Since the booster packs for this product are only going to contain 1 basic land each, why not just go the Duel Masters / Kaijudo route and allow mono colored cards to be treated as basic lands but played upside down? If you have multi colored cards why not treat them like ABU duals without the drawback from Shocklands?

It is not 1 basic land. It is one new/cool basic land. MaRo has stated that each pack has enough land in it to make the deck viable. So likely half of each pack are just going to be lands.

Yeah most likely 8/9 lands in each, and I expect one of them to be something like Evolving Wilds or a Guildgate if the booster is two-colored... It's likely that there's only one rare (+1 in 30% of them) in them, though.
The product seems very interesting and I will definitely try it if boosters come around 5€ each and the content is interesting and fun, but Wizards has failed so many opportunities in the last couple of years that I wouldn't be surprised if either the product ends up beeing "Draft-chaff meets Keyforge" or the prices skyrocket without any sense...
I kinda like this, mainly as a way to get my friends who still seem overwhelmed when I’ve invited them to draft (or make a sealed deck) to get use to the idea of opening a pack and making a deck.
Basically they don’t have to do on the spot judgements on card quality or keep track of mana curve and creature/spell ratios. While to most people those things is what drafting is about, there is something to be said in getting new players use to playing limited decks with brand new cards without the complications of deck construction.
I’ve seen a lot of new players draft, then go 0-3 in matches and blame themselves for how they built their deck. While their deck construction ability is partially to blame a lot of their losses are also due to making bad decisions while they played. In essence I think there is a tendency for new players to learn less from their mistakes when playing after drafting if they decide to place all of the blame on their own deck construction rather than their gameplay.
At this point - this intellectual property seems so milked dry that it's not even interesting or exciting anymore. Time for me to walk away for a bit until this hopefully cools down.
I'm not sure how to react to be honest. Part of me says it's like the old theme decks they used to make, and the other part says this is cow milking to the nth degree.
It was bad enough having 5+ sets in a year to work with...this is just getting silly now.
I guess it depends on what's in these boosters that will make them worthwhile. If they really wanted to whet people's appetites on this, modify the reserved list to around Weatherlight and reprint things in need of reprint from Tempest and Saga blocks.
But that's wishful thinking on my behalf.

That’s 7 sets this year... in addition to Unsanctioned + Challenger decks + the green commander collection + Ikiora commander decks + two more rounds of “Secondary commander decks” (for zendikar and commander legends) + 6 secret lairs SO FAR
So... yeah. Busy year. That’s more than 1 set/2 months and that list of supplemental products doesn’t include any Inevitable holiday gift boxes, collector boxes, Collector packs (which may be worth listing as a separate product now if they are going to have unique cards like they did in Theros), etc.
I think the thing to keep in mind is that many of these products are (mostly) reprints. Jump Start and Unsanctioned have a few new cards, but are mostly older ones, so all that's required is checking their templating for sending to the printer. It's not like they're taking away R&D brain power.
But, it is worth pointing out that even though I make good money and try to buy some of every new set, my money (and space for storage) is limited. Sets like Unsanctioned and Jump Star mean I'll be spending less on sets like Theros and M21. I hope WOTC keeps in mind that people will be adjusting their budgets for things like this.
But anyways! Jump Start looks fantastic. I love playing Pack Wars but trying to work with 5 color jank makes the games go so long and can be frustrating. This is the perfect solution and if the card lists turn out to be decent, I can see myself buying a box of these packs.
So, with all the lands, will you actually be getting LESS than the normal amount of cards per booster? That seems a little strange, especially when they used the 20 cards line to justify charging more.

Its the kind of product that sounds "cool" , but damn this product completely undermines what Limited would be about (like building an actual deck in the first place).
Screw this product.
We have plenty of choose from now, way too much if you ask me.
wizard: we have printed this 3 cards. They are 50$ on the secondary market, so pay us 40$

How i feel about competitive players and casual players in EDH: The competitive are german tourists, the casual are italian tourists, both in a italian beach. The italians asking themselves "why are the germans here?" make a legitimate question, the answer is because the beach is beautiful, no matter the country you came from. The italians wanting to ban the germans are dumb, because if the germans pay for their stay and follow the rules like everyone else, they have the right to be in the beach. Hovewer, if the germans started to ask themselves "why are the italians here?"... they would be dumb as hell.

Do we know that these will contain more than one basic land? I was under the impression you shuffled some of the 40ish cards in with 20ish external basic lands.
Also, if the packs contain more rares than regular packs or better cards in general, I think the 3 card difference isn't that big of a deal.

We have confirmation that the packs combined will have "enough" lands to play immediately as a 40 card deck. One in Three boosters will contain an "additional" rare(I assume this means there is normally only 1 rare but it is worded such that a 'normal' pack could have 2 rares and a 1 in 3 pack has 3 rares). The themes themselves have a rarity such that some themes will show up more often but even individual theme packs have slight variations between them, meaning that the Goblin Theme pack is something like a possible 30 cards so individual packs wind up as 14 random goblins and 6 mountains; except the "Mythic Rare" themes that are a specific set of 20 cards with 0 variations. Nearly all themes are monocolor but there are the occasional two color.
This product is perfect for me. A couple times a year I go away on holiday with friends and we play magic for a week solid.
The guild decks were a great set, as they were interesting but constructed and fair against each other. Commander has proven overwhelming for people who (other than me) don't play that often.
Draft felt the obvious answer when there wasn't any intro decks/ themed decks/ enough of them for how many of us were getting together.
They problem with draft though is that half the people would conclude drafting and say ugh, I don't know what I'm doing, and as darklingscribe2 mentions, my friends would then lose and blame their drafting ability.
Not to mention, not everyone arrives at the same time, so having to wait an extra day or two to open packs (or trying to figure out some other way for it to be a fair game when someone arrives towards the end of the trip and wants to play cards) is a problem.
With this set, I can buy a box, my friends and I get two (maybe three to mix it up) boosters, complete with the thrill of opening packs, whenever I want, and without any of the worry that the deck that they build is going to be rubbish for the next weeks with of gaming.
It's the perfect casual (because edh is too complicated for genuine casual play) multiplayer product and I wish they were coming out in time for our next magic playing trip.
If you're complaining about lands in the packs and questioning the value of what's inside Vs the cost of the packet, then you are not the target audience for this product. I'll happily pay extra per booster if it means, with people who don't know the card pool as well as I do, that we can just open the packs and play a fun fair game. Hell I wish that Wizards made one of these for every standard set rather than collector boosters.
I love that Wizards is trying to make products to cater to a wider audience, my friends and I are going to have a blast with these.

