Aww man. The RB one doesn't work with Rakdos, Lord of Riots. I'm starting to think none of the companions are going to be worth warping my build for them.
I think I've learned to treat Magic cards like baseball cards: keep 'em in a binder in numerical order, don't play with 'em, try to finish the set and just keep my head down.
BFFs with Kaervek the Merciless? Not sure how difficult it is to build around this odd restriction, but even in the 99, seems worth it.
Overall cool card, thankfully it's 5CMC 'cuz if it was 3, it would def make some huge waves on Aggro builds.
EDIT: Also Vial Smasher, tho that one seems a bit more difficult to work with
Oooh I like it with Bonecrusher Giant becomes really good! (Not the 2-mana shock side, alas)
These companion clauses all seem not worth it to fully build around, but as long as you have a decent amount of odd mana cost creatures or burn spells in your deck, you may want him as a finisher. Maybe with Torbran as your only even mana spell?
It's more than a little frustrating that, aside from the one that's already banned, these companions are severely underpowered relative to the severity of their deckbuilding restrictions. Hopefully at least one of the unspoiled ones will be playable, otherwise the entire mechanic will have been wasted. Such potential...
Ok, this is awesome! IIRC, this the creature from in the trailer that Vivian fought.
So, what are the rules for companion in commander?? Now, I know how it works if you're going to select the card as a companion but can you use it as just a regular card in the 99? I've got an idea for this guy but I need to know the specifics first.

if your 99 is made in the way the companion card wants your deck built correctly you basicly get 101 cards in your deck
thats why the otter got a emergency ban since its condition is pretty much 100% of all edh decks (all cards with different names)

Exactly this. They're not bad cards per se, just not worth building around for the most part. The reward for changing deckbuilds in fairly substantial ways is there, your mileage may vary on whether the juice is worth the squeeze, though. I maintain that the concept is great, the mechanic feels like tossing out a pokeball and summoning your best bud, who happens to be a terrifying monster. I just don't know if the execution is great, though.
Obosh, for example, is fine. There is nothing wrong with a functional 6/5 for five that doubles the damage you deal with some of your spells and permanents. You need to build around it at least somewhat to get good value from it, but the question becomes: is it worth sacrificing important two and four drops to cast it from wherever? I don't think that it is. None of the companions thus far are bad cards on their own, the companion stipulations just aren't hoops I'm going to jump through to play these creatures that way. I'm starting to just treat them as though the whole Companion line doesn't exist.

i feel like your'e significantly under estimating this thing's potential.
that's off the top of my head real quick. this thing makes things deadly quickly. i mean hell, repercussion + earthquake for 2 and you're probably killing the table or getting damn close. little things become big things FAST, even the slew of 3 drop goblins start packing a massive punch

question is this the thing vivien fought in the trailer?
Don't think so, that thing was more crab/spider-like.
Also, I think there's a comic-style art showing Vivien standing in front of the thing from the trailer, which implies that is likely the showcase art of a mutate creature.

I was looking at making a Seismic Assault variant with this. Unlike swans which requires 39+ lands this version would require far less since lethal would be 5 lands.

Elspeth and Jhoira rock my world.
Also, in EDH Goblin Sharpshooter becomes a lot more abusable dealing 2 damage a pop.
Well, as a spanish speaker Infernal is just a bad translation for Hellion, which does contain the word "hell" in it.

I disagree. This works really well with both lyzolda and judith in commander. This also makes bolt hit for 6. Thats more than significant.

but putting in 99 will be worth it if you built quite a bit of odd cmc stuff

Fair enough, but I was thinking along the lines of this.
Even in Standard, Fervent Champion x 2 = 8 damage. You can play those and Knight of the Ebon Legion, plus you can still play Light Up the Stage, Skewer the Critics, and even Drill Bit. Cauldron Familiar, Witch's Oven, and Mayhem Devil are also still on the table. Mayhem Devil seems particularly nasty with this card in play, turning Fabled Passage into a Ramunap Ruins.
