mutate copies the card doesn't it or is that wrong
that's wrong. it'd be broken as hell if it copied and added the new abilities.
i don't know how to explain it better than the card already does.
when you cast the creature for its mutate cost you can either put it on top or under another nonhuman. whichever creature is on top is the creature it is plus it gains all the abilities of the creature on the bottom. so if the creature on the bottom has trample, the top creature has trample. it doesn't trigger etbs of a creature already on the field, so say if you had acidic slime and mutated this octopus on it, you wouldn't get to pop another artifact/enchantment/land plus have it gain the abilities of the octopus, instead you'd either have an octopus that has deathtouch and draws you a card when it deals damage, or a slime that has deathtouch that nets you a card when you deal damage.... however, if you then copy the pile of cards with say phantasmal image, that phantasmal image is a copy of whats on top, so if the slime is on top you get a phantasmal image that's a slime with deathtouch that draws you a card when it deals damage - and its etb effect would trigger (the phantasmal image's as its an acidic slime entering the battlefield)
I don't understand why this card is hyped. Can't the opponent kill the mutated creature once the mutation resolves and you get two-for-one'd?
Mutate to me just looks like expensive auras, except the opponent kills the creature AFTER the mutation resolves instead of before.
The majority of the "when this creature mutates..." mutations are waaaayy too expensive to be competitive.
The only mutate creature I think MIGHT be playable is Lore Drakkis as it's impossible to be two-for-one'd when it mutates.
(Just to clarify: When a mutated creature dies both the top and bottom card go to graveyard, correct? Its not like Totem Armor when only one of the cards hits the graveyard?)

Its simply a value creature in the "flash" decks (standard that is).
You got so much interaction with it, that you get much more value.
It becomes cheaper with Cunning Nightbonder, can put counters on Brineborn Cutthroat, starts to draw cards early with Spectral Sailor and simply having flash for Slitherwisp.
You can quite literally put all the "flash" cards in a deck and make it work, not necessarily fantastic, but the UG flash deck is around also, now you get to choose and play with black too.
Being a UU 2/2 flash that can draw cards is often totally enough to see play, you dont want to primarely mutate it at all.
Its a fairly cheap deck too (if build on a budget), so you can expect people to play it.
The card outside of all that is not really good.
Older formats have a bunch of humans you want to play, which simply doesnt work with mutate at all.

Ideally, you're already "up" a card by the time the opponent removes this. By flashing it onto a creature that's unblocked, you can generally time it to have dealt damage while the opponent isn't able to remove it, so you'll have already draw a card by the time they do remove it. Obviously there's some degree of risk involved, but Sea Dasher Octopus will rarely get you 2 for 1'd.
