to destroy target artifact" - etc.
I could also see the Kaiju monsters affecting the board in some way each time a counter is removed. Like:
Fungal Kaiju Monster
Creature - Monster Fungus
Suspend 6 -
Whenever a time counter is removed from this card, you may exile a card from your graveyard: Create a 1/1 green Saproling creature token.
Whenever Fungal Kaiju Monster attacks, it gets +1/+1 until end of turn for each Saporling creature token you control.
3/3
Hive Mother Kaiju Monster
Creature - Monster Insect
Suspend 3 -
Whenever a time counter is removed from this card, target creature you control gets gets +1/+1 until the end of turn.
5/5
Although WotC would need to be careful with this and not make anything super busted.
I was super surprised by the off-hand announcement of all of next year's standard sets, but I'm not complaining. It's nice to see that this thread evolved into a constructive discussion after the doomsayers all belched out their bile on page 1....
Return to Theros:
The set symbol alone promises a focus on the underworld, and I could see the entire set focussing much more on Nyx as well, rather than the hero-vs-monster theme that was around last time. Elspeth in the underworld plotting revenge against the tyrannical Heliod and recruiting unlikely allies (Erebos etc), then herself ascending to godhood to replace Heliod? Yeah, I'm ready for this. Devotion is a given, since it is the mechanical link between the plane's inhabitants and the Gods/Nyx, which are the most prominent feature on Theros. I could see then dropping the enchantment-focus however.
Erebos is Elspeth's enemy, too. Their bargain was that Erebos would get Elspeth if Daxos was allowed to leave the underworld. Problem is, Daxos left as a Returned, which is obviously not what Elspeth intended. Erebos cheated on the deal, and he deserves the Godsend himself. But since the focus is more on the underworld this time, I can see a greater focus on death matters, like maybe a Bestow variant that allows you to cast creature cards from your graveyard as Auras, and a theme of sacrifice in line with the ritual sacrifices often made to deities historically.

MTGS Wikia Article about "New World Order"
Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.

The only problem with Suspend is... MaRo said it was a mechanic they've never used before. Therefore, I don't think they'll use Suspend, even if it would be an interesting take.
I was looking up the product description for Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths, and Zendikar, and there isn't any Planeswalker Decks, or any precon of any kind. I also looked at the product description for Core Set 2021, and instead of having a Planeswalker Deck display consisting of 5 different decks, 2 copies each, like in 2019 and 2020, it now contains 2 different decks, 5 copies each.
Is this a mistake, or are Planeswalker Decks being limited to only Core Sets now?
How will they do a Godzilla set when the average creature should start around 10/10 at minimum?
The monsters probably start small and get bigger with this “build your own monster” mechanic.
Or they start out incapable of attacking or blocking (and likely being very difficult to remove from play) until certain conditions exist, or certain cards are played on them. So similar to Theros gods, but possibly without the animation condition being on the card itself?
Think of a massive potential-threat sitting on the board waiting for the right time to become an actual threat. Everyone sees it on the horizon coming, knows it's extremely difficult if not impossible to remove from play, and your opponents are hoping to defeat you before it arrives, or be able to slow it down (see: remove the things that currently allow it to attack/block) long enough to win.
This would even fit with the kaiju theme. How much of a kaiju film is watching the monster(s) wreck other things far away, or be on the move, vs the time spent with the monster(s) actually in the thick, fighting and destroying what's right around the audience's perspective?
Hell. Perhaps they even start off only able to affect other behemoths? Maybe they get to attack one another directly normally to accomplish some effect, but not players or planeswalkers, until cards allow them to attack the latter. This would allow them to be quite cheap with massive bodies, since behemoths are starting off only interacting with one another.
The looming distant threat slowly revealing what it's capable of, then finally having something set it off in a dangerous way, feels like something that's never been done (another thing MaRo said, this is a mechanic "they've never done before"), and also feels very kaiju to me.
I'm getting an Augment vibe. Has there ever been an ability from an un-set make it to a standard set?
I'm looking forward to Theros, can't wait to see what they came up withfor a greek underworld. What's going to be white aligned here?
Zendikar is amazing and seeing the work that Nissa and possibly Nahiri have been doing to restore it would be cool. You think there will be a few straggling eldrazi? I wouldn't seeing a few, like 5-6.

