Unbelievable. They didn’t even have the courtesy of finishing something that originally had an ebook. One of the most hotly anticipated lore resolutions ever tossed out carelessly to be a missed opportunity. Six years to plan this.
It’s just remarkable to me how during MTG’s golden age of sales, the lore can tank to such an appalling low. Between WAR novels and now this, I’m genuinely distraught to such a point as to abandon MtG lore after this set.
I fear this is actually a direct result of the golden age of sales. As more people play magic it's possible that the % that cares about lore keeps dropping. Which leads to no real story for a sequel block that ended in not exactly a cliffhanger but a significant hook.
I don't really know what I could hope for at this point but at the minimum my expectations for future lore is so low I can't be disappointed.
they've been ass terrible lately. why even bother.
they really haven't been a good read in almost 2 decades.
better to scrap it and do it right than keep pushing out turds. it would be nice if we could get brothers war quality books again, but it isn't likely to happen. i'm glad they're not forcing us to eat ***** this time.
And yet the garbage fire of WotS gets not one, but two full physical novels, and a series of online chapters.
I don’t even posses the strength or vocabulary to express the vast depth of my disappointment. I was counting so much on Theros. It’s the only lore I’ve wanted from MTG other than Jace in Vryn.
I mean, on the one hand, Theros is one of my favourite planes, so I'm disappointed for obvious reasons. I honestly don't particularly care about Elspeth, but it would've been cool to at least get a series of shorts set on the plane.
On the other hand, if WotS is the sort of story they're so incredibly proud of that they had to push it in our faces as much as they did, maybe it's for the best.

I was already gut punched by the loss of my thief boy ravnica, then forsaken comes in for round two, round three with nothing at all I just gotta tap out.

I’m with you. Forget it. If Theros of all storylines gets discarded while Greg Weisman gets two novels to destroy the Bolas arc, I’m checking out. Why not have had Wrexler just do a Theros novel instead of waste time trying to revive a horse beaten beyond death after the fact?
1) New content underway. Netflix. They can't afford any distractions. They won't have a bunch of chances to get it right..it has to land perfectly. So...no distractions. All eggs are in the Netflix basket, creative-speaking.
2) No one goes to the mothersite anymore. Of the number that might wander there, even fewer go there to read storyline content.
3) Now, given #2, why in the hell would anyone in charge of budgets want to keep funding this content? It is literally money down the tubes with zero return-on-investment. I mean..how much $ would you expect to make writing Magic Fan Fiction? How big an audience would you reasonably expect?)
4) Now ask those exact same question but replace 'Fan Faction' with 'Slick CGI Animated series hosted on Netflix'? I think you'd have some different answers in that case. So did they. That's why this is happening.

From what I understand, its basically what-if stories, AKA as elsewhere stories. In that the stories told are said to take place in their own continuity. And that they have dark undertones. With the focus being on an alternate-reality version of the Gatewatch they aren't constrained to existing continuity aside from where each character came from and the fact that they are in a group.
It has potential to be good. I love The Dragon Prince but I can tell you that animation wasn't smooth in its first season, got way better in the later two.
It's also possible that negative reactions to various parts of the recent lore has soured them even further. I for one support this decision. The supplemental lore material has been significantly weaker thanhsn the rest of their properties for a long time.

Note that if a more accessible medium like a tv series expands the MTG audience, it could create more demand for written content. If the demand became high enough, it might even push business decisions toward producing high quality written content. But that's in the long run.
In any case, even though a limited audience consumes the MTG written material, the existence of deep lore to the game has a more nebulous relationship to the quality of the product than the more easily measured metrics of direct profitability or viewership. It drives enthusiasm in the fandom, creates fans like Tiro who engage in lively discussion about the franchise, all because there's more to the product than the story told on the cards. Even when only a minority of a fandom takes interest in delving into the lore, there are ripple effects from that. You might not read a particular story itself, but it might get mentioned in a forum thread or you look up an intriguing character on the wiki. And if there's something there for you to read about, that character resonates with you more. So you continue to buy cards, spending your money on that versus something else. In a game like this, it's probably more of a minority of fans who are completely disinterested in the lore than the reverse. There are good reasons to continue to invest in it, even though the way it's been executed since forever is problematic.

Exactly this. The lore adds dimension to the game. There wouldn’t even BE a Netflix show if the characters hadn’t been established by the lore. These characters wouldn’t have personalities or back stories or anything more than two dimensional images on cards to work with.
And if they’re seriously punishing us for voting with our wallets and having an opinion on that HORRENDOUS agony that was Greg Weisman and his novels, then I’m really surprised with the business practices of WOTC to resort to something that low. They hired a terrible author who was instructed by an incompetent fool. They have only themselves to blame for that inevitable result.
They had six years (and enough time to bring Wrexler on for more WOTS stories) to manage Theros. Have Kelly Digges write it. He was among their best authors who they fired to bring on hot ass trash to ruin the franchise with. Give him some work. Bring Jenna Helland back to continue the lore. Seriously? They’re just going to deprive Theros of a proper story?
We're talking about Elspeth, Phyrexia ties, a Gatewatch member (Ajani) and his motivations, Ashiok as a villain, the IDW comics and DACK Hayden’s descent into the underworld, perhaps they character’s final story. And that doesn’t even touch on resolving the Godsend novel or the pantheon of gods and the lore of Theros itself as a plane. All of this just discarded?
Maro has said that the lore articles were the most popular on the mothership site, actually
Yeah, they should have just stuck with the weekly lore articles, especially since it would mean they could spare a few articles for supplemental sets like Modern Horizons or especially Battlebond.

I mean would anyone have ever tried to make a Blind Seer EDH deck if it wasn't the only Urza creature card in existence until this summer?
Not to be the person pushing the gateway drug, but there are Magic planes books for D&D if you all want a story, what better way than to write the skeletal structure and have your friends turn it into something unrecognizable yet unforgettable?

Exactly. Let alone spend decades requesting a card for the character.
The Weekly lore articles we’re a wild success. Why they deviated from that in favor of Kelman and the utter travesty that followed is as perplexing as it is insulting.

As they put it, its akin to the Marvel Universe. As it would just be one interpretation of the same source material. Which means if one story bombed, they can always retry again with the same characters in the same setting, sometimes a new setting if they are being particularly ambitious at the time.
For example, a simple what-if question regarding the Weatherlight that is currently on Dominaria: 'What if it could actually travel to other planes?'
BOOM!
Now you can tell a different story instead of them being planelocked onto Dominaria. It can be like the Weatherlight Saga but also fresh and original. No planeswalkers aside from the few who want to observe/interfere/help, which means you can now grow attached to a band of nonwalkers traveling the multiverse in Spelljammer style featuring Jhoira, Raff, Tiana, Shanna, Arvad, and Slimefoot. This could literally be an animated netflix spinoff on its own and draw an audience in, that for them, 'scratches that itch',
Supposedly the Eldraine arc is part of a "larger story arc," as per the Wiki page, so I found it a bit odd to see how/where Theros II fits into the scheme of things. The nore I think about it, the more I think it's like one of those Supernatural filler episodes: They did it for the lolz with no direct consequence to the story as a whole (Supernatural Scratchy Curse? Pffft). Unless Ikoria lends itself to some magical (!) storyline chapter related to that in Eldraine, I can provably gather that Zendikar III probably will have a similar result too.
