Everyone whinging about fetches not being in a standard legal set better buckle up, because that ain't changing any time soon. WotC explicitly DOES NOT want fetches + shocks in Pioneer, meaning any reprints are going to be in supplemental sets.
As far as the Secret Lair itself is concerned, I'll finally accept THIS as proof they care about the secondary market. Prior examples people were holding up COULD have been attributed to the printed rarity of the cards, despite what many people here seemed to believe. This is 5 rares, so that's officially dead. That being said, I don't consider opting to NOT cause the secondary market to collapse in on itself to be a bad thing. They're prioritizing maintaining customers over replacing them.
The secondary market should not be prioritized over making the game—that's primarily for entertainment—actually affordable for the average player. If secondary card sellers lose out because cards drop majorly in price, that's not any worse than players losing money because they have to spend an unreasonable amount of money on their cards just so they can keep up with the meta and enjoy playing the game. In fact, it's better that way. And it would help more encourage more people to buy into the game and therefore give so returns to both the secondary market and to WotC.
Besides, WotC's primary motivation here is definitely not the secondary market. It's their own profit. Because of course it is. They're practically printing money here.
Not printing the shocks in standard for balance reasons is perfectly fair and good. These Secret Lair products having such high price tags just because people are willing to pay that much for them is not so much, especially this one.
The immediate and overwhelmingly negative reaction to this announcement has me thinking (perhaps naively?) that WotC is going to realize how bad this looks and either modify their current plans or figure out another way to get fetches into circulation. I don't think I have seen a single WotC announcement get a more negative instant reaction than this one has.
The only way to stop them from this is to STOP BUYING THIS PRODUCT AT THIS PRICE POINT!
Players need to show fiscal discipline and refrain from spending on these. Then it will stop. Problem is 95% of the Magic Market has the backbone of an elderly Jellyfish and will talk about not buying then go right out and buy it.

Has there been an immediate and Overwhelmingly negative reaction to this announcement? I've seen a minor negative reaction that barely registers. From what I've seen the message to wizards has been "the people unhappy about you making money are still unhappy while the people happy to spend money are still happy, keep on trucking." As long as the people that wizard's actually looks at are happy with these products no amount of already unhappy people continuing to be unhappy will make them change course.
One of the selling points they originally gave us for The Secret Lairs boxes was they were going to showcase artists with styles that were outside the box for normal releases. Well, outside Seeing Visions and Kaleidoscope Killers, the rest are very much in line with what you’ll see in a Standard released set.

The biggest problem here is that these are a limited print product. Ten per LGS at most, which means a very limited supply. You’re never going to get everyone to forgo buying this awful product. I’ll bet a lot of people here denouncing this product will buy it.

I think you both (conveniently) missed my point. For a handful of aggressively negative forum posters, WotC is being represented as the ultimate manifestation of corporate greed. Of course the rest of us can continue to play the game without investing in overly pricey SL drops - and I've already voiced my own criticism in this particular thread - but any amount of playing will result in the continued promulgation of the Magic brand, intentionally or otherwise, and whether you like it or not. To say "too expensive, this product isn't for me" is one thing; to wax hyperbolic in every thread about how awful Wizards is, and then not act on their own principles, well, that's the very definition of hypocrisy.
I still have friends that won't touch a Blizzard product after the whole Blitzchung controversy. That's how you take the moral high ground.

That indeed is exactly what I was saying. It doesn't have to be everyone either, just enough of a majority that does not and they will be forced to change practices.

I say what I mean and I practice what I preach. I haven't bought a single Secret Lair drop yet and probably won't unless its something I want/need and the price point is advantageous. Fiscal discipline is tough for most. If you want it buy it, BUT if WotC is shoving your face in it, call them out AND cut them off by not buying it.
I plan on buying a couple of Challenger Decks because I need the cards and the value is there for me. I've let it be known in those threads. I've been playing and will keep playing long after my critics are done and gone. Again, thank you for the kind defense.

Even with a limited product, if a significant majority doesn't buy it can force them to change those practices. Again that is asking a lot when players will badmouth a product then turn around and buy it. Some people just don't have that discipline, always has been always will.
Also for the record I will be picking up a copy of Spellbook Chandra if I can get it for around 20 bucks. I think it offers decent value for what you get. Wouldn't call it a home run but its a solid double.

Well said. I am lucky enough that my collection is fairly substantial and worth what I think is a decent amount. If it were to lose 50 to 75 percent of its value while at the same time bringing in more players and lowering the cost of entry and competitiveness it would be well worth it. I like the collectibility of the game, but I like the competition aspect far greater. Pay to play is an obstacle in this game for sure.

Wizards decided they wanted to make more money. I'm still waiting for the end of the reserve list. Depends how much money they want to make. Either way this doesn't matter. Magic as a whole is going to tank for the next month at least due to the virus. Likely 3 months as everyone avoids social contact. Even if other sporting events re-open people will be hesitant to attend them. It's going to sell. You will just have to wear a mask to go outside and play. haha. It's getting nuts out there.
Dude pretty much almost every business on the planet will tank from the virus for a little bit
And trust me maro would rid of the reserve list in a heart beat if he could it’s hasbros and people who bought the cards 1k fault it banned from being turn off for good

I'm just going by what I've seen from twitter, every magic related comment board, and every player I have spoken with. Yeah, I'd say the response has been overwhelmingly negative.
The print run is so small and the distribution so limited that it basically ensures this will "sell out" so that wotc can consider it a success by that metric, but this appears to be generating only negative coverage online (except for the professor's initial video, and saffron olive seems to be defending them too which makes me think he is going to be announcing a "secret lair" soon)
My concern is that this does not appear sustainable.
Granted this is still a very mild version of Konami with Yugioh’s practices of high product turnover. And that’s still a successful franchise, somehow.
But to be at the point of comparing MTG to Yugioh is an ominous sign. Especially since I quit that game. Not that I have any intention of leaving MTG, least of all over a secret lair drop I have little interest in obtaining. But I do believe the outrage is largely warranted here.
While I know the goal of profit, I do find it perplexing why WOtC insists on keeping these lands so exclusive. To continue exploiting their secondary market value no doubt.
Well the secret lair does seem a little excessive, but there is always the ons fetches. I thought artwork is just oki. Though i do feel selling only through LGS is rather unfriendly 0.0. Now it will be price hiked like crazy.oh well.
But i dun think it precludes wotc from reprinting them in some other form. For instance mystery booster 2.0.
Standard? We can hope i guess, but they could also sell them in commander someday.
Anyways pioneer precludes fetches ... so the future looks kinda fetchless.
One of thinking why would they avoid printing shocks in standard
They pretty much pioneer legal
But we really want shock reprints because those are the best options for non basics with the basic types just give us something like that tango/bicycle dual lands then we’re in business

There should not be non-basics with basic types. Either that or searchers/fetchers/count-ers should only count/fetch basics of their types.
Then fetches would a) not be so expensive they warp the game and b) be standard printable. I guess a new cycle with new names would work...

The best option they can do is make a fetchland akin to Fabled Passage that searches for basic land types rather than just nonbasics with basic land types assigned like the Shocks. So think of the Panoramas but with the choice of one of two basic land types.
That couldn't hurt much could it?

The ultimate idea is to make a "wish" land cycle, so instead of searching and shuffling, you grab a basic from your sideboard.
Could do them even allowing to wish-fetch for dual lands, as you have to actually put the land you want in your sideboard.