I highly doubt there will be a single Eldrazi card. Once bitten...
The whole Meld mechanic was inspired by B.F.M. Also, Unstable looked, among other things, like a testing ground for black border, I wouldn't be surprised to see more variants of mechanics used there. Well, besides the ones that are barred from black border like dice rolling or those that would cause too much rules headache like last strike. I'm expecting to see a second deck, if not staight port of contraptions, in black border, though probably not in the near future.
I’m curious if the entire Theros set will be based upon the Underworld.
Feels kinda...small.
Not really. Greek underworld is pretty varied, with locations ranging from Tartarus to the Elysium, so the Theros underworld could be basically a mirror image of the mortal world.

If it happens, I have to wonder how much more graveyard shenanigans are going to be included. It feels like WotC is trying more and more to blur the distinctions between library, graveyard and exile as defined only by whether your opponent can interact with them, and very little about how long any card actually stays in those zones.
Marit Lage is cosmic horror and not kaiju. They already wasted the eldrazi as kaiju, i hope they won't do the same with marit lage

How i feel about competitive players and casual players in EDH: The competitive are german tourists, the casual are italian tourists, both in a italian beach. The italians asking themselves "why are the germans here?" make a legitimate question, the answer is because the beach is beautiful, no matter the country you came from. The italians wanting to ban the germans are dumb, because if the germans pay for their stay and follow the rules like everyone else, they have the right to be in the beach. Hovewer, if the germans started to ask themselves "why are the italians here?"... they would be dumb as hell.
Very excited about the 4 sets especially about Theros, heres hoping for Gideon to show up ... Ikoria is just plain cool... and Zendikar? Really hoping for fetches... but ...after BFZ... I just hope they do the plane justice (I don't think BFZ was too terrible.. but it could have been a little less underwhelming)... coreset... I hope its good not really sure what to expect from it
They made it sound very much like it was a kaiju world. Moreover, Mark Rosewater said on the stream that you get to "build your own monsters". So I'm guessing it's some sort of put out a kaiju that's pretty basic and hard to kill, then throw more and more things on it to make it something unique to your deck and/or this particular game.
Sure. Like Kaladesh made you feel like an inventor. Except that the only mechanic that made you feel like an inventor, Fabricate, barely appeared in Kaladesh and wasn't even in Aether Reborn.
Now, maybe if this Monster Set has Host and Augment or something very similar, then we're talking. Otherwise, you're not actually making anything.
Mark today stated that it’s an entirely new mechanic and not related to either host or augment

Well we have leyline of the Void in standard...
Its interesting that we have a lot of powerful enchantments and we are going into a enchantment themed plane, I wonder if we are getting enchantment removal more in Theros and if we are gonna get more “black enchatment destruction”
Today I realized that Adventure is being introduced (and tested) now so that they can repurpose it and bring it back again for Zendikar Rising.. (It's "Adventure World", right?)
Just a thought: now with Brawl decks we can have a main set all in the Theros Underworld and still see legendaries from the “main” Theros world and Nyx. For exemple we could get a Brimaz card in the set as the commander of one of the brawl decks. Or get the rulers of the main cities or we can get another version of legendaries printed on commander sets. Looks nice.

It would probably get a different border if that’s the case
It really depends how adventure hits on the storm scale
But however I think they got it ready in advanced so doubt it will make it since there’s no storm scale yet

Not enough time to incorporate the feedback. Remember that they are working 2+ years in advance and it will take some time until they process the player reception of Adventure.

The Vorthos community will await the consequences of the Eldrazi Titans' deaths/sealing. We will keep the watch.

Ikoria suposivly a kaiju plane
Oh boy
Could Ikoria be when Marit lage makes a reappearance?
https://mtg.gamepedia.com/Marit_Lage
Marit lage is the right size to be a kaiju catergory creature.
Not sure if she still has a place in recent lore, the Eldrazi pretty much filled her niche.

Well simply start with converted mana cost similar to what eldrazis usually get but adding colors
Or they start small and get bigger thus making monster mechanic
