i think it was a necessary decision and its just not feasible to have in store play while any of this pandemic is going on. the safety risks are far too high, especially when dealing with a demographic that often can't figure out how soap works.
i do have to wonder how it will impact card pricing as they continue to pump out products while we have minimal opportunity to purchase those products. i also wonder what, if anything, they'll do to actually help out the smaller local level stores. they're the lifeblood of the game, and if they can't have events they get ****ed pretty quickly. i imagine quite a few are going to go under from this decision, and i really doubt wizards is going to do much of anything about it.
The real tragedy of all this is that in the scenario that ALL Local Game Stores (LGSs) file for bankruptcy due to COVID-19, it wouldn't affect Wizards of the Coast's Paper Magic sales enough to where they hit the brakes and realize that it isn't making them any money anymore. It will just empower the collectors more than the players where non-Reserve List cards become a new pseudo-Reserve List of cards that have been short printed to oblivion in specialty products.

can you clarify what you mean by empowered collectors creating a pseudo-reserve list from short printed cards?
nothing is being short printed at all. this is a move thats canceling all sanctioned events. you can still buy product. if anything it might shift the emphasis to big box stores over time.
i also think you're completely wrong about sales not being impacted. no events means a hell of a lot of no drafting. no events means no competitive playing either. over time, people stop buying packs because they can't exactly use them outside of their kitchen, and that's not a sustainable sales model over time.
^ While some decline in card value is likely,
I know quite a large number of folks in my regular EDH group are still getting together for games,
and Zoom is a real factor, too.
And that’s saying nothing of investor types who would likely react by scooping up half priced Mana Crypts and such.

With everyone being forced to quit Paper Magic due to the loss of Local Game Stores (LGSs) affected by the current pandemic that ends up driving the market value of these cards for collectors who don't play Paper Magic like Rudy from Alpha Investments where they can just buy them out and keep the cards for collection. The problem is that collectors have a Reserve List bias where they won't buy non-Reserve List because they're guaranteed to lose value over time with the likelihood of Wizards of the Coast reprinting these cards unless they decide to expand the Reserve List further to the point where most of the Modern format card pool never gets reprinted ever again. They might have to If collectors are going to be the only target demographic they cater Paper Magic toward since nobody won't have a place to play anymore especially for EDH / Commander.

Yea saw this coming since a few countries started to rise again in the USA but not all
And one more thing
LGS's aren't gonna die, stop claiming this all of them closing theory already dead in the water Several reopened I've heard several people say this on blogatog and Reddit and maybe Facebook (about their areas) they got too reopen and only the ones who are getting a reboot of COVID have to close again beside have some of you remembered That new ones will be born after the situation and can still buy from the stores with limited opened aka with no contact buys just like with other places
And of coarse there's a few places that does commander that isn’t a LGS

Okay but like... using the cards, competing every week, that drives prices up as demand increases. Im still not clear on your point. How is reserve list preference any different than normal, and how does that apply to reprintable cards? I feel like youre making a bit of a sky is falling argument thats just really fuzzy and not all that applicable here
This doesn't really affect anything magic wise. Since we've opened back up at reduced hours (from 12-10 down to 2-8) and only seating about 1/3 - 1/2 the normal number of people, we still make the same average daily sales as we did pre-virus. The few times we did hold larger events, barely anyone showed up, but it didn't affect the bottom line. Everyone is still buying cards and other products even if they're only playing casually. The only thing that is truly suffering is D&D night. We used to have 60+ people show up every Tuesday night for that, but now we have angry parents telling us we're disappointing their kids by not letting them come and play.

As a parent, I have to wonder about the bolded part of your statement.
1) WTF? Parents are angry because your near-free childcare service is interrupted for the kid's safety??
2) unless I'm misinterpreting the "their" and " them" because the kids are disappointed because the parents aren't hanging around your store allowing the kids to be at home in peace? That I can understand.
LOL. There are plenty of adults upset that they can't play, but in this instance it's the kid who wants to play. Funny thing is, we allow people to come in and play whenever they want. We just aren't holding the scheduled event. If these people would have bothered to get their DM's contact info to setup a game outside of the event, there wouldn't be an issue (unless of course the DM didn't wasn't interested).

Is your store following health guidelines? Getting people gathered in an indoor space for playing an extended amount of time is risky. Cabin fever is really annoying, but getting hospitalized or sick is not fun either.
However, my local LGS is opened for reduced hours and selling product, so I still drop in for a 10 minutes to buy some product. They aren't holding any events right now (not to mention they have poor ventilation).

If true, how entitled of them.

This eventually will crash the Paper market. Even "collectible" cards won't be the hot items anymore once everyone is playing digitally
Digital Magic is not at an acceptable level to replace paper yet, imo.
Arena is the most developed option,
and it has a mere *fraction* of the total available card pool.
It’s fine for Standard or Brawl (lol),
but the EDH crowd isn’t going to be satisfied with how Arena is currently.
Of course they could eventually get all of the paper cards into Arena,
but they haven’t seemed terribly interested in that so far.

I could actually see them trying that now that paper is going to be harder to pull off this year. Sadly though Wizards/Hasbros track record when it comes to digital anything is hardly anything good
I live in The Netherlands. Our local game store shut down early in March, and actually used the downtime to remodel considerably. They've since reopened, and even had a tentative M21 prerelease, although that was limited to eight players max, no two-headed giant events. Right now to observe social distancing they only have four tables set up, with two chairs each. No multiplayer games, no Warhammer, no D&D. Also, no trading of cards. And that's in a country with a steady decline in cases, with hospitalizations in the single digits most days.
Digital Magic is not at an acceptable level to replace paper yet, imo.
Nor will it ever be for most players I know. People keep bringing up digital replacing paper, but it's never going to happen. Not only does paper make far more money for WOTC, but lots of players want the social aspect that you just can't replicate playing alone on a computer. The day MTG goes all digital is the day tons of players quit buying and just play with their old cards. And frankly, there are a lot more interesting things to spend time and money on in the digital realm, so even some people who currently play digital might migrate away when they can no longer play both paper and digital.

That's not happening
This claim has been around since MTGO and paper still kicking eons more than digital
And plus I told you guys before (not that it matters) several game stores are already reopened (the ones that are safe enough to reopoen) and people