The wider audience is casual players who can't grok commander and don't about price/quality?
Wow, i wonder why they don't make these kind of products more offer.
One of the main selling points of this will be commander cards. They will put inside things like a unicorn tribal legeds, a lord for dogs (hounds) and a dragon who says "dragons you control get +2/+0 and haste" and commander players will buy that.

I'm guessing 499 reprints of bulk draft chaff with one chase rare/mythic. (Oh and 37 commander cards to milk those players)
There are hundreds of cards that need reprinted across several formats and this won't even make a scratch. They should call it Bulkstart. A new player can start loading up on unplayable bulk outside the first game they mash these together.
Playing since 1994: Currently MAGS (HomeBrew),Standard & Pauper (Pioneer and Modern are degenerate trash formats)

I respectfully disagree. We, as players, should ensure WotC toes the line on the 15+/- card metric. One land out of 15, sure, I can see that. But a pricier twenty card pack with 13 non-lands? Then WotC needs to decently sweeten the pot. The "unique" art land, IMHO is not a fair tradeoff. It needs to have a higher EV with really good cards or decent foils or what have you.
Obviously, I'm not asking for a set with fetchlands or crazy expensive cards. What I'm saying is if we're going down to 13 cards then cut some of the jank out at least.
It's still a little too early to get into arguments though. Let's see the card list and see if it's worth it.

You know what, this could be a cool FNM format instead of draft. Imagine...everyone gets two jumpstart packs, compiles a deck with them, and smashes face over the usual round structure of a sanctioned FNM event.
I think that'd be cool to try out at least. What say you?

I'm always a little bit mystified when I hear people complain about what cards won't be reprinted in an upcoming set.
Not because they're wrong, mind you. It's true that most of what players want reprinted probably won't be reprinted.
Rather, I want to know what people expect from this product:
1. Limiting packs to one or two colors means that we won't see Atraxa, Riku, Progenitus, or similar cards.
2. Having packs based on themes makes it HIGHLY unlikely that we'd get full cycles of cards (so no 5 swords of X and Y, for example).
3. The focus on themes will probably make more generalized rares very unlikely. Probably no vampiric tutors/imperial seals or fetchlands and very few rare lands of any type (We'd be looking at rare lands like Flamekin Village or Westvale Abbey, I'd expect).
4. It's highly unlikely that this set will reprint too many cards in the Mystery Booster as it's coming out just a couple months later. That tanks the odds of seeing (as examples): Selvala, Purphoros, Athreos, Elesh Norn, Rhys, Sakashima, Mana Crypt, Mother of Runes, Weathered Wayfarer, All is Dust, Ancient Ziggurat, Arbor Elf, Ash Barrens, Ashnod's Altar, Aura Shards, Baleful Strix, Bloodbraid Elf, Shardless Agent, Caged Sun, Caustic Caterpillar, Chaos Warp, Darksteel Mutation, Cure of Opulence, Crop Rotation, Crystal Shard, Courser of Kruphix, Defense of the Heart, Fatal Push, Gift of Estates, Gravecrawler, Helm of Awakening, Manamorphose, Mishra's Bauble, Nature's Lore, Nature's Claim, Path to Exile, Phyrexian Reclamation, Priest of Titania, Lotus Petal, Carpet of Flowers, Phyrexian Metamorph, Recruiter of the Guard, Rhystic Study, Soothsaying, Swords to Plowshares, Counterspell, memory lapse, mana leak, arcane denial, Dark Ritual, Lightning Bolt, Brainstorm, Preordain, Arch of Orazca, Teferi's Protection, Demonic tutor, Sol Ring, Phyrexian Arena, Farseek, Sakura Tribe Elder, inquisition of kozilek, hymn to tourach, aura of silence, Solemn Simulacrum, Soul Warden...
Keeping in mind all of these restrictions... what could wizards possibly print to make this a worthwhile reprint set for you? Can you list a few non-rares that would work here (oubliette... three visits... merchant scroll... that's as far as I can get)? Can you list enough rares that wouldn't be mythic to make this set worthwhile (other than the "one money card")?
I'm not saying that people aren't right to complain. I'm saying that "Wizards is going to cheap out on this set" and "Giving this set a critical density of cards I still need would be a logistical nightmare" are totally different complaints. Even if the first is probably going to be true to some extent(I don't imagine average price value being much higher to validate increased price), I get the impression that some people are really complaining about the second point.
I love that Wizards is trying to make products to cater to a wider audience, my friends and I are going to have a blast with these.

Jesus christ you miserable pill do you just want no one to ever play this game?
I just want fair pricings. shocking, i know
